Great reaction. 'Megitsune' is a big favourite, often coming top in fan polls and it is the song they have played live more times than any other. It is also arguably the song that showcases better than most what BABYMETAL are about and one that truly reflects their Japanese culture the best starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen or koto, you decide which) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains all the fox masks in the video) which, in Japanese mythology, are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive .
It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional female role in Japanese society I think - or maybe it is - whilst also praising and celebrating the women who have played that role over the years for their strength.
They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings ("crying at heart, smiling at face") are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong.
The melody used in the breakdown with the pig squeals in the middle of the song (they also use it as the intro when they play it live) is from the very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms).
When Su pulled out the tanto (short blade) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss.
Much of the video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has become a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo. The guys at the back waving the traditional instruments about were dancers with the lady who did the fan dance's troupe.
Feel free to do another reaction to a live version if you want to, nobody will complain. Su's live vocals (she uses this song for sound checks etc as it is a hard song to get right) coupled with the Kami Band's instrumentals and then with the energy of a good live audience just make the whole thing more special.
I would recommend live at the Red Fox Festival with an all female audience (the Babymetal Reactor Resource has that I believe).

Fun fact, when this song came out Su was very young, and her voice hadn’t changed yet.. now that she’s older, she said that Megitsune is one of the hardest songs for her to sing today.
Also, Megitsune was the first song I’ve heard from Babymetal. I listened to it blind. I was completely unaware of the age of the girls, or the fact that there was even dancing involved- meaning that I was attracted to Babymetal based off of their music alone. And I love that natural connection with music.
Megitsune live from Legend 1997 show was the first live footage I saw from them, so I recommend that to you, if you want to see it in a live performance
Looking forward to more reactions, this is great stuff!
I feel like I’m experiencing their discography for the first time again, it’s really fun. Hopefully you enjoy the rest of the songs, there are some diamonds in there!

    _Sore!_ 🦊🤘🔥
Glad to see you're back with this suggestion, it seems you're binging a lot with BM songs, anyway you can enjoy the song with the live sound of the Kami Band at Budokan 2014 or Budokan 2021 with the new formation.
Fans were enjoying and having so much fun seeing this live every night at Sabaton's Europe Tour and later at Asian and Australian Tour, they also got another Europe headline tour in November, along with the Babyklok Tour, you don't wanna miss the chance to see them live and performing this song like they did recently in all these concerts, we always love the shanenigans between the girls in the middle section after the breakdown.
This was released in 2013 when having around 13/14 and 15 yo, so is one of their early hits and is full of japanese elements, like the "shamizen", a japanese traditional instrument, and is a party festival song (matsuri).
"Sore" "seiya" and "soya" are typical shouts among Japanese festival and it works like a "c'mon!" or "let's go" for them.
During the breakdown you can hear another typical japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" and they're doing a traditional Japanese dance.
In summary, song is about female empowerment and if you follow the lyrics you'll see about it, "Megitsune" means female fox (vixen) and they talk about women acting with a smile in their face while crying inside, just to fit in society or what is expected from them, when they're kind to you they're not trying to make falling in love with them, they're just being their own way, and men tend to confuse and think they're cheating or deceiving like the mythological fox.
"Megitsune" used to be a peyorative term in Japanese culture, pretty much just like around the world, but BM is using this as a way to empower women despite the meaning itself.
When SuMetal is pulling out the "tanto" she's saying "maidens shouldn't be underestimated", that refers to a japanese mob film about some boss mafia daughter before attacking someone. During live performance she does something different and looks really cool doing it.
Oh, just in case, the backing band here are hired actors and none of them are actually playing instruments.
Megitsune is a quintessential song and among top tier BM songs by fans, SuMetal said she didn't mastered yet, that's why she used to sound check with this song before live concerts.
The origin of the "fox sign" is kinda long to explained but here's a short summary:
The Fox God (Kitsune Sama) is the Metal God who sent these girls (and Kami Band after to help them with the metal sound) to unify the world and set them free from Jpop slavery. The kitsune sign came out by accident around the time they created the group by the girls when trying to imitate the typical metal horn sign they noticed it was similar when doing fox shadow shape, they implemented this as part of the lore, imagery, theme and live concerts, the lore is huge so take your time and keep digging and riding the Foxhole 🦊🤘
Btw they praised for real and made a ritual to the Fox God for this song to be a hit and successful, and thanks to the Fox God this is one of their major hits and favorite BM fan songs. -NotACult- 👀
This is a song with the arrangements by YuppeMetal, he took inspiration from "Memphis May Fire - The Sinner" for the drum section, another song that i recommend you for your own time if you want.
    See you next time. 🦊🤘🔥

