- Here's how to replace the instrument cluster light bulbs or gauge backlighting in a Toyota.
This procedure applies to the Toyota Solara and Camry, and is similar to the Toyota Corolla, Sienna and Highlander.
Why drive in the dark at night, not knowing what speed your going? Replacing the instrument cluster back light bulbs on your older Toyota is easy.
The instrument cluster first needs to be removed from the dash. This is usually accessed by first removing the trim panel around the cluster, and then removing 4 Phillips screws holding the cluster in.
The wires behind the cluster do not need to be disconnected to change bulbs, there should be enough room to wiggle the cluster out past the steering wheel where you can twist to unlock the bulbs.
#74 LED bulbs were used for the warning lights, and #194 LED bulbs were used for the back lights.
Once replaced, the cluster will still have a greenish tint to it, since the speedometer face itself has a greenish huge to it, even if you replaced it with white bulbs.

speedkar99 All i seem to find are 194 T10 bulbs and I'm hearing that the T10 doesn't fit in the 99 so Lara is this true and also what bulb are you showing in the video and where did you purchase it thank you for the great input
I'd say they are slightly brighter. They appear sharper, and aren't as green since there isn't a green condom on the bulb anymore.
Changing the type 70 bulbs (turn signal, cruise, check engine, door, PRDN2L) lights to LEDs made them much brighter.
Old video, but do you have to get colored bulbs for the warning lights? Or is there a colored screen that shows the actual colors, so it doesn't matter?

I recently changed the gear shift light in my 2001 Toyota Camry LE and after that I was wondering how to change the dashboard ones as well because I have several of them out also. I am going to replace mines too with some Led and probably change them all at once so they will all look the same. Keep up the good work!

There's clips all around, including one near the clock. Give it a good even tug and they should release. There is a procedure on Toyotanation on the removal for the Camry.

I used five LED bulbs, 194 wedge white 5 SMD 5050 type.
There is a green film on the gauges so it will still have a greenish glow after the LED upgrade.

Thank you thank you. It was hard to get the screws unscrewed but once I got the top two out everything else was gravy. Got the lights from auto store for about $5 a pair.

speedkar99 I did not change the light color. I just needed lights.
How I'm the world did you get those two screws out. I just say outside for 20 minutes yelling every curse word ever thought of. No luck. It's like they're super glued in.

Jason Buras I went to Walmart and bought a very short screwdriver for about $2. Regular screwdriver was too long.
Great video. Lights went out on my gas saver (2000 camry) last night. Checked the fuses today, they're good, so my guess is the lights. Hope to get on it tomorrow!
All the lights went out at once? Double check your dimmer switch too.
speedkar99 that was my thought at first too, but the light behind the gas gauge has been out for some time now, so I guess it was just time for the rest of the dash to go out. I didn't get a chance to get on it yesterday, we had bad weather in the gulf here. heading to autozone now to see if I can get some bulbs to get the project started.
Swap them for LED's :)
Or get clear bulbs and color them with a Sharpie.
speedkar99 got it all swapped out today - it was the lights. Couldn't have done it without your video. My car has the vent and the clock connected to the trim around the speedometer panel ... that was tricky ... there's a connecter behind the vent and the clock, pull hard and it will come out eventually!
Glad it helped. I do recall the Camry's that have the trim going around the vent with a clip that you have to watch out for. Did you put in colored lights?
do not forget to replace the #74 bulbs with leds the only two lights that come on are the oil light and the brake light however that can be overcome to keep them off getting high power type 74 led bulbs. I like the lexus guage cluster better you did I will do that myself to glad you made the video I downloaded it for later incase your videos ever go offline.

I have 1999 toyota solara looking for an engine for mine a lexus engine from an es300 98 modle I know a guy only works on these cars has like nine of these engines all v6 all from lexus and toyota camry all from 1992 to around 2001 all fit my and your car ( : oil pump went bad on mine thought the oil light switch was bad so because it had oil in it turns out the owner before me had run it dry on oil must have gone into shock when I put my new oil in it castrol clogged the intake tube for the oil pick up line I assume and it messed up the oil pump and blah my engine is clicking loud so time to get a new one mm hmm I love my toyota solara it is fast well when it was running correct! (:
Sorry to hear about your engine.
Most likely your car had the common sludge problem, causing the engine to rapidly consume oil and build up sludge in the engine. Make sure you change your PCV valve.
An engine from a 1997-2001 Camry V6 or a 97-98 Lexus ES300 will work for your car. Anything older is from the previous generation, so compatibility can't be guaranteed. The newer engines had variable valve timing.
VVTI is the best ever Pass on any honda toyota and bmw for life. or anything german as long as it is japanese must be toyota only.

The 194 bulb have the green sheath. The 74 bulbs are clear and get their color through the tint on the cluster face. I believe the HVAC uses #74 bulbs.

Try the license plate lights, and maybe the reverse lights.
Search on eBay for "194 5 SMD LED white". Works out better if you buy them in bulk.

LEDs are brighter but why not go for a Lexus cluster swap? See my other video on that.

