  • There's an organic weed killer that many people don't know about- CORN GLUTEN Meal! Learn how to use corn gluten meal to kill weeds before weeds emerge, grow, and take over your garden! Best of all, corn gluten meal is pet safe and child-safe and can be used in the vegetable garden as well as lawns.
    Corn gluten is effective as organic weed prevention when it attacks a weed just BEFORE germination or sprouting.
    When you see the Forsythia plant blooming in spring, it's almost too late!
    Foodie Gardener, Shirley Bovshow demonstrates step by step how to prepare your garden soil and apply the corn gluten meal. You will learn how to apply corn meal gluten and understand how and why it works.
    What is corn gluten meal?
    Corn gluten meal is a powdery byproduct of the corn milling process. Originally used as a supplement in hog feed, corn gluten has become a common organic alternative to synthetic chemical herbicides.
    How Corn Gluten Meal Works?
    Corn gluten does not prevent weed seeds from germinating, but it does inhibit those seeds from forming roots after germination. This is great news because a weed can not live without roots!
    This means that applications must be very carefully timed. Foodie Gardener, Shirley Bovshow shows you how to apply corn gluten in the garden.
    Does Corn Meal Gluten Stop Weed Growth?
    Corn gluten meal is a natural substitute for a synthetic “pre-emergence” herbicide and has been advertised as a more environmentally friendly way to control weeds! Start killing weeds in your vegetable garden or lawn garden with corn gluten meal before it's too late!

    Grazon is frequently used on fields, where corn is grown. So the corn maybe organic, but the field that grew the corn may not.

    Is the Corn GMO because I do NOT want anything GMO in my garden.

      I'm pretty sure it's the natural corn husks, heated to make this stuff. Like corn & vegetable oil... now THAT stuff will kill you!

      HI Lydia thanks for watching and commenting. You make a good point for those gardening strictly growing certified organic. However, I'm aware of organic, non-GMO sources of corm gluten meal for pre-emergent use such as EarthEasy. May be a little more expensive.

    I live in Washington state near seattle. What do you do if you dont get two weeks without rain on the spring!?

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for watching. Great question!
      If you're facing a rainy spring in Washington state near Seattle and don't have a two-week window without rain, you can try a few strategies to make the most of the situation:
      Choose the Right Time: Apply corn gluten meal as early in the spring as possible, ideally when the soil temperature reaches around 55-60°F. This is when many weed seeds start to germinate.
      Optimize Application: Apply corn gluten meal when rain is not expected for at least 48 hours. While two weeks is ideal, applying it when a shorter dry period is forecasted can still provide some effectiveness.
      Reapply if Necessary: If the initial application is washed away or if rain persists, consider reapplying corn gluten meal when a dry period is forecasted.
      Consider Alternatives: In areas with unpredictable weather, it might be worth considering alternative weed control methods, such as mulching, hand weeding, or using other organic herbicides.

    Shirley, what can I use to kill daylilies? My knees won't let me dig them up and no one I ask wants them. They are taking over some of my other plants. Thanks.

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Fannie! Daylilies can be highly invasive and are very difficult to get rid of. Is there any chance you can hire somebody to help dig them out? You will have to make sure every little piece of the rhizome is removed because new daylily plants can grow from a tiny piece.
      For another solution, you can mow down all of the leaves and then cover with plastic for up to a year and smother it.
      Of course a chemical will kill it but I take it you’re not going in that direction. I will not blame you

      Hi Fannie: easiest way to deal with dandelions is a great tool by yard butler it's called the rocket weeder it's always best to use after you've had some heavy rain so your soil is loose get a bucket like you'd get it Home Depot one of those five gallon buckets and you don't have to kneel down you just push this tool into The dandelion put in at an angle pull it up and there's a plunger to eject the weed into the bucket. No messy hands either LOL I'll send you a link to the UA-cam video These are sold at Ace Hardware stores Home Depot and also on Amazon. I have it it works great My yard has basically no dandelions. Crab grass likes to grow in areas where the soil is compact. Twice a year Aerating the area and adding a thin 1/4" - 1/2" layer of compost will help improve the soil and in time make the lawn less suitable for crabgrass.

    I have cloves in my grass what can I use to get rid of them.

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  Рік тому

      Hand-pulling: One option is to pull the clover plants by hand. This can be time-consuming, but it's a good solution if you only have a small amount of clover.
      Mowing: Clover grows taller than most grasses, so keeping your grass mowed short can help prevent the clover from growing and spreading.
      Applying herbicides: You can use herbicides to kill clover, but make sure you choose a product that is safe for your specific type of grass. Some herbicides can damage or kill certain types of grass.
      Improving soil conditions: Clover often grows in lawns that have poor soil conditions, so improving the soil by adding nutrients or organic matter can help prevent clover from growing.
      It's important to note that clover can actually be beneficial for lawns in some ways, such as adding nitrogen to the soil and providing food for pollinators. However, if you really want to get rid of it, the above methods can help.

    • @danielreed8536

      Clover is a natural nitrogen fixer. If your lawn has clover growing in it, it typically is an indicator that your soil is low in Nitrogen.

    So odd, all the corn gluten products I have ever seen say that it's not pet/child friendly and to water in after spreading.

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  2 роки тому +1

      Maybe these products are not pure corn gluten? You can buy organic.
