The enchanted forest is bound with thread. It is the type of book you can break the spine. The old fashioned sketchbooks were bound like that so the artist could flip the book back on itself. Simply locate dead center in the book and open it back on itself and break the spine down. Then go one page at a time in either direction and break each page open so the book will lay flat when coloring. Cheers!
This is incredible! Love your colours Peta! Those colouring pencils have worked beautifully! Jx
+Johanna Basford Thank you very much, Johanna! Your work is incredibly beautiful and very inspiring. The pages sing to me to colour them... the hardest choice being which one to choose. Thank you for turning your talent to producing these lovely books.
At school we use a lot of STEADLER too
Ms.basford I love your work thank you for your art.
I'm just thrilled watching you color. You're so very talented. Bless.
Thank you for sharing the book and your lovely coloring of the illustrations. You have a wonderful eye.
Your work is fabulous! and such dedication to go in order.. I bop around here and there and I am also attracted to the double spreads in all the books.. Thanks for all the little tips! :) I have a coloring FB page and I often share your technique videos there.
+Chrissy Morin Thanks. I'm glad you're enjoying them and i hope they can be of some use.
wow that double page of the forest is just stunning, I am so amazed!
Peta, OMG, this makes me want to throw away my own Enchanted Forest, I colour like a 3-year old! You're so inspiring! Merry Christmas, X.
As the lady at my local art shop says, "there's no such thing as bad coloring. Even a child can see the beauty in their work, we just have to find it."
You are not the only one, but that means we have LOTS space to improve (^ . < *
I bought mine today and I was thinking the same thing...
Same
Same 😂 hers is so perfect mine is all over the place
OMG!! What a fabulous "colorist" you are!! I'm totally blown away by your skills and I hope you continue to upload your finished pages...and tutorials. Lots and lots of tutorials!! Lol! Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us and I look forward in combing over every video of yours.
Your colored pages are beautiful...love your technique. I so hope you continue to share your art!
OMG, I'm only 4.44 mins in this video and just have top say WOW, beautiful colours, I love colours, I can only just get excited by opening a box of pencils with all colours in range, but to see these pages coloured in, stunning!
Gorgeous! I love how you did the castle page with all the yellow/orange/red tones!
Wow. I had put aside my Enchanted Forest colouring book because my ideas for colouring had run thin. You just opened my mind to new ways to colour, I'm in awe. Thank you! I'm going to go and tackle a new page with your images in mind.
You do such fabulous reviews! And fabulous work too! Sometimes I save a screenshot of your work to remind myself that leaves don't always have to be green and mirror images don't always have to match, etc. (Like your double spread of the trees in this review.) You use colors so well and blend so beautifully! Thank you. You are one of my favorite artists on all of UA-cam. I started out with only markers, then went to pencils. I am only just graduating from Crayola pencils, lol, but I am excited and proud of some of my work! I wanted to make sure coloring wasn't a temporary interest for me before investing in Faber Castell, etc., and it is certainly not going away. I am loving it! Thanks for your inspiration. :)
Your pages are stunning! I love all the pencil/pen/marker info. TFS!
I love your first page it looks like like a vintage, old animations and I think that is so unique and just Amazing
I adore your enthusiasm. Couldn't help but to get chills when you revealed the dragons! Thank you for the incredible tour, one day I've love to color this.
I love how you colour!!! Love the videos!
Wow! You are AMAZING!! You inspired me to start colouring and I can't wait for my enchanted forest book to arrive!

Oh goodness your results are incredible! I would had never thought to make mine look like that at all! It must be amazing to flip through when you're done!
I have never seen such beautiful coloring. Thank you for sharing.
I am glad that you enjoyed it.
Wow. Stunning colour's. My friend had bought me The Secret Garden and although I did a bit of it, I found it daunting as it was too much like hard work, plus I was using cheap crayons. However, having seeing your beautiful artwork, and plus I've invested in some primsacolour pencils, you've inspired me to try again, so thank you very much.