Kinda. The green tint is in the gauge face itself. Having a strong color will make the green less noticeable but it won't go away.
I swapped to a Lexus ES300 cluster, much better!
So how many bulbs did you change all together?
This includes the shift indicator lamps? Such as those showing "D" and "P"?

You need 25 type 74 LED bulbs and 5 type 194 LED bulbs.
Probably need to do this. my fuel gauge doesn't light up, the right half of my speedo doesnt light up, and the left half of my rpm gauge doesn't light up.

Hi, I like your video. I have a 99 Solara and I am thinking of replacing my bulbs in my dashboard with LED bulbs and want to replace all of them. How many LED 194 & 74 bulbs do I need to buy. Also, I want to replace the bulbs in my middle console where the heater/AC section. All my lights are out. What kind of bulbs and do u have a video how to replace these? Thanks
You need 5 194 LED bulbs and roughly 24 74 bulbs. In my opinion there's no point replacing all the #74 bulbs when they won't be lit most of the time (such as battery check, traction control, and oil pressure).
I'm not sure on the HVAC bulbs, the ones I've taken out from the junkyard look like a NEOx style 3mm bulb for the automatic HVAC unit. For the console LED replacement, see my other video: ua-cam.com/video/pu-Ok1NRspw/v-deo.html
speedkar99 Thanks. Have you tried replacing bulbs on the HVAC console? basically 90% are burnt out and I want to replace then, Do you know I site that will show me how to do this?
I assume you have the auto-HVAC system? I have tried replacing them by pulling out the bulb and putting in an SMD LED in the twist socket base but it doesn't physically fit. The HVAC doesn't have a diffuser so it will have too many hot spots. I have to look into the right replacement bulb so I can upgrade my HVAC lights to LEDs too.

+John c If your pickup uses a back lit display, the process is quite similar. If it uses a 194 style bulb (or any standard size), you can buy any color LED replacements for them off eBay.

How it then becomes green? Did you use green bulbs? I have the same car and I replaced the dashboard bulbs with the long life 194 bulbs w/ green cover. The result comes with the whole dashboard green even the needles are green which not the results I want, I was hoping to look like yours.

I could really use advice or any insight you can share about an ongoing instrument cluster headache. I've already had the cluster out once to replace the speedometer (old one had ruined board from leaky capacitors) and when I put the cluster back in the speedometer works perfectly but I now have two dead light bulbs. The "D" light and the right turn signal lights aren't working. Since I planned to take the cluster out again I bought $40 worth of new bulbs from a genuine Toyota parts distributor because I wanted to keep it OEM.
The gear indicator lights I received have the little plastic base so I can pop the new bulbs into their sockets after removing the old ones; however, the turn signal lights I received are just the bulb itself: Toyota part # 90981-11018. Is it possible do you think for me to just pull these old turn signal bulbs out and push the new ones in like I can do with the bigger bulbs? A friend of mine told me I can't slide the smaller turn signal bulb out like the larger tacho/speedo "green condom" bulbs.
If I have to solder stuff, what kind of professional shop could/should I call to do that?

I went to my local auto parts store, tried to buy some 194 bulbs to replace my burnt out ones for the instrument panel and the guy told me to not get those as they're too high of a wattage and i need some weird special order bulb that when I looked it up, doesn't even look remotely close to the one that I pulled out from the panel. Do you think I'd be fine to just throw in a 194 bulb? I know from pulling the burnt one out, that the 194 is exactly what'll fit in there.

Your circuit board comes with LED's soldered in already. You could try de-soldering them if you want to change their color, or swap for a 2005 Camry cluster with some rewiring to get the optitron gauges. Did they burn out?

Certainly. Even cheaper if you remove the green condom on the bulb and color it with a Sharpie marker.

Check out eBay for the bulbs. They are 5050 SMD LED socket 194 bulbs. There's about 22 little ones (type 70 or 74) if you want to replace them all.

+Charles myd I think that one has LEDs soldered to the board. Check Toyota nation Camry forums, there was a DIY with someone who changed Thiers on a gen5 Camry.

This will not work on the 2003 Camry. The 2003 year is completely different then the cluster shown and the dash bulbs cannot be replaced. If you know of away to change them show me.
Your right the 2003 Camry is an entirely different cluster.
It uses surface mount LED's that are soldered to the board. You can find replacement LED's (I don't remember the exact model) and solder them in to replace burnt LED's or change the color.

I got Camry 2000. I took the first two screw on top off. But I can't get the plastic part off! It's like stuck! And I feel like if I force it it will break the plastic! Any ideas? Is it because the heat has melted it in and I just need to pry it a bit?

No. The Lexus uses a back lit cluster that's lit by a florescent tube. If yours is blown, you need to change the tube. Check out this video on how I disassembled the cluster: DIY Odometer Reprogramming
speedkar99 Thanks a lot man, i wish i wwouldve read your reply before i tried it. All i did was disconnect the cluster from the car and pop open the back. After i didnt see any bulbs i just put it all back together and now the speedometer and rpm needles do no turn on. I didnt disconnect anything from the actual cluster.

You probably have a loose connection where you disconnected the cluster from the wiring harness. Make sure all the wiring is tight and snug and try again.
I did that because I thought about that too but all the harnesses are tight and properly connected.
