When we say "top of the line" for the American heavy cruisers, we absolutely aren't kidding. Des Moines has the best main battery reload and best AA suite of the branch, and the number of different ways you can configure this ship and get good work out of her is the reason she's remained relevant in World of Warships all these years later. This is one ship - really, one entire branch of ships - that definitely hasn't been left behind by power creep. In this video I'll talk about how I build my Des Moines, why I fit her out that way, how I recommend playing her, and follow all of that up with a game demonstrating the ship in action.
Enjoy!

@searaptor the USS Salem is a museum ship currently also a desmoin class. I grew up by Buffalo and believe Little Rock is a Cleveland class cruiser. Also the USS Kidd I believe is there as well but had some hull failure and almost sunk. Have not kept up with news though, to busy enjoying all this heat in Houston lol …
Aha! Sorry for getting it wrong! I was doing it from memory, and my memory is... bad. =D
The destroyer there is USS The Sullivans. Kidd is in Baton Rouge, LA.
I just was in a match with SeaRaptor and I got so giddy that I turned on this vid, I am so glad I didn't embarrass myself.
This is the second ship you've managed to totally transform for me. The first was the Fletcher and now the Des Moines. Your suggested builds have made such a difference. Thanks for the great videos and keep them coming please.
Fantastic series. I'm up to Baltimore now, and loving it. Amazing info. The best on UA-cam for these kind of ship review videos. Great job SeaRaptor. Greatly appreciated. Thank you.
The best full tier list guides around. You really helpt me grind through the line. Thx
Glad I could help!
I'm going to carefully apply this video. I've been getting absolutely WRECKED in Ranked when I play DM. In other videos, I've said my bad performances in DM are the fault of the captain, not the ship.
Also, I found the tutorial on USN AP in the Pensacola video to be VERY helpful.
I'm glad I found this video
I've just purchased the Des Moines and had been looking for a good advice video
very concise appreciate all the work in it
Glad it was helpful!
BTW, I don't think I have seen some one else done this type of LTP series like yours. Keep up on the good work!! I'm also a little curious what LTP line comes next(and secretly hoping it's IJN CAs) 🤩
Glad you are enjoying them! My plan is to do the IJN heavy cruisers next, actually. I will probably go back to a destroyer line at that point (probably Italian, possibly the Japanese main branch).
Thank you again... I am presently grinding the line and this series of video's is very helpful.
I too was late to this line (I bought Salem and was thinking that DM would not add much) and regret it now. Its grind is actually a lot of fun.
Glad it was helpful!
Have enjoyed this series.
Glad to hear it!
How to summarize DM, islands are friends, left click is also friend. use both with radar (when fearful for life or if you feel like activiating your brain and helping). Love the tutorial on my fav ship!
Good example of AA build over hydro (especially DFAA). I almost always stick with hydro on my American cruisers for sub and destroyer hunting, but will trust the AA build a bit more and start giving it a shot. Thanks for the vids and great content!
You're welcome, glad you enjoy it! The opportunity cost of DFAA is pretty high these days given how common subs have become - they feel more common than CVs right now, am I crazy? - but there's still a ton of value in the consumable if you can "force" the enemy CV to come after you.
I went for DFAA on my Hipper as advertised by Searaptor in his Learn To Play video, and I really enjoy the results. It's a little annoying when there's no CVs in the match, but who cares, *there are no CVs* in the match
I think the reason the torpedo protection is so low (besides game balancing) is American cruiser docterine at the time heavily favored long-range gunnery, so if you were close enough to get torpedoed something had gone terribly wrong. (The full capabilities of the type 93 Long Lance were not realized by the allies until after the war; most wartime torpedoes maxed out around 12 km, though their effective range was usually about half that.)
Amazing series please also make for battleship lines
Do you do one off requests as well? I'd love to see a Learn to Play for the San Diego. It's a bit more unique when compared to other Atlanta Classes due to the SAP. Anyways, love the videos, really helped me out with the Mino line :)
You're welcome, glad they helped! I haven't yet tried to do one for a premium ship. It could be done, of course, but there are so damn many it's hard to know where to start. This video might help some, though: ua-cam.com/video/-Qid7R1cXfc/v-deo.html
ya know Raptor this vid taught me a lot about builds. I have only ONE ship in my fleet...the Des Moines. I love this ship. She can get hammered when a BB skewers her with a full gun salvo but I find that doesn't happen on a regular basis. I am an Island hugger and my stats are pretty good. Thanks for your vid. I play as Mercury 81 on American servers.
Glad it was helpful! One of the awesome things about DM that's kept her relevant all these years - besides her amazing main battery - is how flexible she is and how many valid ways to build her there are.
Raptor, there were only 3 Des Moines Class Heavy Cruisers. DSM and Newport News were both scrapped. Salem is a museum ship at the United States Naval Shipbuilding Museum in Quincy, MA.