Oh my goodness, absolutely beautiful!! You are an amazing artist, just so pretty to look at. I just wish I could get mine to look like yours. Can't wait to see more!!!
I just ordered the Secret Garden, and i can't wait to get started, this will be my first time coloring the adult coloring books, they look so beautiful.
I'm so glad I bought the book now, you inspired me to be more brave to try out different stuff and techniques!
I find arts and crafts so relaxing and so i am so delighted that I found your inspiring online video
Wow! Absolutely beautiful colouring! I have just brought myself the enchanted forest colouring book and I hope I can do it half as much justice as you have! I would also love it if you were to do some tutorials on blending and technique. Thank you for sharing your gorgeous colourings!
+Dee Bliss Thank you, Dee. Tutorials on colouring with pencils and also using Inktense pencils are in the pipelines. :)
+Peta Hewitt I look forward to your tutorials! I've been looking for a cheaper alternative to the polychromos and have heard some great reviews about the Marco Raffine pencils (also oil based). I've already ordered myself a set as they were very cheap at £14 for the full 72 +pp! And I was wondering if you had used these and if so, would you share your opinion on them? Thank you, Dee x
+Dee Bliss certainly, Dee. I have a set of these. if you go to my blog you'll find a a review on them. heres the link: la-artistino.com/2015/10/01/marco-raffine-pencils-review/
Thank you 🙏🏻 for sharing! So happy of what I heard you saying about Derwent Artists Pencils because my 120 wooden box has just arrived... I think they will be great for learning how a patient layering work is going to pay off in the end I hope! Again thanks for your time and wonderful colors!
Wow. These are absolutely gorgeous. I'm stunned.
Great video! Your artwork is very beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
On the strength of your review, I have ordered both this one and the garden one, as Im very keen to play. Thanks for the review, its sparked eagerness I never thought I would have for a colouring book. lol hugs Tibby xxx
I have this book and i love it! It is so fun to colour in and is quite spectacular. I think you have done an outstanding job of colouring it in!!!
This is the first video of yours I've seen and I must say that your coloring is gorgeous. My husband and I were watching and were so amazed by the variety you could get out of the pencils. My favorite page was the sunset looking one.
This are great tips and walk through Peta for those people are are slightly less experienced! I am so looking forward to seeing what you have completed in this book in the future. You must upload more videos of how you are getting on with this book!! :D Thanks
You're so creative, well done this pictures are beautiful 😍
You definitely paint with all the colors of the wind!
+Hannah sea I've seen someone colour this page with that theme in mind, complete with the Disney characters sketched in. It looked great. :)
Love your videos, Peta. Just bought Enchanted Forest (same print you have) and looking forward to start coloring in it.
Your coloring is beautiful can't wait to get my book!
You are a wonderful artist just love your work. Have learned a lot just watching your videos, keep them up.
I have just bought this book and I am so exited to try it.
Thank you for the lovely video! As always, you inspired me with g eat ideas! I also have this book and look forward to seeing what I can do!
I admire your coloring! Such an inspiration!
so beautiful and stunning..and also inspiring me to colouring my own book..thank you so much..^^
I started coloring the inside cover of this book. It's a great way to practice coloring leaves with shading and coordinating colors. I'm keeping a "diary" of the colors I used.
your coloring is GORGEOUS!! luv it!!
Hello Peta,
So lovely to meet you. I've just come across your channel & i haven't stopped watching them.
I'm 30 & disabled, one of my disabilities happens to be EDS type III where my joints sublux / dislocate (including fingers / wrists), but I was a keen artist growing up but lost confidence after a poor experience during school years. Ive been eyeing up the adult colouring books for over a year now & finally took the plunge this Christmas just gone & purchased both The Enchanted Forest & is it the Magic Jungle? By Johanna Basford. I purchased 2 sets of staedtler pencils, both the basic Noris set & the Ergo ones. As eager as I am to give it a really good go, I am also a little overwhelmed!
Colouring has obviously come quite a long way & I just don't know where to start.
Your videos have helped try to put things in order for me, & I think first thing tomorrow I will start to make a few colour wheels.
