A big difference between this ending and AoT is how much groundwork the characters did to support their plan.
With the UFN and their leaders, he created an organisation that basically ruled most of the world, especially if Britania would join it later on.
With the charter of the UFN that none of it's member nations is allowed an own army, be basically disarmed them, to hinder each nation to wage war against another nation. With the black knights as their defence force against not UFN nations, of which now Suzaku is in charge.
He was also in charge of the whole world for two months, so he had time to dismantel a lot of the military, including military material.
Also in this two months he had time to really hammer home, that he is the sole bad guy that is responsible for everything and his minion for most parts don't ever show their faces, so the moment they stop wearing their uniform and masks, nobody will know, that it was them carrying out his orders, so while the people could hate them also, they can't direct that hate at them since they don't know who they are. And since Lelouch was a tyran ruling over all nations equaly bad, the people can't really blame another nation.
In AoT it was more a short lived fear of being wiped out, that united the world against Eran, which allowed them to put aside their hatred for a moment to solve the more important problem, but the basic hatred never really go redirected to Eren.
And Zero who killed him was already seen as a hero for justice and the people.
I think it's possible to write a really long and detailed essay about, why Lelouchs way could work, while Erens wouldn't ever work. Aside from the fact that it seems our of character for Eren to even create a plan to become a symbol of hatred and to plan for his friends to kill him to create peace.
For me it would have been more believable, if his plan really was to wipe our everything, but the island and then get rid of the titan powers all along and turn the remaining people into simple humans.

Yeah, the groundwork that Lelouch lays is one of my favorite parts of this ending, and it's definitely more believable that world peace was achieved as opposed to AoT. Eren's plan was basically Schneizel's, but with way more casualties, and I didn't think Schneizel's plan was that great.
You say Eren's plan was out of character, but to me, it seemed like a plan he made more for his own peace of mind rather than for the sake of the world. Upon learning the truth, he so strongly wanted to destroy the world, and he knew he was going to try to do it, that he he found a way to frame it so that, after he died, his friends could possibly be seen as heroes. However, I got the sense that when he explained his plan to Armin, they both knew it wasn't going to work. That's where the biggest difference between Eren and Lelouch comes into play; Eren is an impulsive idiot, and Lelouch was smart enough to create a real plan.

One of the moments I didn't really realize until rewatching the series was at 5:45 when Nunally succumbs to the Geass is her voice goes back to sounding like it did in season 1, very high pitched and young. Implying that she is forcing herself to sound deeper and more hard when she comes back to fight lelouch. Both siblings were lying to each other in their own way during the final confrontation.

  • @seandun7083

Paper cranes generally symbolize wishes. Earlier we have Shirley folding a bunch for the wish of the student council getting together again but since she only folded a few, only a few of them show up (then she realizes she doesn't remember that Nunally taught her to make them and we are sad)
I like that they kept whether or not he is alive ambiguous. If he was, then presumably he took CC's code earlier so that he could get stabbed and be fine. Of course the images his sister saw could just have been her figuring it all out, but it could also have been something similar to the shock images that CC showed Suzaku earlier.
The reason I like this one working more than AOT would be due to how much work he put in to ensure that it did work. He helped build the UFN, he radically altered Brittanian society, he asked Schneizle to serve Zero rather than himself. In making the world hate him, he also generally made sure to take courses of action that would be easily reversed after he died. In contrast to Schneizle he asked Brittanian soldiers to "be my slave" which would stop working when he died, he took political prisoners then made sure to die before he could execute them. Due to his Geass it's a lot more believable to me that he managed to avoid leaving behind many extremists like the Jaegerists who believed in the front he was putting on. He doesn't have to actually go through with AOT's 7th OP to accomplish his plan. This was also less "it was his plan from the very beginning" and more "the only way to fix his many mistakes".
30:30 in episode one he says "The only people who should kill are those who are prepared to be killed".
Can't remember if you caught it but at the end we did have Jeremiah, "Orange Boy", working at an orange farm.
One of the reasons I think Lelouch is so popular is because he's both pragmatic and optimistic, which I think are qualities that you don't see together very often.
While the individual mech battles are fine, one part I've always loved is the arms race throughout the show. Starting with your average Sutherland and ending with the Sky Fortress Damocles has always been great.
I haven't seen the spinoff movies. To me the show is pretty much perfect as is and really doesn't need to be expanded upon.
Code ment is okay, though the soup store bit is definitely the best part of it. UBW abridged is very, very good (I assume you have seen at least UBW, HF and FZ?)
Glad you enjoyed the ending. This is definitely one of my top 3 of all time.

    • @on_the_bright_side
      @on_the_bright_side  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks for the detailed comment!
Paper cranes being wishes makes sense. I know there's the custom in Japan of folding 1000 paper cranes to wish for someone's recovery, plus, as said many times, a Geass is a form of wish too.
Also, I never even considered that Lelouch could've taken C.C.'s code. That was her goal for a long time, but she decided to be with Lelouch instead and act as his shield. I could see her willingly giving him her code, but I just don't know if Lelouch would've accepted.
I didn't make the connection between "Orange working" at an orange farm. That's pretty funny.
I may have cut it out of my discussion, but I also love the advancing technologies. It's something I haven't seen in a lot of anime, but it made the battles really compelling and full of surprises.
I can definitely see why it's so many people's favorite ending. I think the best part to me is that, like you said, in taking over the world, Lelouch unites it and sets the stage for peace in a believable way.