Another great reaction... you are on fire!
Don0t worry, the "this is my new favorite BABYMETAL song" is a common mistake hehe... But "Megitsune" is a huge fan favorite (me included) and their most played live song (277 times).
Often called the quintessential of BABYMETAL, it took up to 36 demos to Takehiro Mamiya best known as Yuyoyuppe (or Yuppemetal), the song's arranger, until Kobametal (their producer) was 100% happy with the final result. It may sound crazy but this is why "Megitsune" is a masterpiece.
And yes, that breakdown is so brutal... specially when you know it's a version of a traditional Japanese folk song (Sakura, Sakura).
Have you watched "Iine!" yet?? 🤣

Great reaction to a great song by a magnificent band. Fun fact, right after the breakdown in the build up to the chorus watch Yui and Moa run up and down the corridor. Poor Moa falls flat on her face - she was ok apart from almost splitting her sides laughing - so they kept it in. 😂

While Akatsuki is my fave as mentioned before, Megitsune is by and large voted by most fans as THE top BABYMETAL song.
It happens to be number 2 for me, but in so many polls over the years, its consistently voted number 1. It is also by a pretty wide margin their most performed song live, and almost all of the antics Moa gets into mentioned in the Guide to BABYMETAL are during the breakdown of this song (which is altered for live performances, instead of "soiya soiya soiya soiya" they address the crowd and city with some little guitar solo antics before coming back in with the sore sore sore part)
With very few exceptions over the last 10 years since this song was released, it has been performed at every single BABYMETAL concert (Gimme Chocolate, their viral hit, is number 2 and debuted live at the same show as Megitsune, yet still has been performed fewer times). Only a few shows did not include it, and usually were 2 day shows where they never repeated the same song from the first nights setlist. If you go to a BABYMETAL show, 99.9 percent chance you will hear this song.
If you wanna know what BABYMETAL as a whole is? This song right here.
Sidenote: You said the word "Syncopation" when talking about the drum set. My recommendation now is for you to listen to that very song, live. Syncopation - BABYMETAL. Its my personal third favorite and well, you really gotta take in some live BABYMETAL now, their official videos only capture half of the spectacle, as you saw with Akatsuki.
Id recommend the 2017 Fox Festival version.

So after thinking back to when you first saw Babymetal "Gimme Chocolate" all those years ago....how wrong were you? LoL!!
You're not alone dude, so many people got the wrong idea from that song...but Babymetal's solid work ethic and dedication to the craft has won over so many through the years!! It no wonder why they are one of the Hottest Tickets on the Heavy Metal scene today!!
Oh! You might also check their touring schedule to see if they are coming to a show near you!
    More Babymetal Always!!

Hey JustDunk, I’ve really enjoyed watching your BabyMetal reactions because it mirrored my reaction whenI discovered them during the 2020 lockdown and boy, they saved me from going insane. I would say that this and Karate are the only music videos that I really love watching, otherwise live performances are the only way to. I was fortunate enough to recently see them live in Melbourne a few weeks ago and could not believe how much better they are in the flesh. I’ve seen many live shows both domestic and international performers and I rank BabyMetal’s performance at the very top of the tree. It was a short show but I came out beaming and totally satisfied. I encourage you to see them live if you manage to get an opportunity, you won’t regret it. My next goal is to see their arena shows in Japan, that would be life changing. Keep up the great content, it makes me smile.

