I really hate that Vinnegaard is hurt...it'll just be an excuse when Tadej smokes him at the TDF. Jonas needs to really stock up on his drug supply to even hang with Tadej. What a dominant performance!!!
It's sad with all the trolls in every comment section about the giro. It seems this generation is paying the price of some assholes in the past who've killed the reputation of the sport. I won't blame anyone for not wanting to be burnt twice, but if you cannot believe in good performances i don't see the point in watching. I won't say no'one is cheating. But the idea that pog's doping because he dominates a race without any other top gc contender is just unfair. There's nothing impossible in his performances. The watts he's doing this giro are not extraordinary. Thomas and Martinez struggled to cross 5.5 w-p/kg in the mountains, and pogi did not do a single climb at an unusually high speed. JV on the Loze and Marie Blanque last year was decidedly quicker. All sports have their superstars. In cycling we're lucky to have 5/6 guys at a very high level. Unfortunately, the calendar and injuries means they hardly ever race each other. There's been no suspicion directed towards any of the current lot, and they do seem much more credible than even 10 years ago. Mvdp and WvA, Remco and Pog have been stratospheric talents since youth. They are not random also-rans who suddely become incredible. JV is a freak of nature with his weight and vo2-max being noted since adolescence, and Rog had a long road to develop transitioning from a completely different sport (and while he's consistent and the perfect one week rider, he's arguably never reached the level of the others anyways). Of course, you can never dismiss doping in pro sports. Yet, this is not the 90s. There's no wonder drug everybody's on. In fact, because of the history, cycling has a much more rigorous testing regime than almost any sport except for athletics. So, it's among the least likely sports we're seeing large-scale systematic doping. The teams know the disastrous financial repercussions, and there's not that much money in it anyways. The big team sports are a completely different matter. That's where the money's at, and there the testing is close to non-existent... In cycling, even if some individuals might take something for a marginal gain , the performances we see currently have nothing to do with a systematic issue. The "unnatural" performances are in fact the completely natural development of the sport. Average speeds go up because of substantial aero gains (just look at the jerseys and equipment they were wearing in 2009...) and in-race nutrition meaning riders can go hard all day (they can now take in twice as much carbs per hour as 15 years ago and race in a completely different way). Conditioning better because this generation benefit from training with powermeters from young age, and training science is massively improved. The effects of all these improvements are visible througout the sport, from the top level to the lowest categories everything is substantially faster. The fact that with all these improvements in the sport the top climbers are still not faster than the 75 kg monsters from the 90s tells you how absurdly juiced they all were...
After watching this Giro and the early season I have to conclude that it is once again a two speed peloton. I have been watching pro cycling for over thirty years and whilst he has been drug tested many times something is amiss. These performances are glorious but unnatural. My eyes do not lie.
I have said it before, and I will say it againg. Poga is terrible. He is not doing this to win a stage (he has five already) He is not doing this to win the Giro (That is already done with) He is doing this because he thinks it is fun. How can anybody compete with this,