Also, i've been waiting for this video. Des Moines is one of my favorite Heavy Cruisers (and not because i live in Des Moines. LOL). It's such a great ship.
Also, also, the Des Moines does actually make a great open water ranged CA. Between the Unique Upgrade with acceleration and rudder shift time. Picking up either in slot 4. I've done some pretty crazy open water juking in it with slots 4/6 setup for maneuverability.
The great thing about this ship is just how Multifunctional it is. Need close range support? DSM's ready. Need to blanket an area behind islands, ready. Need to delete mosquitoes, ready. Need to draw fire from a flank, she... is... ready. Such a fantastically versatile, and fun, ship.
This is precisely why DM remains so relevant in the modern game. She can fulfill a lot of different kinds of roles depending on how she is fitted out (and why we spent so long talking through the upgrades section). She isn't a one-trick pony, and the tricks she's best at she absolutely WRECKS at performing.
For me, the one thing that keeps me from trying open-water DM is the range. In order to keep the range effective you have to be playing around ~14km from your target. Against some opposing ships that's uncomfortably close. I absolutely believe she can do it though, fitted out properly in the hands of an experienced captain. I just know I'm probably not that guy. =D
Here's your thumbs up. You're putting a lot of work into this series. Love it.
Thanks a bunch!
Raptor, it is a well established fact since many many years ago, that spotter-plane DesMoines is the best DM :D
thanks Yuro
XD
I still hate him for that video. =D

You don't really get an opportunity in this fight but it's good to not that you can stagger the guns by about 1.5 seconds. If you're in a situation where you need to brawl someone down this can be extremely effective psychologically. Especially if they are bow on and you can't citadel for a one shot.
Also want to add don't dismiss the midways rockets. With that open stern she can easily do 10+k damage
Just a plug, if you can go to Salem, GO!!! She is perhaps THE best museum ship experience
I'm wondering if you could give some pointers on how to play DM in the open seas?
I find that I have trouble dodging with the DM, and it's hard to get into range of my guns without being in range of 3-4 ships. Even in 1v1 cruiser duels I feel disadvantaged because my shell arcs are so much harder to aim at 13-14km, which is about as close as I can get while they kite away with their 16-17km guns. Especially superheavies like a Marseille or Azuma that can outgun me and is not much less maneuverable.
And people say AA is useless. So much aluminum confetti falling around you, and almost no ordnance falling around your team.
I think even 6" HE will pen the 30mm deck and sides of DM. As far as I can tell the only real benefit of the 30mm is it requires 431mm to overmatch, instead of the 406mm for the 27mm. 30mm used to keep you save from all BB overmatch except the Japanese sisters.
Otherwise, great video. I too struggled with the US CA line but grew to love DM and Salem (and Annapolis too).
Without IFHE, 150-155mm shells will only pen 26mm of armor (shell diameter divided by 6, rounded up). With IFHE, that bumps to 32mm. A Tier VIII+ light cruiser captain is almost guaranteed to take IFHE because that 32mm is a meaningful number; it allows their HE shells to now full pen the decks and superstructures of a LOT more targets - such as Des Moines here - including some battleships (like the French).
@@SeaRaptor Any T8 and up with 6" HE will indeed pen 30mm. Your calculation applies to T7 and below. The higher tiers get a penetration buff.
Don't take my word for it, check the online tools and even the in-game stats of ships like Brisbane, for example, or Irian, or Cleveland.
@@jandegroot3899 Fair enough, I haven't looked in game in a while. I know that T8 was a major break point when they reworked IFHE. Wouldn't shock me that I am wrong.
you prolly get asked this question a lot but can you please include what mods you're using?
@searaptor Will you do a L2P Salem video?
Probably not. It doesn't play significantly differently from Des Moines to really justify it, IMHO. You position it differently to account for the short-range radar, but the ship itself is fundamentally a DM clone.
I have heard that playstile, Des Moines hugs island, Salem, can open sea?@@SeaRaptor
Could someone try to help me? I'm really trying to be a good cruiser player (doing bufallo now and des Moines unlocked already) but I feel like I can't never be in a good position on the map and I keep getting destroyed instantly every time 😢
What can we help with, exactly?
29:52 I thought it's only me to hate this map to the bones
Line Forms To The Rear.
Very not. I think I can count the number of games I have won from the south spawn on one hand.
Trasher hero? I think u meant anti-hero ;P
DM is like cheating in Coop. Yes i am a dirty PVE player. Great game
Presumably once you get down to the "close pass" stage of the game, the bots oblige you with all of the citadels you can manage. ;)
@@SeaRaptor the only caveat is subs. They tend to surface under you making it a ram.
@@Jayhawk226 ROFL, typical bots.
