I get the gist of it, put your name in bold, put some stuff about yourself on the resume like your education, your work experience,the main reason why you want this job etc, etc, basically just write about yourself professionally and you'll get the job. Thank you Rachel Ballinger, your bright, bubbly personality and knowledge of resumes really made the video great. Keep up the good work!

    Hey girl! I'm a Career Counselor and I love watching your vids, along with the rest of your fam's! This video is great! In the most respectful way possible, can I give you some more updated info since you're educating hundreds of thousands of people? :-))
    First, objectives are somewhat outdated. This is because, like you said, you want your resume to ideally be only 1 page (it takes employers 6-10 secs to decide whether they're going to continue reading). You want to utilize that 1 page the best ya can and the objective of turning in a resume is kind of obvious so it's somewhat of a waste of space. Instead, the more current section to include in that place would be a profile summary. This could be something like "Highly energetic recent university student with an outstanding background in sales and customer service. Strong written and verbal communicator who works well both independently and in a team setting."
    Second, you want to list your Education section first before your Work Ex

    • @cherishgehret7283
      @cherishgehret7283 8 років тому +11

      Experience if you're a rent grad. Once you have some professional work history under your belt (3-5 years) then you can move the Work section above the Education section.
      If you are going to include a skills section, it is best to include that between profile summary and education. So, ideally, the sections would be in this order: (1) PROFILE SUMMARY (2) SKILLS 3) EDUCATION (4) EXPERIENCE (5) VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE (this is optional).
      Under the jobs you list within the EXPERIENCE section, it is not necessary to list supervisor's names, addresses, or phone numbers. You just want to include your position title, company name, dates worked, city and state (optional) and then a few bullet points of what you do/did at that job. Bullet points are your friend in resume writing because they are aesthetically pleasing. :-) ....

    • @cherishgehret7283
      @cherishgehret7283 8 років тому +10

      +Cherish Gehret Also, never list references on the resume or "references available upon request." This is also an outdated practice. If references are required, you will want to create a separate page for them.
      Last but certainly not least, the more eyes that look over your resume, the better! :-) You want to put your best face forward when applying for a job and this is one instance where perfection goes a long way! It needs to look nice as well as use proper grammar and spelling.
      A few additional basic tips: only black font (no pretty colors unfortunately) and print on neutral colored (grey, white, beige, etc.) resume paper.
      I could go on and on with more tips to make your resume stand out above the rest but I'll leave it at these huge comments I have left! Haha.
      Rachel, no disrespect meant! Just wanted to help out a little since this is what I do 40+ hours a week! Haha. And if you or anybody in your family ever needs a resume review, I'm happy to help pro bono!!!! :-))

    Awesome tutorial. I've been trying to help my brother build a resume (hes much younger than me) and it seems overwhelming at first but its gets MUCH easier with time. To start you're struggling to fill a page with valuable information and after a few years you will find yourself leaving tons of stuff off of your resume just so it all fits. My tip is to NEVER discard your resume. You will start fresh and build numerous variations of your resume but never delete a copy. Always keep what youve made as you can go back to it and pull from it in the future. I typically make a unique resume and cover letter for each and every job I apply to which is a very quick and painless task now that I have SO many resume variations to draw from (over 20). The reason behind having different variations is to emphasize a certain set of skills or qualifications for a specific career so that you seem like a better organizational fit. In a job that involves office duties I may use a very organized chronological resume template with an emphasis on education. With a labor job I may focus more on work experience and specific projects or skills that ive acquired. With a government or public service job I often focus on customer service, volunteering and my connection with the community. The content of all of these resumes will be the same but i'll organize it differently and allocate the bulk of total page words to one or two specific areas. To start just build a general resume so that you can pound the pavement and put a lot of copies out, but make sure to keep all the early renditions of what you do for the future.

    Another good thing to add (especially for people with little work experience) is a volunteer section if you volunteer at an animal shelter or with a youth group or something else this shows your motivated helpful and kind and you have good work ethic bcuz you're working but not getting much out of it

    That voicemail message tip is very accurate. If someone had an inappropriate voice message I took them off the list of potential hires at my old internship. Those suckers pissed me off lol
