  • The two biggest things that put people of making the switch to Electric Cars are range anxiety and access to chargers.
So I decided it was time to test whether those concerns are really a reality once you've made the switch with a 500 mile round trip from London to Plymouth.
And to be honest I surprised myself with just how easy and practical everything was thanks to both the Kia Niro's excellent range, and the ever improving availability of elector car chargers across all of the UK.

Which is the best supplier, in your opinion, for roadside charging? I'm based in Weymouth, so most of my long trips are still in the south of England. Don't want to be getting umpteen cards, as I suspect I'll only need a top-up very occasionally...

I had a road trip from bath to the lakes and back again .. every single ecotricity charger worked .. and i also used some instavolt chargers. Averaged 268 mile range going 75mph on the motorway.. not sure if Kia accidently sold me a bigger battery in my 4+ haha

Things are getting better. Ecotricity still variable though.

Good honest review, but whilst you had no real difficulties my overall impression is that getting more charge was pretty constantly on your mind and the frustration of trying to get one of the charge points to work. Hopefully when I may make the EV switch towards the end of next year (22) both the charging infrastructure and the vehicle ranges will have improved somewhat, this is simply not an issue with petrol/diesel vehicles.

Well I think recording it and editing it make it seem that way but to be honest it’s not really something you actively think about more than you would think about stopping on a normal long journey. The only one difference being when we got there I had to actively find somewhere to charge but that to about 2 minutes. But of course I could have stayed somewhere with a charger and wouldn’t have had to do that.

Sorry you had such a bad experience in Plymouth. We are getting there, it just takes us a little longer down here !

Actually thought the infrastructure and number of chargers was pretty impressive compared to some cities I’ve been too. Reliability is an issue everywhere

@@EVDoesIt Just can't understand why companies make it so difficult to pay. RFID cards, Preloaded Apps etc? It's such a pain.
Why not Apple Pay, Google Pay or just a simple Debit or Credit card ?
      Found ABRP App very useful

4 chargers in 500 miles. Blimey that’s a lot. I would of thought 3 80% chargers would of done that trip. It might be a good idea to remove the roof bars when not needed to get a bit better range. But I’m with you I would always head for the insta volt chargers mainly because they are one of the most reliable ones

To be fair, it was our own inefficiency rather than anything to do with the car. We stopped twice each way which wasn’t strictly necessary. Could have stopped once and just charged for a bit longer.
