Often roto-scoping also has an uncanny feeling but video reference can be essential for complicated motions. There is a trick Disney animators used to use which is to not trace/draw over the video directly, but just to only draw a 'doll' shape initially over only the key-frames of action in the video, and then to take those key-frames and draw the character over the top, and fill in the in-betweens after without any references. Removing the extra information in the video actually helps the rotoscoped parts of an animation to feel more at home in the animation style-wise and less jarring or off-putting. It encourages more exaggeration and in filling in the low-outs and follow through to look handcrafted instead of realistic. It reminds me of what you're saying here, that the flaws/limitations of any medium are actually part of the appeal/charm in the long run.
The movements are so well animated and fluid. The blood slashes are top tier!
Awesome! Really inspiring!
Fantastic portfolio. Honestly this is what blender is best used for. Never mind realism, this is art

Interesting process. Nice presentation
Wish I could find a link to the full animation so I could share it with my industry people and then have them watch this.