I did have a little go with a few of my pencils & found I need to press quite hard with them, less so with the Ergo's (& they do blend beautifully once you get the correct colour combination - this was done on scrap paper). I was wondering what other pencils you may recommend for those with a little less mobility ? Moreso for me on bad days when I simply can't press down so hard. I feel like this would be a truly great escape for me, so I would like to get anything that would aid in making the experience that much more enjoyable! I heard about the prisma colours but they're a little out of my price range I'm afraid.
Have you shown anymore of this book at all? A progression video? I would be very interested to see. Your work is so inspiring & uplifting. It's really encouraging me to get going.
Thank you so very much for taking the time to make these videos! I look forward to continuing to watch many more.
Laura x
I enjoyed your video and appreciate learning new techniques from you. You're very creative and inspired me to plan ahead more with my colorings.
I was so excited bc a few of my pages came out looking good, but this just shows me I have along way to go! This is incredible, congrats :)
gonna get mine like this in the next few days, ty so much for showing us what it looks like inside. Your coloring is amazing I wish i was that good. Please make more videos maybe I can learn from you :-)
I love how you make your backgrounds with your pencils. I use soft pastels often to make my backgrounds, which can create a very soft and smooth color. The white gelpen is amazing! I love those sparkly effects :)
+Ingenious by Me Thanks. Both ways are a great way to cover up that bare white paper. pastels are fast, soft and smooth. Pencils take longer but add texture and colour interest. And i LOVE my Uniball Signo white gel pen. :)
I'm just getting started on these... my gosh I wish I could color like you
Your colouring is absolutely beautiful. Maybe you should do a tutorial on blending techniques with the faber castell pencils you use. I'd love to see how you blend with them 😊👍🏻🎨
+keeley carver Hi keeley. I have plans to make tutorials in the future so keep checking back. :)
this is absolutely mesmerizing!!!
Yes! Thank you for replying :) I am gradually watching all your inspiring videos and look forward to more. You make me want to buy The Magical City colouring book lol. I had passed on it thinking it's so intricate that it looks like a jumble of lines to me and that I can't possibly do them justice, but you totally brought the illustrations to beautiful life :) do you have Daria Song's The Time Garden and The Time Chamber? Those books are also amazing! Magical, whimsical and so pretty I think you might enjoy those too. If you do, I can't wait to see your pages of them :) take care and thank you so much again.
I rececntly broke my foot which in turn got me started in the world of coloring books, and I love your reveiws of products! It opened me up to the artist quality products. They do make the difference in the work that you. Right now I am practicing with my crayolas but after seeing you work and reviews I did buy the polychromos and prisma colored pencils. I seen on one of your works you had outlind your work in jell pens and made some glittery effects as well can you tell me if you reviewed jell pens or what is your favorite to use. I hope one day to get as good as you! Thank you very much for all you have done......
+Delores Kernagis I haven't yet reviewed gel pens. I love them, though and have used them in several of my books. They're great for adding a bit of sparkle.
How did you get the beautiful outside green background. Did you draw the stars etc. with that special pen?
So gorgeously stunning! Please consider filming a process video of you colouring so we can actually see how you apply your techniques with the different mediums you have :) I'm particularly interested in seeing a process video on colouring with derwent inktense, fc Polychromos and albrecht durer as well as prismacolour premiere. I didn't see you show one but have you tried colouring with tombow water based markers? If yes, how did they do on these and other adult colouring book papers? You just do such gorgeous gorgeous colouring, thank you for sharing! :)
+Kai399scrap Hi Kai. I do have a speed video of myself colouring with Derwent Inktense in a Magical City colouring book and another tutorial on colouring with Polychromos and Derwent Artist pencils. Check them out. :)
Wow. I hope with practice I can be as good as you one day. Bloody well done!
Your pages are so beautiful! I hope one day I can be as good as you are!
to get the pages to not stick together anymore, after your completely done with the page(s), get a candle, not a burning/lit candle of course, and use that on the page by rubbing it over the colouringpage. It will prevent sticking. Or if not wanted that way, put some waxpaper in between pages.
