Ok fellas, fun fact that rear locker is active to 20mph, then it disengages until vehicle speed is 20 or below. Now for things to do to your new truck that won't hurt its resale value and helps you have a better experience. First I'd remove the 3yr old stock tires and upgrade size to a 265/70/17. It will fit with no rubbing while opening up more available tires to choose from. Adding mud flaps will help that snowy step problem. You already have a bedliner planned which is great but I'd add a tonneau cover for good measure while you're at it. Something else that helps with everyday life is the bed extender. It gives you a trunk like area for your groceries when the cab is full of people. Love the truck.

Nice looking truck! Bags of sand or pea gravel are a must in winter. Not only for weight but also you can throw it under the tires if you get stuck and can’t get traction on the ice or packed snow. Works to make a little track to give room to pull another vehicle out of the ditch as well.
The black paint really pops in the snow! I love the Ford Ranger almost bought one in 2020 but ended up getting a 2019 F150 STX 4x4 for not much more money. I live in Quebec, Canada and snowtires are mandatory. A small 2WD open diff pick-up shouldn't be allowed in snowy parts of the country; they're almost dangerous. The LSD does give me some more traction, but the back end also stays more in check when one wheel hits a patch of ice in a straight line. LSD or lockers will be a must for me in my future vehicles!

Bought a 2020 Ranger Lariat FX4 with 6ft Bed for 33k new awhile back...Not a big fan of the interior or software, but as a truck it's probably one of the best values you can get. 7500lb tow rating and I think had about 1700lb payload handles most day to day needs and the engine is very fun to drive. This sooooooo much showed HOW IMPORTANT TIRES REALLY ARE! Hankook is a Korean company mostly known for their medium-duty cargo truck and semi-truck tires designed for rainy day highway and city driving where that tread design will be OPTIMUM! In Colorado, where black ice and deep snow is a big issue these are NOT the tires for the job. My suggestion is Goodyear Territory for COMBINED city and off-road driving and for PURE 4x4 off-road deep-and-compacted snow rated tires I would suggest Goodyear Duratracs OR Nitto EXO Grapplers! For the amount of driving FTL does in multiple environments where switching tires from city to pure off-road tires multiple times in a year simply isn't cost-effective, it looks like the Goodyear Territory wins out even over the KO2s for this type of mid-size truck! I have said in earlier comments that this Ford Ranger XL/XLT-series is more of a "Ranch Hand" truck and I stand by that so if you are looking for true interior comfort and tech + luxury, you will have to go up several trim levels and another $15,000+ USD extra in price! As a BIG SUGGESTION, remove those front seats and put in Recaro Ergonomic series seats which will literally save your butts during long drives! Before any lift, wrap job or camper and winch accessories, GET NEW RECARO ERGONOMIC SEATS for the front! V
As far as I can tell , especially the FX4 - it's a contender. It would be a great competitor to the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. You can also run 265 65 17 on the Trailhawk with no cutting (probably need a lift though). Ranger can be built beyond the Cherokee Trailhawk but but a two inch lift on both of them and they'll both be VERY capable! Tacoma TRD , Ranger FX4, Toyota 4 Runner, Toyota FJ and Cherokee Trailhawk - all very very close IMHO stock and or lifted two inches. The guys that can lift beyond 2 inches basically will beat the Cherokee Trailhawk but inside those limits it's very very close. I DO love that Ford let's you buy a stripped down FX4. Not possible with Cherokee Trailhawk.
Rename this episodeto; Are my stock tires any good in the snow. Tires are the only thing touching the snow regardless of the vehicle or drive configuration. Slap some Michelin Crosstread 2s on that thing and redo the test to understand what I'm saying. Love your show, keep em coming.
Traded a 2020 Ranger STX Supercab (locking diff no FX4) for a 2023 Tacoma Trail Edition. Ranger was quicker but the10 speed tranny takes a bit to warm up when it gets cold (same as my F150) and the ride is bouncy and feels tippy at times. One of the big complaints on the Tacoma is the seating position but the Taco has a better dead pedal and after road trips from NH to VA to visit my kids, the Taco was a better ride. My biggest gripe on the Ranger was that when I replaced the crappy stock stereo with an Alpine system I lost the Ford Pass. Sucked but after one trip through NYC, Baltimore, and DC using my iPhone hanging off a windshield mount, definitely worth it. Ford should have been embarrassed to put that in a vehicle in 2020.
