The Extinction Happening Inside You

Our modern lifestyle and diet are leading to the extinction of parts of our microbiome, but we can use what we've learned from dealing with nearly-extinct macrobiota, like bald eagles, to understand the consequences and find solutions.
Thanks also to our Patreon patrons / minuteearth and our UA-cam members.

Extinction: the termination of a kind of organism or group of kinds, usually a species
Endangered: a species that is very likely to become extinct in the near future
Microbiome: a community of microorganisms (such as bacteria, fungi, and protists) that inhabit a particular environment and especially the collection of microorganisms living in or on the human body
Hunter-gatherer: a member of a culture in which food is obtained by hunting, fishing, and foraging rather than by agriculture or animal husbandry
Prevotella: a genus of bacteria most commonly found in the microbiome of people who eat a plant-rich diet
DDT: an aromatic organochlorine sometimes used as insecticide banned in the U.S. that tends to accumulate and persist in ecosystems and has toxic effects on many vertebrates
C. diff: (short for Clostridium difficile) a toxin-producing bacterium which can infect the bowel, causing illness with diarrhea and fever, especially in people who have been treated with antibiotics
Antibiotics: an antibacterial substance (such as penicillin, cephalosporin, and ciprofloxacin) that is used to treat or prevent infections by killing or inhibiting the growth of bacteria in or on the body
Probiotics: a microorganism that when consumed (as in a food or a dietary supplement) maintains or restores beneficial bacteria to the digestive tract

Corn, Wheat and rice are breed from grasses... some wild ones are still expressing seeds on the scale of what would have been available preneolithicly.
Condors are getting led poisoning from what they eat, 🦅 used to.
@@fionafiona1146 Yeah you can digest the seeds and in some cases like Bamboo people eat young shoots but mature grass stalks and blades contain abrasive silica skeletons which are not only indigestible being literally the same stuff as quartz or commercial glass and thus will eat through your teeth.... In some sense a blade of grass is really part glass.

I’ve grown up in a family that strongly supports organic eating, no fast food and as little medication and more proper diet as possible so this video doesn’t surprise me but I hope many more watch it because it’s very important how you eat. You are what you eat and we’ve been eating crap in this new age.
Usually, there is a bunch of guys claiming to be first. Somehow, here everyone wants to be third.
Ender Wiggin fanbois.
Would you make a video on what dietary needs these microbioms have so we can probably maintain them in ourselves?
We really need customizable probiotics with tens or hundred of strains that are multiply beneficial (especially those that affect mental health, fitness, anti-inflamation and anti-aging/longevity) and are capable of colonizing the gut (and skin for topical probiotics, as well as the ear, nose, throat, and mouth for oral and respiratory probiotics). They should also include a selection of multiple different prebiotics, postbiotics, and specific helpful nutrients. We should also consider probiotics for homes and building, because the home microbiome can affect our health and the long-term condition of our homes. Maybe we can get probiotics for pets too, so they can live longer.
Its crazy how we are naturally good at fucking things up for everything we come in contact with
WOW, I just spent the morning on the toilet having a real bad time... I recently went through antibiotics to fight of a bad case of tonsillitis. It's funny this is the first video on my feed this morning! My doctor had suggested lots of yogurt and probiotics. Prevatella is a bacterium that I wouldn't mind being antibiotic resistant, as long as it doesn't invade where it doesn't belong.
Hello there
Thankyou for making content that is good and not boring
Nothing to see down here,...
Fun fact: DDT is an enemy in Bloons Tower defense six that is also deadly by being hard to destroy and being invisible to most towers.
The antibiotic point at the end is good but we also need to do something about all the antibiotics (a majority amount) fed to cattle
1:35 There is so many of these damn eagles in that state, always trying to eat your pets, when the fish come it's not uncommon to pass 100+ on a ~10 minute drive; I am perpetually impressed and disgusted that the rest of the country managed drive the things to near extinction, but then again this is the the country that drove the most populous bird in the continent to extinction.
Each new generation of people, as they grow, they learn what a "normal" environment is by experience, so they usually fail to notice the long-term destruction that is happening. Each new generation is more environmentally blind and deprived.

I wish these kinds of environmental videos had a useful call to action at the end instead of just a dumb pun. (I love dumb puns, but link us to an organization that is working toward this goal that we can donate to or get involved with! I'm glad the University of Minnesota is doing this work, but we need to mobilize our networks on every level in the fight for a habitable world. And that includes nutritious food!)
Extinction : is happening
MinuteEarth : it's free real estate
The stick figure on the thumbnail didn’t feel so good
The first problem with getting people to stop using antibiotics unnecessarily is that far too many people still think they work for viral diseases like the flu (which they don't),
and so end up either demanding their doctors give them antibiotics they don't need, or buying them themselves.
Another problem is that people tend to keep hold of antibiotics after treatment (related to people not actually finishing their course), then end up using them for infections that
don't warrant their usage, or where they are outright not needed (again).
Th4tGuyII Oxfords should just say No, but it appears many miss-prescribe. Another issue is taking all of a program, even if one feels better earlier..
Personal responsibility doesn't go very far when our economic, political, and legal system are stacked against our health. There's so much money in irresponsible use of drugs, no profits in good health.

veeery well , thanks for the info , as for me in my country , i dont know anybody who uses antibiotics for non-extreme stuff like the flu , we only use pain-killers for the less tame versions of the flu and also drink hot stuff ( like ginger )
Happy to see my habits are saving some lil buddy's from extinction.
That's why i adopted a more paleo like diet.
More leaves, greens, fruit and protein instead of many carbohydrates like sugar, wheat or corn flour and potatoes.

This is a great video!
"accidental poisoning" is not accidental, it's "externalities", part of the corporate business plan.
When you make a video about gut bacteria, but you really just want to talk about eagles.
I am a battlefield, I am destruction
This brings up the problem I always have with the pro-science = pro-GMO camp though. It's great we can produce more crops by making them naturally resillient, but it's like eating foods with preservatives ending up preserving the food when we need it to break down, ie digestion. These foods that naturally produce things that protect them might be also changing our microbiome, and when all your food has the same gene's, why would we assume that our microbiome doesn't lose diversity as well...

Mr. Stark, I don't feel so good...
I think that this is a natural adaptation that will continue to push forward evolution. Sometimes looking at our ancestors in not helpful. The most prominent example of this is the fact that we are surrounded by unnatural light at all hours of the day and there is no real way to avoid it. We must then intervene with sleep supplements like melatonin to optimize health.
_We must then intervene with sleep supplements like melatonin to optimize health._
We must? I've never taken melatonin in my life. Seriously, that surprised me. Are you sure that some supplement-maker isn't just taking advantage of you? People make money pushing all sorts of useless stuff.
Also, none of that will likely affect the evolution of human beings. If you mean the evolution of gut bacteria, then yes, it means that more bacteria will become resistant to antibiotics. And from our point of view, that's _definitely_ not a good thing, huh?
Just say No to this type of drug use. Sometimes one will be sleepless for a while, try exercise and relaxation, etc.. Seems like a poor choice to take drugs for things like sleep. Perhaps a sleep mask would help.