    Megitsune:-
"Megitsune" (メギツネ, "Vixen") is the second major label single by the Japanese kawaii metal band Babymetal. It was released in Japan on June 19, 2013 as the fifth single from the album Babymetal. It is also the first single released independently from the idol group Sakura Gakuin.
    "Megitsune"
A figure with a kitsune (fox) mask wearing a headpiece and a black robe on a red background, holding two shamisen criss-cross behind it.
The single was first announced for a June release on April 1, 2013. The single was released in four versions: a standard edition and three limited editions. The "Ki", "Tsu", and "Ne" (Kitsune means "fox" in Japanese) limited editions included single artwork focused on Nakamoto, Mizuno, and Kikuchi respectively, and their included DVDs feature footage of two songs from each of the live performances from Live: Legend I, D, Z Apocalypse. Additionally, the single included a chance to contain a ticket to the premium event Kitsune Festival at Meguro Rock May Kan on July 14, 2013.
To promote the release, the band was featured in the June issue of Marquee and on the cover of the July issue of Hedoban, in addition to collaborating with Tower Records for the 34th rendition of the event No Music, No Idol?.
    Babymetal concert chronology:-
•Babymetal Death Match Tour 2013: May Revolution (2013)
    •Babymetal World Tour 2014 (2014).
The Babymetal Death Match Tour 2013: May Revolution (BABYMETAL DEATH MATCH TOUR 2013 -五月革命-, Babymetal Death Match Tour 2013 -Gogatsu Kakumei-) was a promotional concert tour by Babymetal, occurring in conjunction with the promotion of "Megitsune". The band performed four shows, with two on the final tour date, at the same venue. Customers who purchased tickets to the tour could receive an exclusive edition of the single, with a remix by Yuyoyuppe, under the name DJ'Tekina//Something.
According to Mizuno, the tour was designed to be a "training tour". During each of the four shows the three members wore stage costumes for the eras of "Doki Doki ☆ Morning" (which had become nostalgically small for them), "Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!", and "Ijime, Dame, Zettai", respectively, with the final show premiering new costumes for "Megitsune".

Su- was encouraged to sing this song in Japanese Enka style. Her recently changed voice doesn't have that melodramatic wide vibrato common for the style, we do get to hear her sweet narrow and somewhat fast natural vibrato. And i actually appreciate that the producer left in the sound of her inhales where you can hear just how tight her vocal chords still are from the voice change.

Love your reacts, thanks, fun following along as you discover this great band.
There is a particular live version of this song that I think is special enough to suggest you track down and listen, even just for yourself as a fan. BM had a concert with only women / girls allowed to attend, the recording of this (a song which is fundamentally about women empowerment) is so special when all the call-response and audience participation is from female fans. Some of their earliest interviews Su-Metal talks about wanting to make heavy metal that is welcoming to all, and that would inspire young women to want to listen and be part of it. That night (red fox night at the five fox festival) was apparent how much it meant to the band and the audience.
I have not been able to find a video which isnt a compilation from all five of the shows, but there are a couple which only use "Red Fox Festival" audio which is from that night.
Babymetal - MEGITSUNE「メギツネ」(Five Fox Festival ver.) ~~~ make sure the version has "red fox festival live" audio, click the video details and it will list the audio source)

My eyes were probably bulging out of my head and I'm like, "What. Is. THIS?! So good. I didn't want to like them after doing some digging into how they formed but I just can't help it.

Great reaction again! Happy to see you enjoy Babymetal. In a world of copies and imitations, they truly are unique. 🤘🏻🦊🤘🏻 looking forward to more reactions to them. And as you have probably noticed, please feel free to ask any questions you may have about Babymetal. There are no questions too small or any questions that are dumb. You will receive all the answers you seek, and the correct lore. Kitsunes up! 🤘🏻🦊🤘🏻

This is their flaghship, their most performanced song. The one that represent all babymetal is: cute, heavy, foxes, unexpected, foxes, unconventional song structure, contrast, foxes and... foxes!

