My $500 house in Detroit -- and the neighbors who helped me rebuild it | Drew Philp

  • In 2009, journalist and screenwriter Drew Philp bought a ruined house in Detroit for $500. In the years that followed, as he gutted the interior and removed the heaps of garbage crowding the rooms, he didn't just learn how to repair a house -- he learned how to build a community. In a tribute to the city he loves, Philp tells us about "radical neighborliness" and makes the case that we have "the power to create the world anew together and to do it ourselves when our governments refuse."

      No More BS Please Yes, I do. Detroit has achieved budget surpluses 3 years in a row, is no longer subject to the emergency manager, and unemployment is under 6%. Major corporations are investing huge sums in moving into Detroit. Still a long way to go but there is no denying the positive developments of the last several years.

    I can agree with most of his message and love the idea of a more integrated Detroit. However, white guilt is oozing out of Drew here. The city was over 80% white when it was at peak population, now it is over 80% black. I would argue that some white people coming back to the city is not a bad thing, and the downtown and midtown neighborhoods are much more diverse than they have been in recent history.

    this started out as a nice personal story about how this guy coined a new term for a strong community. . . then the last third was a lot of govt blaming for why his personal journey isn't the main narrative of a very complex city with a troubled history. Wish i could have seen his house completed, how the community grew with him being the new addition. or something... not about how Chicago is struggling in the face of gentrification.

    I got annoyed when he started to get sappy about the water shutoffs. The global reaction to it was that it was a horrific act. But residents in the metro area were less than sympathetic to it. Because people that were paying their water bill, were paying higher rates to compensate for the people not paying. The people not paying, will pay $200 for a pair of shoes. But skip the water bill. Then the city water department finally put their foot down. They sent the shutoff notices. But instead of the delinquent customers getting on a payment plan to catch up, they just screamed foul, and racism. And when I say delinquent, its not a month or two. There were people that hadn't paid their water bill for multiple months, some even years! But that part was left out of the global spotlight.

  • @AndyM1928
    @AndyM1928 6 років тому +11

    Don't be ridiculous. Clean water, delivered in well maintained pipes isn't free and we should stop pretending it is. Radical neighborliness would mean setting up your own cisterns, wells/rainwater collection and treatment system. You even said it yourself, you don't need to beg the government for help (except cleaning your water apparently).

    • @miomatteo
      @miomatteo 6 років тому +6

      it is not begging if you pay taxes.

    • @AndyM1928
      @AndyM1928 6 років тому +1

      Matteo Mio simply paying taxes doesn't mean they're managed well or that they buy everything politicians tell you they do. Politicians are expert liars and have every incentive to put problems off until the next election cycle. Most modern cities are built in such a way that the property tax base is too spread out for their infrastructure. Where he pays taxes or not doesn't change much about Detroit's ability to provide services.
      Also, I'm betting taxes on a $500 house are too low to cover the maintenance of his section of street, curb, plumbing and wiring. Not to mention fire and police.
