There are intrigues behind intrigues in this matter. I think it is not about Africa not getting fossil fuel plants, I think it is about trying to ensure it doesn't develop at all. Doing so means more informed population and stronger control of resources. All that is needed to prove the opposite is for some western companies to go to Africa and agree with some countries to build and keep control of nuclear power plants there. Cheap and clean energy for the local populations would be best for all if people are so concerned with emissions. If not then know there are other issues at play.
5:59 - We already have all this renewable technology, but it's too advance for us to do? What kind of logic is that. If you already know how to do renewable, why the heck do you need to start doing coal? Seems to me like some prat that can't do coal mining in another country wants to make another country feel like they need them to do coal. I really don't understand how you can say we know how to do renewable then claim it's too advance. It makes no sense.
Coal/carbon would be cheaper and easier to use to kick start African economies. Renewable energy requires time and money that we don't have. Nevermind the other resources needed.
@@cecilians969 What? It's not expensive to do renewable energy. I think you haven't done enough research on this topic. A hydro damn on a river... searizers, there is lots of ways to do renewable energy for small communities.
@@TheaDragonSpiritI agree and yet not every small community has a river or wind power for sustainable energy. If we plan to power larger communities with renewable energy, it needs to be a reliable source. If the renewable energy source is not reliable, how many plants would have to be installed all over the different communities to achieve that? Again how much money would it take to acheive this? Increasing the use of carbon in the continent to kickstart the economy it would be the best option, one coal powered powerplant can reliably sustain many communities at once. After some time, the countries will have produced enough profits to begin investing in the reduction of their carbon footprint. Thus funding the renewable techonology and also having the funds to maintain it in the long term.
@@cecilians969 It depends on the area. One solar power plant would power a large city, with the right storage system. It's not even that complicated to make a solar power plant and it's better than a coal power plant. If they live closer to the sea then Searizers, or energy produced from waves. If they live in a windy area wind turbines... So what is cost effective depends on the area. You are confused, you seem to think it costs more to build renewable then use coal? Where is all the coal coming from? If you have to mine coal, then you might as well just mine the materials to build renewable energy technology, which long term will need less mining.
Cheerleading for equality in carbon emissions is like fighting for your fair share of abusive drugs. Maintain your lead in conservation, look into renewables, and yes nuclear, molten salt reactors which can be used for desalination with the waste heat after power production.
@Bernardus Greeff there are plenty of people who would jump at the chance to build one on their own dime if only allowed to do so by the local authorities. They would also be likely willing to teach the locals the skills to factory build them for export once the technology was proven and able to be certified for import to other locations. That would be a huge kick in the pants to your economy and likely make you the top leaders in the world. The technology was developed in the 1960s by the father of nuclear energy in the backwoods of Tennessee by high school dropouts guided by a few very smart individuals. If not for corrupted politics the world would likely have it today. Google it thorium molten salt reactor Oakridge Tennessee.
@@DegreesOfThree by metal hydrogen are you talking about fusion? If so I’m not a big fan and thankfully it’s still years away from anything more than an interesting science project. What I’m talking about, was developed in the 60s and abandoned due to political pressure. It’s taken until now for it to be rediscovered and literally saved from the shredder, and shared with the world. Look it up it’s an interesting story. They were designing it to power an airplane of all things. The introduction of ICBMs took it off the front burner and then since it could not be used to build bombs , no waste products and it was located in a political backwater the money was moved to the technology we now use which was being developed in areas served by connected politicians who’s voters needed good paying jobs. That and unfortunately has associated complication of leftover nuclear waste and possible reactor meltdowns. Molten salt thorium uses waste fuel or thorium, one of the world’s most abundant and unused resources and results in little to no waste.
@@tbix1963 Thorium reactors are highly inefficient ancient technology. I'm talking about the safire project which is brand-new and can transmute nuclear waste and burn many kinds of metal without any pollution.
As for why I’m not a huge fan of fusion using hydrogen, the last thing the world needs is people trading our limited supply of water for energy when there are other options that are not needed for sustainable life. Doing so would definitely send us down the road to becoming another Mars with all the oxygen liberated from the hydrogen and turning the world into a giant pile of rust.
How does India, China and Russia fit into this? I think other countries should help Africa devlop by providing them with technology, training and other resources. Also Africa might become the next stage for rivalries between global powers.
"When you give them the message they but shove their fingers in their ears"- Holy Qur'an. The ignorance and willful ignorance of some people boggle my mind.
Sorry but I disagree with her carbon standpoint. All nations need to get off of none renuable fuel/energy. You see how impossibly difficult to get people who are on it to move over to clean, renuable energy? Why can't richer nations simply work together with Africa to skip the pollution and get to green energy? Africa went from the stone age straight to the iron age. They skipped the bronze age, and this was before colonialism. So no outside interference caused this innovation. Don't underestimate human potential. It certainly can be done. You can start with kicking out the racist Chinese who refuse to employ or work with Africans but insists on profiting on the resources in Africa.
Once you increase the standard of living in Kenya that renewable percentage will plummet. Overhauling all of america to renewable without nuclear just is not going to work. Democrats also are not talking about carbon capture. Without removing co2 we cannot possibly meet out goal. Plus, I don't agree with raising everyone to American standards, I think in a lot of ways America should reduce their standard of living along with the rest of the world. Why go to a level that is unstable and the pedal backwards? If Africa is developing, then why not develop in way that avoids those problems in the first place?
@@thomaskwan3251 That's the issue, they want to follow the western model when they have an opportunity to design cities that do not facilitate cars, but rather trains and other public transportation. There are more cars in America than people, that is extremely inefficient. They can develop faster and with less fossil fuels. It's a beautiful opportunity to avoid making the same mistakes as the western countries, India and China. I wasn't saying they shouldn't use fossil fuels at all, just they can skip a step or two and come out better.