I had a 2019 fx4 ranger, had everything you could want. Loved the truck, BUT I constantly having problems with the transmission. Not the mechanical but the electronics. Went back to dealership 3 times to reflash the computer, the 4th time had to be towed in because it wouldn't shift out of 3rd gear. Finally just traded it in for f150 xlt sport crew cab. First year rangers had issues with transmissions.
@@ALMX5DP The first set of LED lights that I installed in my wife's 2013 Accord had a minifan to keep the light cooled off so it wouldn't burn up. The fan failed on one of them and the light burned up. So I then bought LED lights that had builtin heat sink. They are still going strong now after 4 years. So stay away from LED's with builtin fans and go with the heat sinks.
@@danielvillarreal8892 yeah it is a potential point of failure, but i think many of high end ones use them due to the increased cooling capability over the ribbon heatsink types. Either way as long as they perform well, but I think TFL should do a comparison as they've mentioned before about the heat output of the bulb not being enough to defrost or defog headlight lenses. Watched one of these last night slide backwards down a snow covered road while spinning 1 front and 1 rear tire trying to go forward 🙄. Grandma in a 2019 ford explorer came along shortly after and went right up without ever spinning a tire🤣
Could be lots of reasons, bud. Still in 2 HI, bald tires, etc. And how nice of Grandma to yell out the year of her vehicle as she so easily drove right past you 😂😂 Keep trying though
Glad to see the ranger getting some good press. But yeah the stock fx4 tires leave a little to be desired, but they never got me stuck. That being said I much prefer my Duratracs for snow duty.
Nice real world video with your stock Ford Ranger. I am looking forward to seeing the new Ranger in 2023. The current truck is competitive in most categories but a little long in the tooth. It is on my short list.
Looked better on the day you bought it. lol But with the BLACK bed liner you just put in it, it will remain ascetically pleasing to look at. Nice testing here. Good to see the vehicle being used in real everyday environment that the masses would be in. (vs MOAB) I don't want to say I was overly impressed, but it was as good as I figured it would be. (which is good) Rear lockers in the snow? Tommy knows that is pointless. lol I think it is interesting how many vehicles you have shown of late that allow for rear lockers to be engaged when NOT in 4WD. Something I sometimes with my 4R would allow.
My F150 STX came with Hankooks Dynapro’s, ok in the snow, terrible on graveled forestry roads, 3 flats punctured by Gravels, very soft compound, at 40k replaced em with Michelins, don’t ride as well, but great in snow and no flats.
Id be curious how the Michelin Crossclimate Agilis perform on the Ranger. Supposed to be the highest rated “all weather” truck tire for snow and ice. We have an awd crossover with crossclimate 2’s and it’s transformed into an unstoppable tank in the winter.
I had those Hankook Dynapro ATM's on my 2004 Ranger. They had the mountain snowflake on them, so I don't know why yours don't. Maybe those are a special OEM only version? I just recently put new Dynapro AT2 Xtreme on my truck. They are a definite improvement over the old ATM model (which they don't seem to make anymore). They also have the snowflake rating, and have been doing really well here the snow in WY.
My 2021 Tremor does amazing in the snow. The General Grabbers are mountain snowflake rated and do very nicely. My only complaint is that I can't use snow mode in 2wd. I really like the dampening of the throttle and increased traction control in snow mode I just wish I didn't have to use 4wd the entire time when there are patches of bare pavement.
The Dynapros are winter rated in other sizes, I put winters on mine. Had a 2020 XLT FX4 and it was a good truck. Bed extender and liner came with it, and I added an MX4 Backflip tonneau cover. Ended up needed more seats, so I got an Explorer. Otherwise I'd still have it.
I have Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10s on my 99 Ford Ranger XL Sport. They work ok in winter. I have a set of studded Firestone Winterforce UV and they are so much better, despite costing less.
I had a 2019 ranger Xlt with the fx4. I enjoyed the truck a lot. The only thing I didn’t like was that it didn’t have a push start ( with an xlt you should have that by 2019). It also felt kind of dated too.
