I've been watching dozens of videos on all the usual suspects (Obsidian, Evernote, Todoist, Notion, etc) and this one helped me the most. I think I am discovering that there is no "one perfect tool", but there are a couple of tools (apps) that if used together, can make life extremely manageable and productive. Thank you for your very clear delivery and excellent content.

Thanks for the explanation of backlinking---most helpful. FYI when I upgraded to the latest version of Evernote (10.33.5) under the "Coming Soon" section they list the following: "Need to link to one note from another? Drag it from the note list into the editor and Evernote will automatically create a link for you" I'm curious to see what this turns out to be, but think it's clear that Evernote is feeling the heat.

I'm an Evernote user still thinking about the inevitable migration. These are the things that make me want to leave Evernote: (1) url links ask for a double check and acceptance extra button (this is nonesense) (Notion hyperlink goes directly); (2) connection between notes...go to one, copy the internal link, go to the other one, copy the link...(Notion solved perfectly); (3) tables to schematize info...these are so tight in layouts that just a few things enter elegantly within each cell, making an schema look like a monster. This is also solved in Notion, allowing you to organize things also horizontally (with tabs, etc); (4) the workarounds you have to make to write in markdown. I have a jekyll blog and Notion would help me a lot as you can writte almost everything thingking in MD.
However, Notion still lacks better web clipper, better phone widgets to capture faster in phone (text, audio notes, images, etc).
    Conclusion...I don't know...
By the way, good content and pardon my english.

Thanks for this video, very informative. I have a problem with the crosslinking advantage of notion that you are highlighting so much. Yes, if i want to link Albert Einstein's note to a note on the Speed of Light, then I just need to use the @ sign. BUT once your system has 2000+ notes, you need to remember in your head that there is an "albert einstein" note that you can link to!!! Surely, in the perfect system you would simply write something like "much work has been done by Albert Einstein" and at that point it would recognised the words Albert Einstein and ask you if you want to cross link it rather than rely on your memory that a such a note exists in the first place. I hope I have explained it well enough. I don't see the point of cross linking if it relies on your brain to know a potential cross link exists. Instead, I want the app to highlight the potential and for me to confirm or refute it. Would anyone care to reply please (including the Paperless Movement)?

Hi Tom, Coda 3.0 vs Notion next? Particular for freelancer looking to have a backbone to organise noting down and linking ideas, keeping track of projects? Trying Coda on desktop but concerned about the seeming lack of iOS app development. Notion seems to better in this regard

    • @paperlessmovement
      @paperlessmovement  2 роки тому

Thanks for the suggestion! Certainly something I should do a video about 👍 Again, both are very different platforms. Coda is a lot more complex to set up and handled. But you can build very unique cross connected databases with Coda. Notion is a lot easier to use and as better 2-Way cross connections. Coda also has no Backlinks, if this is something you are looking for.

Well ... IMO, without offline support an app is not suitable as a note-taking app. So Notion falls out! All other apps (Craft, Evernote, UpNotes, etc.) work offline as well.

Thanks for sharing and for providing the comparison. Although I agree with your statements about the ease of use for avoiding double work and therefore adding back links into the notes, I cannot help thinking that this is only covering part of the equation.
I am a long time Evernote user and have worked with notion for my own company, the thing that keeps pulling me to Evernote is the ease to ingest data which can be easily found plus the fact that I need LESS structure. With notion I can just generate a page but (as nerdy as I am) when there is a database it needs to fit in it as I do not want loosely pages flying around. Every time i quickly add information into the system, with notion, I need to think in which database I need to place it and which field I want to fill. With Evernote I still need to organize it but the urge and level of effort is way less.
In your example when I perform research the linking connection (which notion uses backlinks for) is to generate either internal links but mostly by using tags. Duplicate information can also be input only once in a note but using tags I am still able to retrieve what I am looking for. (Not to mention the search you have referred to as well).
So in short, I get and support your points but I believe it’s more about how someone likes to work with a tool and DOES the tool serves its purpose vs the level of effort is needed to ingest or retrieve the needed information. Both tools (and the other ones) have their ups and downs. There is no perfect one.
Thanks again for sharing what you do and believe. Great stuff and till next time

It should have notes segregation features like folder in folder and sync across my android phone and my windows laptop so that I can do both casual and serious writing and editing , and one last thing, it would be wonderful if it has a OLED dark mode as it looks cool and is also good on the eyes while doing night time writing in dark rooms .