The nuclear power plants will be built, right now it's mostly Russian and Chinese investment in older breeder reactor technology? I sincerely hope the West can offer a leadership role in developing modernized safe and affordable nuclear reactor designs. There is a lot of interest in the micro reactor designs, ones that don't produce waste that can be weaponized, and I think this is where it's generally heading, if logic prevails.
Hmm. It sounds ideal to make carbon footprints equal, but what is the population of all of Africa? If they had the same amenities as someone in say New York City, would Africa have an equal footprint? Or would it proportionally produce more carbon and become the new problem?
Sorry to break the news to you, but Jennifer Lawrence, Prince Harry, and Leonardo DeCaprio won’t decarbonize their lives. They’d rather Africans stay poor so they can maintain their life-style.
Africa is poor because they don't work hard to change. Many countries adopted communism during the cold war and rejected healthy competition that brings wealth to the people. China and India is increasing carbon emissions while the US and EU lower theirs.
6:16 - There isn't an additional pot, we need everyone to stop putting emissions in to the atmosphere. We need less emissions. We need technology to remove emissions, not excuses to put more emissions out. You already said you know how to do renewable technology. So I just don't understand the logic at all.
The sun doesn’t always shine, and to match consistent energy needs, complex and expensive battery systems are required that are simply out of reach for all but the wealthier nations. Unless we innovate enough to made energy storage economical for Africans, solar is not a great option.
This is the truth, the 'developed' countries have to face... and we all have to understand that this planet isn't able sustain so many human... especially not if they all want to eat like this (meat)... help africa, go vegan...
Absolutely. Nuclear is the most efficient with the fewest drawbacks if managed properly. On the other hand there should be plenty of renewable sources that can help supplement the energy from nuclear, like geothermal, solar and hydro.
Nobody “needs” to cut their carbon emissions. Warming will be gradual, modest, and masterable, especially if we use fossil fuels to adapt to a slightly warmer climate.
@Homunkulus I don’t think you understand generation 4 reactors. They have very little waste if any. And it can pretty much run on the nuclear waste of other older reactors. I like your name btw 👍
i think the west cnput that extra to help 3rd world build up in a way skipping the mistakes prev made. by bould gas plants, build solar fields and the 1st world could pick up the extra cost compared to the gas plant. one can engage the problem on more than one front.
This TED is stupid on so many levels. All countries should face the climate change with the same effort. India and China are planning to develop themselves into carbon free economies in the 2050-60, African countries can do the same. Especially because they don't have to build anew a set of infrastructures like other countries must do. And yes, climate change isn't a problem created by African people but for sure it isn't a problem that I, young person in Europe, had any control of. Our generation of people born in Europe and other Western developed countries in the last 30 years, can't be charged for the crimes of our fathers. Same way African countries should stop accusing others of their internal corruption and incapacity of organizing societies and not tribes.
While I agree with Rose M. Mutiso in her general statement, I see a lot of problems in her speech. She is inconsistent, rather finger-pointing instead of focusing on solutions, and some of her arguments are based on a questionable premise. On the one hand she points out that Africa is the biggest victim of climate change, on the other hand she demands a bigger share of emissions for Africa. If you will suffer the most, shouldn't you endorse GHG emission reductions on other continents as well as your own? It is correct that developed countries need to drastically reduce their emissions, much more than developing countries. But fighting climate change is a global task and must be pursued by everyone and every nation. There is no sense in building fossil fuel based power plants arguing that western society needs to transform its energy generation first. Last but not least, no one denies Africa its fair share of emissions and no one doubts that there will be an increased energy demand in the future. But she uses this claim for some of her arguments. Also, I'm tired of the racism argument whenever it seems to support the own narrative, since it's a knockout argument. The phrased opinion that "not everyone can or should achieve western standards" is not racist motivated and could affect nations of any "race". Also, it does not exclude that western societies also have to reduce their standards. GHG emissions and economic growth correlated in the past. But there is no necessary correlation in reality. Therefore, I don't see a problem in funding only renewable energy even if that was true. By establishing sustainable electricity generation in the first place African nations solve both, the energy demand and climate change problem. There is no need to make the same mistakes as western societies. On the contrary, they avoid a cost intensive transition period.
Question for you (University of Pennsylvania educated yet somehow African) lady... Why are you allowing all those companies extract all that gas and other minerals from Africa? just use it yourself...
PS.. I'm not going to feel bad that we use more electricity playing video games. Blame your own corrupt governments.. and victim mentality. Not everything is racism. Fkn ridiculous.

