  • Kosmas is a mountain village of the Arcadia prefecture in Peloponnese, Greece. It is situated on the southeastern slopes of the Parnonas mountain on an altitude of 1127 meters (3700 feet). It has been officially classified as a traditional settlement.
It is speculated that in the area where you can find Kosmas today, there was the ancient city of Selinous dedicated to Apollo. In 1592 there is the first documented mention of the name Kosmas in a letter from the Metropolitan Bishop of Monemvassia, Gennadios.
Citizens of Kosmas took part at the Greek Revolution of 1821. In 1944 the village was burned by the German ocuppying forces.

We cycled (mainly pushed! and got a lift in back of a pick up) up the stoney track from Leonidian on our cheap secondhand bicycles, past Elonas Monastery high up on the mountain side with its behives, and slept in our bags in the square. There was no hotel. The taverna made us breakfast next morning - six scrambled eggs each. Then we cycled down to the plain again and to Sparta. I believe it's all new roads now. Build it and they will come....and over tourism commercialise spoil it. But as Henry Miller says, you can never spoil the essential Greek character - honest, strong creative and magnificent! Love you still Greece (70 year old man)😅

Well, I was there just for a morning and didn't venture further north. I have some videos on other beautiful villages of Arkadia that are on the other side of the prefecture (like Stemnitsa, Dimitsana, Karitaina, Vytina etc etc). Check my channel for these (if you haven't done already :-) )