Megitsune is pretty much the definition of BABYMETAL. It's heavy, it's kawaii, has really good lyrics and it's very Japanese. According to me it's probably their best song together with Syncopation! Nice reaction! Their new stuff is a bit different, a little darker, but still very, very good.

Hmmmmm. I would say its definitely the top 5 songs to understand BM. too heavy on the synths though for it to really define BM. RoR is my favorite, but I would say that doesn't give you a clear picture of them either. I think their later song Arkadia may be closer to a 1 song to define them type feel.
But its hard to really shoehorn them into any one song. My intro to someone would be:
RoR to show how epic their show can be
Megitsune to show the extreme levels of Japan they put into their music
Doki Doki Morning to piss people off and admit they did have a bit of a gimmick nonsense vibe early on
and of course Rondo of Nightmare to wash away the Doki Doki nonsense.
Then finish up with Arkadia to just be happy about loving their vibe.
Oh, and Shine video with the focus on Moa...because everyone must nurture a crush on the princess of love...its just the way.

great reaction, i think she sings on a soundtrack, the Kami Band only joins them on stage and studio recordings, if I'm not talking nonsense. But superb performance of these ladies
Nemophila did a great cover of this song.

Nice reaction. IMO the music video that explains Babymetal. The juxtaposition in everything is amazing. filmed in a real Shinto temple. They said the floor there was very slippery. The clip where Moa slides into Yui is her really sliding into her. While all the clips of Su are very serious and some of them are taken from a Japanese horror movie. The part where she is sitting combing her hair. I always forget the name of the movie. Sorry. The part where Su pulls out the mic knife the line she says is from a movie as well. Madian are not to be underestimated. Apparently, Su still has the mic knife. They did a Babymetal reacts to Babymetal series of videos. They reacted to this song. Su tells Yui and Moa she'll show it to them later. I guess they weren't there when they filmed that part. Video shoots can be a bit crazy. During the squeal breakdown. the melody is from an old Japanese folk song called Cherry blossom. Tying the old with the new. The video starts with Su being untied from her traditional outfit. Setting her free from the past. In many ways Babymetal was about what's cool and new. Yet like in many places in Japan the traditional is still part of everyday life. In the video we see their choreographer doing a traditional fan dance. By knowing your past you have a strong foundation to move to the future. To balance Su's serious parts, we get Yui and Moa literally at play. They gave them a ball and jacks and just filmed them. Knowing this just makes it more understandable how hard it was for them to continue on after Yui left. Especially for Moa. The two of them were a dynamic duo. Yui helped Moa be a better dancer and Moa helped Yui break through her shyness. Everything about Babymetal is a juxtaposition and somehow, they made it work. All those years ago Su wanted chocolate and now she gets perform with her M&M's Moa and Momoko. With Momoko some of those juxtapositions are gone but IMO with the release of the new album they're finding all new ones. Reenergized after their break Babymetal seems to be having a blast on stage and the audiences are joining in maybe more than ever. Check their listings they might be coming to a stage near you. Check out "Yava" with the Kamiband intro next another song that might become you next favorite.

I don't know it's because of song writing or the magic of Su's vocal, when Su came back in the song after a decent breakdown or instrumental solo, the song feel alive again, every times, if you know what I meant.

BABYMETAL has a shade over 60 songs and that list that you are using has, in my opinion, the top third. However, I should also mention that if I were ever to compile a list of most disappointing BABYMETAL songs, it wouldn't be any more than five or so. This is to say that aside from the twenty on that list, you still have 40+ songs to investigate!
    Keep rockin' the BABYMETAL!

Loving your BM journey! So this was very early. The “Band” in the video was fake and the music was performed by session musicians (I’m sure some of whom became real Kami Band members later.
The breakdown tune is actually a very old Japanese traditional song (think folk song).
The girls were super young. I’m thinking 14/13/13 but already showed clear signs of the potential for BABYMETAL. They still perform this and it still packs the same punch!
I’d take a look at From Dusk til Dawn live 2021. Different, but oh so EPIC.
    Enjoy 🤟🏻🤟🏻