Cheap and clean energy for the local populations would be best for all if people are so concerned with emissions. If not then know there are other issues at play.
The energy haves and the energy have nots. Powerful sentence
Yes we may have the access to producing geothermal, energy, but we don't have enough money to use the resource 🤷♀️
So impressed by the Clearty of your speach, yes you are right🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Cheerleading for equality in carbon emissions is like fighting for your fair share of abusive drugs.
Why would we use 65 year old nuclear technology when we have metal hydrogen reactors now that create zero radioactive waste?
If you are looking for away to help the environment and fight climate change you can use ecosia they are a search engine that plants trees
How does India, China and Russia fit into this?
I think other countries should help Africa devlop by providing them with technology, training and other resources.
Also Africa might become the next stage for rivalries between global powers.
America should..

Great video!!
Make it a drone/ car manufacturing site and take it from there with a solar system to power the plant and ejacent neborhoods
sahara desert should get wetter and greener with climate change
Once you increase the standard of living in Kenya that renewable percentage will plummet. Overhauling all of america to renewable without nuclear just is not going to work. Democrats also are not talking about carbon capture. Without removing co2 we cannot possibly meet out goal.
Plus, I don't agree with raising everyone to American standards, I think in a lot of ways America should reduce their standard of living along with the rest of the world. Why go to a level that is unstable and the pedal backwards? If Africa is developing, then why not develop in way that avoids those problems in the first place?
Because its expensive too and they dont have the startup cash for these renewables.
No it's nothing about American dream.
This is gonna be Eco friendly global issues.
Even America will change after the virus
@@thomaskwan3251 That's the issue, they want to follow the western model when they have an opportunity to design cities that do not facilitate cars, but rather trains and other public transportation. There are more cars in America than people, that is extremely inefficient. They can develop faster and with less fossil fuels.
It's a beautiful opportunity to avoid making the same mistakes as the western countries, India and China. I wasn't saying they shouldn't use fossil fuels at all, just they can skip a step or two and come out better.

Hey ted talk, why did you CENSOR geek and gamer podcast. Why false flags ?
Africa peuple have to change the mind. be in control of themselves instead of being an applicant
There no funding agencies provided by wealthier countries to enable climate friendly energy projects ?
They have more sunlight.....
Y don't they use solar energy?
With the kind of development needed, it doesnt make business sense. You cant put up manufacturing plants on solar.
The sun doesn’t always shine, and to match consistent energy needs, complex and expensive battery systems are required that are simply out of reach for all but the wealthier nations. Unless we innovate enough to made energy storage economical for Africans, solar is not a great option.

Is there a grand plan?
First of all this is about business, unless people with power want to do the right things
Go goal, natural gas, and oil. Ultimately Nuclear Power is the solution.
What percentage of electricity needs for Africa would be met with a generation 4 nuclear reactor?
Africa needs solar energy. They have a lot of sun. Maybe you can put your nuclear reactor in your own backyard.
@@vger5857 solar isn't as good as we thought 10 years ago, with the current technology it's not very eco friendly

i think the west cnput that extra to help 3rd world build up in a way skipping the mistakes prev made. by bould gas plants, build solar fields and the 1st world could pick up the extra cost compared to the gas plant. one can engage the problem on more than one front.
China gets a slap on the wrist as usual when it comes to this topic.
Incredibly eloquent, but naive ... If every in development country simply increase carbon emission in short term, Paris Agreement will never be met.
Fkn ridiculous.
...before you say something like that, you should atleast do some research