The dated part is understandable when you figure its a design from 2012 in Australia. I like the key in my xlt but an option for it wouldn't be a bad idea. The next years model should take care of these issues though
They are dated because they had already been on sale in other markets around the world for at least five years before arriving in the US. The all new model is on sale in other countries right now.
Tommy, which 4WD trucks have a problem at times to switch into 4WD-Low? Do all 4WD trucks switch into 4WD-High without a problem? I like the black exterior.
38k pretty good for what you get but that infotainment system is pretty abysmal . Cant even really use google maps at all on it . Only complaint . Seems great for snow, but definitely needs pro rated tires for heavy snow off roading
Put Clean Snow from a field (not road treated) in Back of Bed for Weight during the Snow driving - as the weather gets warmer - the truck returns to normal... Rehearse and get your outlines straight....
That seems like a pretty good truck. I'm really curious for you to do all the standard tests. The black seems to look pretty good on video to me. I don't know if I would do the red accents or not. Great job guys. Love the snow videos
Because the weight of the truck and no snow tires; I think it did very well. Now, add some weight and snow tires and this thing would probably be great.
Way better than my FWD S90 D4 without all-seasons tires 😂. For real, I went to a snowy place with that car only with textile chain. Please kids, don’t do that. It was dangerous asf. Next time Imma rent some Ranger
Can you comment on the windshield washer pattern and wiper performance. These two are crucial for safe driving because good clear view is important. Time, volume of fluid and wipe count for quick and complete cleanup 😀
I have a 2019 Ranger exactly like yours, but the XLT model..... it is really good in the snow. My only gripe is in slush and crud the trailer/tailights plug in the back drivers side gets covered and the computer goes nuts thinking the trailer is plugged in then off every time I use the brake pedal. I have read on the 6G Ranger forum that this happens. I need to put dielectric grease in the plug to stop that. Hope it does not happen to you. Its been a great truck for 2 years, and I now have a little over 50k on it. Thanks for the great videos.
I'm a Ford Ranger fanatic little Leary on the new body style but love the look of this truck definitely probably because it's black I hope you guys do upgrades to it would love to see 35s but 33s is okay and make it make turbo noises
the chevy colorado seems like a lot better truck. way nicer console and screen on the interior but the fords seats look better. a wt colorado crew cab with a 6 foot box and tow package with a automatic locker . colorado seems to be a little bigger on the inside also . you can also turn the traction control off the chev products if you hold the button. It will be nice when they redesign the ranger interior it just looks so much like a after thought with cheap buttons in random spots.
Would love to see a few upgrade videos on this truck. Maybe try something like a headlamp upgrade from HeadlightRevolution. Very Cool used truck though.

Really good truck. My brother bought a brand new 2019 ranger and loves it. I'm a big guy and i did not quite fit in it so I'll stick with f150s.
Get rid of the halogen headlight bulbs and install LED in place.
Weren’t they complaining about how LEDs don’t melt ice and snow off? Would be an interesting test and video though.
Dont think I've seen anyone do a back to back test for that.
@@ALMX5DP Just about every new car now comes standard with LED lights. I live in the Dallas area and it doesn't snow here. It hasn't been a problem for me.
@@danielvillarreal8892 kinda my thought too, I suppose weird how many at TFL feel it’s that way.
Suggestion first upgrade should be those headlights.
Pack some snow in the back of the truck. Could use the extra weight in back
I’m pretty impressed with the Ranger myself great review 👍🏻
Love that y’all got a ranger!!! Tfl ftw 🤘
I have a 2020 XLT and have had no difficulties with the Bridgestone stock tires that came on the truck. Mine is the 'Sport' edition.
I think Ford makes the best trucks on the market.
Father and son getting along today
Those are the tires that came standard on the 2015-2017 F-150 Platinum with the FX4. Love them on my F-150.
Seems like a nice truck. Just the right amount of equipment.
Had Hancooks All terrain tires on my 3 Comanches back in 2008. Now I run Falken Wildpeak trail tires on my Renegade Trailhawk
Very good all around vehicle, they tow really well for they’re size too. I’m curious about the reliability in the long run
I’ve heard they’re real reliable. Ford dealerships rarely see them
My F150 STX came with Hankooks Dynapro’s, ok in the snow, terrible on graveled forestry roads, 3 flats punctured by Gravels, very soft compound, at 40k replaced em with Michelins, don’t ride as well, but great in snow and no flats.
