Speaking of this game, it's interesting "world destruction" is more developed in the spin-off games of Nintendo's more kid-friendly series (Mario and Pokemon) than in, like, Zelda or Metroid. Sure, Zelda mentions it alot, but never have we seen what the actual "ended universe" looked like (except for Majora's Mask, but that's more of a game over). Super Paper Mario and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky both had that, and in both cases, it's disturbing emptyness. Similarly, constantly-present impending doom is present in both Super Paper Mario and PokePark 2 Wonders Beyond. So at the end of the day, it is Nintendo's most "kid-friendly" series that gets the darkest stuff in their spin-offs (well, without overanalysis of their main games at least. Let's not get into Pokedex descriptions and the fate of the enemies Mario defeats and the like). And let's not forget how one game (SPM) literally kills its protagonist characters and sends them to hell (or heaven in Peach's case), while the other one (PokePark 2) erases their entire memory of the events (meanwhile Mystery Dungeon is "no one will believe this crazy tale". Whether this is better or worse, I'll leave that up to debate). Sound department in the three games definitely doesn't help either (River Twygz Bed of World of Nothingness, all pre-DarkVortex Wish Park tracks, Planet's Paralysis).
I would say that this game and Partners in Time are the 2 darkest Mario games. Both are pretty strong though, so not sure. Partners in Time shows toads with the life slowly being sucked out of them, along with many toads that were kidnapped (and have no idea what happened to them...), and this game shows a whole world being destroyed, practically wiped from existence along with its inhabitance!
Super Paper Mario would be even more awesome if it was in the style of the first 2 games, that’d be kind of tricky with the 2D 3D thing I guess but one of my favorite parts of this game is the colored chomp battle RPG parody which says a lot
I really love how they just try really hard, in a good way, to imitate the representation of literal hell for gaming characters. In Greek Mythology, a person (or in this mythology’s case, a soul) usually had to cross a river called River Styx where it connected the world of the living and the dead. To even make it more dreadful, you know those hands in the River Twygz (aka Styx)? It’s literally the fifth circle of hell aka the mouth of the dead. The wrathful pull people into into the styx where they DROWNED. And of course, Jaydes is obviously the knockoff of Hades. So imagine Mario literally talking to Hades and diving into Styx, trying to not drown (even though he never does) to find his Brother - in an E rated game nonetheless!
What creeps me out most in the destroyed Sammer Kingdom are the "phone beeps" in the music track. And the visuals.......Is this what the insides of a black hole look like? **brrrrrr**