Lelouch only came up with the plan to die as a villain after he had stopped Emperor Charles. At that point, he had no more desire to live because he still thought Nunnaly was dead. He and Suzaku realized that the fleijas' existence would lead to an arms race in which everyone who could would build the same city-destroying weapons, and that Schneizel's response to this threat would be to bomb civilization into the stone age to stop that, so they needed a plan that would both stop Schneizel and stop the problem Schneizel was trying to solve by killing a billion people.
Given the fact that the Damocles could simply bomb the world from orbit and then nothing could stop it, Lelouch made himself into a villain so that he would be an irresistible target to Schneizel and ensure that Schneizel would challenge him directly first instead of just going straight into orbit. Once that was done, he would have to be deposed himself given his actions.
What makes his sacrifice heroic is that he doesn't change his plans at all once he learns Nunnaly is alive and his reason to keep living is restored. For the first time, he doesn't treat Nunnaly like she's more important than any other innocent person.
Schneizel is truly Lelouch's ace in the hole after the Zero Requiem. Since Schneizel is Geassed to forever serve Zero, his intellect is forever at Suzaku's disposal, which will be instrumental in keeping of the charade of being the original Zero. Schneizel can come up with plans that rival Lelouch's, so Suzaku will be able to pretend to be as smart as the original Zero.
The questions that will never be answered are what Lelouch would have done if he had not have to bait Schneizel into fighting him and what he would have done if he had not wanted to die after he thought Nunnaly was vaporized. Would he have simply ruled as a good king or would he have decided to live in obscurity? We'll never know.

In terms of the movies, I'd say the recap movies are worth watching purely so that you don't get confused by the final movie that takes place later in the timeline. They are 95% the same, but what changes they do make can be jarring if you go into the final movie without knowing about them. The final movie is worth reacting to, since it's a new story with these characters in this universe.

Ultimately you don’t need to watch the recap movies as there’s only one change you need to know going in to the resurrection movie which we can tell you ahead of time. Other than that you can basically pretend it’s a continuation of the show timeline since the other changes from the movies aren’t relevant. The new Roze show is a sequel to that movie about a new cast of characters but has direct references to the movie’s events.
Personally I’d also love you to watch the Akito the exiled OVAs which are set in between season 1 and 2 of the show and expand on the EU which we didn’t get much of in the show proper
Edit: there is also at least one minor reference to the Akito series in both the movie and the new Roze show

Confession; even though I was an english major, Hamlet is one of the only Shakespeare plays I haven't read/seen. However, knowing the general premise and plot points of that play, I can definitely see the comparisons. I wonder what Shakespeare would have thought about Code Geass? lol
As for my favorite ending; Mosaic. Easily. I'd say I liked that ending more than some of the openings, and I hummed it so often in my life when I was watching those episodes.

I like how you turned around for the intro, just like how Lelouch turned back in his chair to face off Schinzel lol
As for the recap movies + Ressurection, I think you can give them a try in your own time, I'm not particularly that fond of the movies recap because it pretty much assassinated Shirley's character and plot relevance, but since you seem to like the idea of Lelouch being alive, you could have a look at the AU timeline movies.
The new show that's airing also follows this timeline. The R1 R2 anime series has ended and production team said they wanted to leave it intact, so they created the AU movies 10 years later (R2 ended in 2007) in 2017 to continue the CG franchise. The latest episode is not that interesting. It's even less tactics and strategy and mostly mech fights, but I do follow it anyway just for fun. I haven't watched Akito before so I don't have an opinion on it
By the way, you can try a funny spin off called "Nunally in Wonderland", it's on YT and it's super funny

Oh yeeeahhh! Congrats on finishing Code Geass! And huuuuge thanks for answering the questions! I really enjoyed all of the Q&A =3
The nickname was autogenerated so I basically dont care about the pronunciation, but to leave no questions answered - it's supposed to be Maria Mi, but I liked your first guess Mari Ami too =))
18:36 how many times I looked through that very moment with that very question xDD
On Lelouch's fate going on, I am a fan of the theory that he's the carriage driver and he survived because his defiance of Charles was counted as taking his Code (activation of which, as we've seen with both Charles and C.C., takes dying). I feel like the way we were shown Nunnaly's understanding of Zero Requiem (as if it were visions at touch) and C.C. last tearful prayer over the "price" of Lelouch's plan (she knows a toll that immortality takes on one's soul) are great evidence pieces. But, lives Lelouch or dies in that ending, I feel it doesn't matter for the anime itself. Just something great to think about.
I have watched some of Akito (didn't like it) and I've been struggling with Lelouch of the Resurrection for ages until I realized it's based on the alternative way of events. Nowadays, I just choose to ignore the existence of all additional media on the fandom. R1 and R2 are enough haha
Favorite reaction from you - ohhh that's a question. I tried just now rewatching some of the episodes trying to pinpoint some favorite moments, but to tell you the truth, all of your reactions are superb. You have great style, a mix of emotional and analytical reaction, and I love how attentively you watch the series, picking on a ton of details and understanding subtle context. So just - bravo on everything; I rarely stick around for reaction channels after watching Arcane and CG reactions (lol) but I am am sticking with yours.

I am also partial to the idea theory that Lelouch survived somehow just because I feel like he deserves to live in the peaceful world he brought about, but I agree that it's more just a "choose your ending" rather than something that needs to be answered.

    My advice:
React to the picture dramas (you can do it in one video), there's a lot of fun and interesting stuff in it, then watch the recap movies (not worth reacting) and then react to the 4th movie (definitely worth it if you like C.C and Lelouch).
Akito is.. meh.. lot's of CGI mech fights but the story is really not that great.
and then you can react to the new show and see how much you can fuck something up even when you have gold in your hands.
    --
also if you are a real fan, you should listen to the audio commentary with the cast and production team.. it's very funny and interesting.
