  • This was shot by an old co-workers father in (I believe) 1965. It's from 8 mm film and has no sound but the video is pretty cool. If you raced sports cars in Northern Ca. in the 60's, you might be or know these guys. I like the 356 that broke down and they stuck a hay bale to protect it while guys are getting the rear out, in the preceding corner.....

This is quite an old You Tube entry. I just recently noticed it and as a former SCCA turn worker and racer it brought back a lot of memories. The SCCA San Francisco Region's races back then were a lot easier to promote and organize. I was at that video'ed event at Candlestick as well as a one time race at Oakland airport and the Port of Stockton. I was 18 yrs. old. My father, a local auto repair business owner had just purchased the first of Shelby's AC Cobras in the SF Bay Area. The Cobra teams were just getting noticed. Candlestick and Oakland saw Cobras driven by Ed Leslie, Dave MacDonald, Ken Miles, Phil Hill...
The Candlestick races were, indeed, run though the new parking lot and exiting through a fence onto the perimeter road that ran along the bay.
The Oakland Airport race was conducted on the new runways that had yet to be opened for commercial airline traffic.
The Stockton races were run on the docks and surrounding property of the Port of Stockton.
VacaValley Raceway and the Cotati course were also being used for SCCA regional and national events.

I was at the races in 1964 sitting atop the double decker press bus parked at the start - finish line. Just had a really bad feeling about racing at Candlestick and the following year bore me out with 2 fatalities.

I currently own a red austin healey 3000 that was in this race (its now blue). I can't seem to pinpoint it in this video, but it may be out there.

I am the blonde kid in the film at about 141, I remember the day clearly, how hot it was and how unusual that the SCCA races were at Candlestick and not at Laguna Seca where we usually went. My best friend was the dark haired kid, I though maybe his father made the film?

Your best friend was Cory? I worked with him for many years and he gave me this video. And, yes, his dad took the video. Small world.

I remember this as a challanging course. I'm driving the Stanguellini shown at 1:23. At one point there was an opening in a cyclone fence we drove through; part parking lot, part road course. And there was a fatality.(RIP Bart) But these were the best days of California racing!! Cotati, Vacaville Stockton, Tracy, Laguna!!!

Robin, ditto on everything you said about this "course". Your Stanguellini was a beautiful race car. I might have been driving my silver Porsche Speedster (#39) or a white BMC formula Jr. (also #39). I miss those great races we had.

I know this is a long shot, but do you remember a red austin healey 3000 driven by Bob Darby? I think you may have been in a different class though. Just trying to track down some pictures/history.

I was the Contest Board Chairman for that event, it was the only race ever held at Candlestick Park. There was a fatality on Saturday when O'Neill hit a guardrail and was killed instantly. And in the final big bore modified on Sunday the three main contenders were Jim Hall in his Chaparral, Dave Ridenour in a Genie and Bart Martin in his Chevy powered Brabham BT8. Hall was the odds on favorite but they'd agreed before the race to make a race out of it and give the crowd a show. On the first lap Bart's lower rear "A" arm pulled a rod end apart and the fail put him into a pole and a fiery crash which ended his life.

Thanks for asking Kary. Sure, it was a former co-workers video and he gave me to do as I please. Good Luck on the school assignment.

Can’t believe I found this video! I was there with Denise McCluggage’s sister and her nephews. We were actually talking to Phil Hill at the pit fence when Bart Martin was killed. Phil saw the huge black smoke cloud and just took off! 2 years later I saw him react exactly the same way in the movie “Grand Prix” when the “Clark” character crashed. So that sad memory at Candlestick gave Phil a convincing reaction for the movie.