I am using my note taking app for 3 reasons :
    - Personal (recipes, thoughts about my life, activity plans to do with kids, etc.)
    - Professional : Day to day Work (meeting notes, etc.)
    - Professional : Long term (references, book summary, key points of a methodology, etc.)
I used Evernote a lot but I realise I haven't been using it for 2 years now that I have my ipad pro & use Goodnotes.
But I am losing a lot from my "memory" on Evernote.
Why do none of Evernote & Co. handle Handwriting as good as Goodnotes or Notability?
Why are those very good handwriting note apps still so poor in knowledge management & organising?
Have you guys found a missing link between the 2?

I'm a long time user of Evernote. I tried a lot of other note taking apps but I always come back to Evernote, mainly because of their web clipper, OCR recognition, e-mail sending to the EN account (in premium version), ...
You don't change easily when you have more than 7.000 notes.
Since 2 months I use Notion; it looks prettier but I find it more difficult to use. I only use it for showing notes to friends (photos...)
The main problem with Notion (for me) is that you have to export a note into a PDF file before you can print it. And there is no possibility to change the layout they propose.
So, I will remain an Evernote user until...

IMO Tom, “what’s the best note taking app” is a valid question. It might be the case that the best note taking app will not fit the use case of the person raising the question, but that would be out of subject since the question wasn’t “what’s the best note taking app for my use case”.
The best note taking app would be the one that :
    - Min bugs
    - Max performance
    - Max import/export compatibility
    - Max features or max all around features
    - Max integrating options
    - Most beautiful / productive UI
    - Max productivity apparel ( shortcuts, addons )
Those criterions should also be weighted appropriately; obviously an app the wins every other app but is having the most bugs could not be the best app.
So what’s that app ? Back in 2007 EN was the clear winner, but who is the winner now ?
IMO, if you did a table evaluating all note taking apps exclusively on the topics above, Craft would be the winner. For example, for my use case EN was and is a better fit. On top of that I had been using EN since 2008.
Abysmal performance and countless bugs since v10, made me switch to Craft, despite that I was already using the app that is the best fit for my use case.

For my general every day note taking, I use Nimbus Notes as it has much the same search capabilities as Evernote and the team at Nimbus Notes really have been in overdrive the last couple years. I have two record keeping instances where Notion is much better suited. One is for my client billing (a simple due date database) and the other is for my fitness record keeping. I'm a firm believer in use the right tool for the job and don't try to make one tool do all the work. You can't always fit a square peg into a round hole.

Well I guess we could make a living out of comparing established note taking apps and software; what a stressful way to make a living thought eh?
Of all the professional groups I've come across since the tft (Tool/s for Though) arena was coined, I can say with confidence that your approach has the most clarity of communication's and in-depth content with absolute context as the driver. Thanks for that Tom.
3 areas of laser focus for anyone who intends to adopt and adapt a tft.
    Personal/Academic/Business
For me: I make a distinction between these three areas. I'd love to know what your thoughts are and the possible interoperability between the three arenas.
    Personal for me is confidential.
Academic may be personal too yet is probably for peer recognition and sharing.
Business is and can be damned by NDA's as you may know, yet total privacy and security is essential for Business usage.
Also the relatively new (within the last few years) link/back-link function. This has been lauded over and as much as it has been a huge gain for linking thought processes and processes within system; there may be a potential issue to be resolved.
The backlink can and may become a backdoor into private and secure notes and content. Nothing that can't be solved by the developers though. I just hope this is recognized and dealt with. I'd love to chat about it sometime Tom. Coming from corporate Tom I know you'll understand the need for privacy and security.

That’s not an easy task to do. The only way I can think of, is exporting them from your handwriting note-taking app as PDF or add a picture or scan of your paper notes. But neither is really useful in my opinion as Notion won’t make those notes searchable. While Evernote does! I haven't found Evernote to be so efficient with search, once you have a couple of thousand notes. I don't have as many as some people but search often fails, for me, even when I know there is a note with the search string! Not sure Evernote is ready for handwriting search!
Am I alone is wasting so much time trying to move information from one app to another? That's probably the biggest frustration for me and applies to many of today's apps: they don't want you to leave!

    • @paperlessmovement
      @paperlessmovement  2 роки тому +1

Hi Lee! I never experienced the issues you describe and I have thousands of notes too. Moving to another app works when you decided which to pick ans how to use it. You could keep Evernote running and just migrate what you are actually looking up in Evernote instead of just moving everything. Because when you didn’t look it up for a long time, you probably don’t use those notes anymore. This being said, it only works if you are very clear about the WHY behind moving tools and a strategy how to use the new app in order to make it better than using the previous app. ICOR was developed for exactly such reasons. Building awareness of the WHY and HOW. 🙌

    1. Bessere Kalender Integration
    2. OCR oder zumindest der Umgang mit durchsuchbaren PDFs
    3. Mehr Funktionen in den mobilen Apps.
Evernote wäre für mich eher eine art DMS, ich. glaube so nutzt du es ja auch.
