  • DO I REALLY NEED A BATTERY TO RUN MY FISHFINDER?
    I need to replace the independent battery that runs my fish finder. This video shows how I did that so you can also do it yourself. I run a separate battery to operate my fishfinder so that the battery on my Twin Troller will not be run down by my fishfinder.
    My battery is getting old and does not hold a full charge any more than a few hours so I am replacing that battery with one of larger capacity that is almost the same size and weight and cost me almost the same price as my original lithium-battery.

    That is a really slick battery setup. I wonder if I could use that same battery for running bow and sterm LED lights. I have a PELICAN MONACO DLX PEDAL BOAT for fishing from. I don't keep her out on the lake at night but having a setup like that attached to running lights would be a wise addition. Say maybe for an approaching storm or for anytime dusk or darkness arrives before I get back to the boat dock or shoreline. Thanks for showcasing your system and I'll research getting something similar for myself. Nice video!

      Pamela, I see no reason to stop you from using this kind of battery especially for LED lights since they use little juice. The battery I originally had would run my fish finder for two all day fishing trips and this battery is considerably larger. Gerry

    As usual Gerry you have an awesome engineering mind or your just an expert at rigging things up and making them work. I plan on a second GPS fish finder as well but as I'm buying two 31 series batteries cause I fish from dusk till way past dark I should have enough power for everything. I am down to just 38 days Gerry till I make that call to Freedom Electric and it still seems so far away but I still have a foot of snow to get rid of.

    Jerry, Is there a way to use a lithium battery like from a drill to run a simple depth finder like a Lowrance 4.

    • @LunkerFishing
      @LunkerFishing  11 місяців тому

      Yes, I believe so. Somewhere , Amazon, eBay, etc. I saw an adapter that slides on to some batteries for drills and gives you wires to connect to a fish finder or something else. Do not forget to install a fuse between the battery and the item you are powering. Gerry

    Jerry where did you get your connector that connects from the fuse to the battery and what size fuse did you use thank you

    • @LunkerFishing
      @LunkerFishing  5 років тому

      Jerry, I am not sure where I got the connector from the battery to the fuse. I think I either got it at a auto parts store (like Pep Boys, Autozone, NAPA, etc.) or I got it at a place like Radio Shack or similar electrical supplies. Possibly a hardware store may have all those items also. The fuse holder came from an auto parts store and takes regular blade type small automotive fuses. The manual for the fish finder dictates the size of the fuse required. Mine is 3-amp. Good question. Gerry

    Can I use one of the small say 30 to 50000mAh rechargeable power banks (like the one I carry in my truck to jump start stranded motorists) for this same purpose..and just recharge it at the end of the day?..you have really got wheels turning in this old mechanical engineering mind of mine..Thanks I needed that!!..power pack?

    • @LunkerFishing
      @LunkerFishing  2 роки тому +1

      Clyde,
      Without knowing the demands of your fish finder I cannot really say. If your fish finder draws less than the power banks supply then yes you can use them.
      In this video I am using a smaller fish finder that I no longer use. The battery I show you was more than enough to power that fish finder for an entire day, plus part of another fishing day.
      I now have a 9" screen Garmin fish finder. I quickly found this battery was not large enough to power that fish finder for more than a couple of hours. In order to power that new fish finder I went to a 16ah Lithium battery (If you look at my more recent videos there is a link to that battery below the video in "Show More") and I find that is more than enough to power the larger unit all day plus some power left over.
      I guess to answer your question, it depends on the amps your battery holds versus the amp hours your fish finder uses then multiply that times the number of hours you will use the fish finder before recharging it again.
      I hope helps,
      Gerry

    If I were to hide the battery and then add a switch that is connected directly to one of its wires to be an on/off switch would it hurt the battery?

    • @LunkerFishing
      @LunkerFishing  3 роки тому

      It would be no different than disconnecting the battery from the fish finder at the coupling, so no it would not bother it. I would however, keep the battery in the on position so after fishing you should turn it off at the battery. You would likely be charging the battery at that time so you would notice the little red light was still on at the battery switch indicating the battery was still on.
      You should install a waterproof switch away from the battery in case you are in the weather to avoid corrosion of the contacts inside the switch. Good question! Gerry

    How do you connect the wires in the box and what type of connectors and waterproof cables did you use.

    • @LunkerFishing
      @LunkerFishing  4 роки тому

      Marty, in the video I show you how I connected all the wires. Some of the waterproof connectors I purchased on eBay but when I look I cannot find them. If you go there or Amazon and search for 12V automotive connectors. They are more waterproof than what I used. The fish finder you use may require different electrical components than what came with my unit so make sure you read your manual so you do not forget to install something. Gerry
