Tony probably underestimated Gaethje, he didn't prepare specifically for him while he could, but Gaethje and his team studied everything about Tony. JG simply fought smarter and Tony didn't expect it (especially bc the main difference between Justin and any other of Tony opponent is that he didn't chase Tony when he was at his most dangerous: when he was rocked). Gaethje's coach is the real deal, and Tony didn't expect it.
#UFC 249 I felt heartbroken for Tony during the main event. It felt he was fighting a wrestler not a striker. I feel the loos has to do a lot with his preparation for UFC 249 as he was preparing to fight against Khabib who was a wrestler / Grappler not a world class striker like Justin Gaethje. I remember the way he fought Rafael dos anjos in UFC Fight Night 98 who is also a extremely good striker. Tony just outclassed him in striking. He was moving good and fought with combination of 4-5 punches at a time. Today he was throwing 1 or 2 punches and waiting, it felt like he was expecting a take down attempt from his opponent. I’m not taking away the masterful performance of Gaethje. He was sharp, his left hooks were outstanding and his cardio was upto the mark till the time referee Herb Dean stopped the fight in the 5th/final round but I still believe that today we didn’t saw the best version of “El Cucuy” The boogy man.
Tony didn't even go for any take downs. That's the problem here. People are suprised a top tier striker out boxed a well rounded fighter. Tony didn't even try to use half of his tools or anything that would have given him a chance to actually win. He fought himself in this fight and lost everything.