I have a 2020 F-150 with the rear lock and it disengages the rear locker after 20-25 mph. I think it’s the same with all fords?
It is
My dad used to fill the bed with snow for added weight over the rear tires.
Put a proper set of winter tires on it and be done.I'm running Cooper Snow Claw winters on my F150, night and day difference over an all terrain tire
I gotta move into a neighborhood like these ones love the vids as always. Thx for always being the best vehicle media
Lightning 💙 Blue💙
I find limited slip to work better in the snow than lockers...to avoid the crab walking issues
Proper snow tires is the most important thing.
Tommy, which 4WD trucks have a problem at times to switch into 4WD-Low? Do all 4WD trucks switch into 4WD-High without a problem?
I like the black exterior.
Tacoma maybe?
I don't have the FX4 on my STX and still have the recover/two hook on the front.
Dana makes the ultamate 44 for the bronco and It also fits the ranger. Please add one to this truck and make a Comparison.
The Ranger is slept on hard.
I know that truck I’m no stranger!!
Shows what good value that Ram 1500 was.
That seems like a pretty good truck. I'm really curious for you to do all the standard tests. The black seems to look pretty good on video to me. I don't know if I would do the red accents or not. Great job guys. Love the snow videos
My torsen lsd helps my miata in the snow just drive smooth and no issues if you get on it in a turn you are just going to slide
Hey guys nice looking truck. I've had three sets of Hankook tires on new vehicles. They've all been terrible in the snow and they do not wear well.
well done guys, like the truck too!
All of these manufacturers pumping in fake engine sound just need to stop.
Need to still test a 21 nissan frontier pro 4x in the snow all stock it's still better then the Ford ranger and it has the same tires
For such a new truck those headlight housings looked super foggy. Might be worth looking into that.
Wish you guys would compare the last generation frontier with the new one
Filmed at Roman’s winter chalet?
Because the weight of the truck and no snow tires; I think it did very well. Now, add some weight and snow tires and this thing would probably be great.
Way better than my FWD S90 D4 without all-seasons tires 😂. For real, I went to a snowy place with that car only with textile chain. Please kids, don’t do that. It was dangerous asf. Next time Imma rent some Ranger
Seems like a great truck.. love the color and look.
Love my 2021 XLT. Has the rear locker too but I put K02s on at 600 miles. That said, why not go with the locker option? It's a no brainer, imo.
Can you comment on the windshield washer pattern and wiper performance. These two are crucial for safe driving because good clear view is important. Time, volume of fluid and wipe count for quick and complete cleanup 😀
The only issue I have with mine is the wipers aren't that good. After you replace them, it should be just fine.
I've been dealing with this all winter so far and it drives me insane
@@ben94gt Ranger5g forums say to put dieletric grease in there. I tried it, still does it. I am still searching for a solution.
I'm a Ford Ranger fanatic little Leary on the new body style but love the look of this truck definitely probably because it's black I hope you guys do upgrades to it would love to see 35s but 33s is okay and make it make turbo noises
Are those 265/70/17s?
this exact model tire on the Frontier Pro-4X in 265 75 16 is 3 peak snow rated
the chevy colorado seems like a lot better truck. way nicer console and screen on the interior but the fords seats look better. a wt colorado crew cab with a 6 foot box and tow package with a automatic locker . colorado seems to be a little bigger on the inside also . you can also turn the traction control off the chev products if you hold the button. It will be nice when they redesign the ranger interior it just looks so much like a after thought with cheap buttons in random spots.
Would love to see a few upgrade videos on this truck. Maybe try something like a headlamp upgrade from HeadlightRevolution. Very Cool used truck though.
I love my ranger
At least you have the better guage cluster this time the more advanced one is hard to read I'm glad I got a base model just for that
I love seeing more of these everyman trucks doing everyman things. I'm bored with super trucks that I can only afford in my dreams.
“Toyota owners losing their minds when you can get a locker as a stand alone option in a base model” and not having to be in 4lo😅
