  • A young officer just out of West Point begins his first tour of duty in Vietnam only to find his men worn down and cynical about the war. His men don't respect him until he gets wounded and returns to be a wiser soldier and a better commander. It is loosely based on James R. McDonough's memoir of the same name. It is the only movie directed by Aaron Norris not to star his brother Chuck Norris.
Lieutenant Jeff Knight meets cynicism when taking command of sergeant Michael McNamara's tour veterans platoon in a Vietnamese trench camp. Unlike his predecessor, who hid till the end of his tour, Jeff takes charge, experiences the manual doesn't allow coping with all realities and gets wounded. He returns, now fully respect by men and superiors. Besides the Vietcong, the platoon wrestles with the inscrutable villagers, which the GIs officially protect, but also fear as some collaborate with them, other covertly with the Cong, either way subject to bloody reprisals.
Surprisingly the film was shot in South Africa and released on October 1, 1988 - For education, entertainment, enlightenment and inspiration. We hope you enjoy and even learn something. Never forget!

My Dad serverd in Nam and for years did not talk about it! He ended up getting a job with no benefits! Was not old enough yet to get medicare so i filled out his VA benefits! He was really hard set against it but once , he was in the system and realized the Nam vets are more respected these days he proudly wears his marine cap and the sticker on his truck !

Great movie. I was commissioned in ‘89. I had three platoon sergeants. They were all grizzled bad asses. My last platoon daddy was a Vietnam era SF veteran. He was a graduate of Nebraska. He was an all-American safety for coach Devaney and won a national championship. Fricking stud. Ronald Harper. RIP amigo. I learned real warrior leadership from you.

I enlisted in 1978, by 1983 most Vietnam Vets were retired by US Army. They were damaged goods, probably for the best, all the drug dealing and money extortion in the barracks in West Germany were controlled by Vietnam Era NCO’S I saw it and lived it, by 1983 it was a new army, only real good ones were allowed to stay and reenlist . There were murders and race clashes and rampant crime in the barracks, I’ve seen shit go down and soldiers convicted and sent to Leavenworth .

I'm glad I finally took the time to view this film. It is as good as any number of other movies dealing with the combat theme of the Vietnam war. I felt the ending was superb and the proper message to leave with the audience, whether they have ever served or are just your average civilian. So many of the films released over the years on Vietnam focused on guilt, failure and the broken spirit of morale, with only a future filled with depressing forebodings. Platoon Leader's closing scene reveals that the show must go on, that the unity of command between Officers and Men can and will endure. They loyally served their country and asked not what it need do for them; right till the final calls of duty were completed.

I have to come in agreement. Best Vietnam movie out there for realism , even Platoon, in my opinion. I was there . Didn't see many things like this but I know it happened from talking to my many 11 bravo friends at the Vietnam Veterans outreach program back in the early '80s.

I grew up during the Vietnam War, saw the numbers every night on the news when I got home from school. My father and I always argued about the war. He said it was necessary and I said it was a slaughter of our boys. Then they were treated like criminals when they came home. Friends that came home were changed for ever and not for the better 😢. So many were embarrassed that they were and are still. I will always shake the hand of all our vets for their service to our country! Very good movie of the men who were forced into a war we should of never gotten into

This is a good example of a B-rated movie doing a lot of things better than big-budget Hollywood productions. The opening scene, the balance between action and humanity, the way they showed how many shots miss in a firefight without turning into Stormtrooper Aim... it's gooood.

We didn't salute in Vietnam. Good way to get shot by a sniper, so no saluting. Medevac helicopters were unarmed but the medics were allowed to carry a pistol but no M-60's. The guards protected the compounds but not the villages. That was the job of ARVN soldiers and militias. The tree lines is where most snipers hid when the helicopters landed but they quickly retreated and hid after shooting some of the American soldiers. They did not stand and fight. Most of the attacks came in the dark hours.

Knowing my luck in 1972, I didn't bother waiting to see if my number would be called by the draft. I joined the Marine Corps so I could choose my MOS (job). But, halfway through basic our senior drill instructor told us he had some bad news. He told us that they had started pulling the Marines out of 'Nam and that none of us would be going there! I had mixed feelings about that news, because I already psyched myself up knowing I was going. But, at the same time the news was a great relief too. But, after talking to many Marines who were there, I was damn glad I didn't have to go!

Obviously the lack of respect given to some of the junior officers in the Vietnam war stemmed from the fact that they were completely green and could try to think they were going to carry on as they had in training, but not so, far too many of them died because they thought they knew better than the senior non commissioned officers, the backbone of any unit and has been proven time and time again that junior officers have to be babysat by the SNCOs, until they can stop crawling and stand up and walk, so why did the United States military send them straight to the front lines?, surely they should have been sent to units with an abundance of experience so they could gain a little more understanding of the situation before being sent to the front where they still knew cak all but at least new how NOT to get everyone killed.

i spent a year 68-69 in vietnam on lz jamie. you can google and find info. our LZ was the 2nd and 7th Cav Delta Company and 2nd 19th Arty B Battery totalling about 185 soldiers when fully staffed...which was never. When i left there was not even one soldier that was there when i first arrived, i.e., 100% turnover. this movie is a fairly realistic look...some parts were for the movie but other parts did not rise to the level we dealt with. All in all, it's as realistic of a movie about life on a forward firebase in vietnam as I have seen.