+abigail van der Pluijm I don't have any issues with my pages sticking together, pencils generally don't. I know this is a problem with art journals using some wet media such as certain acrylic paints.
amazing colors! you are very talented!
Love your videos Peta and your colouring. I was wondering would you kindly do a video showing how you did your background on that beautiful two pager? I would really appreciate it.
OMG your colouring is sooooo amazing it's better than mine and I coulour in the enchanted forest book too 😍😍😍😍
+Atsuko Chan Thank you
i am so jealous about how beautiful she has made it
Freya Louise saaame
I love your colouring technique. I got the animal kingdom for Xmas and I cannot wait to get started. :)
this is so pure. now I'm excited
wow I thought the first page came like that, but you did it. you're amazingly talented!
Thank you
I have this book I colour it its so pretty love your arts
I love your videos!!!!! Please do more!!
Beautiful work Peta :) I would love to see you do the page with the telescope & the castle I just brought my wife this book along with a set of Inktence pencils & a set of Pentel Aqua Brush's for her birthday Shhhhhh. But I think I'll be the one attempting that one myself :)Oh I also have a UA-cam channel but its very far removed from the gorgeous work you do.Keep it up can't wait for the next vid.
You gave me a great idea for the owl ty
Oh pleeeeasssseee show us an update. I would love to see what else you've coloured in that book now.
+PinkJasmine78 if you visit my blog at la-artistino.com i have pictures of most of my latest colourings.
Peta, I notice that most of your pages look 'shiny'...somewhat of a slight glossy look like a magazine. Why is that? Do you spray each page with that Workable-Fixative? @3:13-3:35...the glossiness is quite noticeable where you are touching the pages with left hand. It's really a nice look. I'm hoping it's because of the fixative and not just your camera. :)
+Sylvia Catalano Hi Sylvia. The shiny quality is inherent with a dense application of the pencils. Good pencils have either a wax or oil binder to house the pigment and they make the coloured areas look shiny. (Cheap and nasty pencils have a clay binder and don't tend to be as shiny.)
You've made up my mind, to buy this book ! Or at least put it in the long and ever growing queue.
the double page colouring is gorgeous :)
Hi Peta, your work is just beautiful. I attempted colouring for adults a few months ago but wasn't happy with what I'd done so just gave up. I've decided to give it another go and have just purchased the Enchanted Forest. I was lucky enough to be bought a set of 72 Derwent Artist coloured pencils by my Dad when I was about 14 or 15, for art lessons at school. I've just got them out again 30 years on! I know nothing about layering and blending colours, although I'm trying to learn as much as I can from your channel, but noted you mentioned in this video that you need to be a bit more patient with the Derwent's and need to do more layering. Any advice re this would be great. Thanks
Oh my gosh your colouring is friggin gorgeous😮😍
This is amazing! I love your coloring ideas :) Now I see that Polish eddition is so much worse; especially the paper which is too thin so I cannot use any markers and I have to be very gentle with gel pens. It also doesn't have this cool cover. Once again, wonderfully done! Cheers :)
Hi your pages are amazing. Do you have a video on how you add colour to the backgrounds? Particularly how you did the pink and yellow on the double spread which btw is breathtaking!!!
+Farhana Rahman Hi Farhana. That background is done with coloured pencil layered several times and lots of patience. :)
So glad I found your channel. I love your coloring. You do an amazing job! Have you tried the Derwent Colorsoft pencils, they are so smooth like FC or Prismacolors and half the price and color much better than the inktense.
+Laurie C I have 4 Derwent Coloursoft pencils amongst my collection which I also use. I don't think these pencils get enough love. They are great to use and if I didn't have so many good quality sets I would certainly buy these. Inktense are meant to be activated with water before they can show you their true colour. Check out my Magical City videos where i feature them.
+Nichola Feeney, I agree with you that the Colorsofts are easier to blend than the Polychromos. If I dare say it, I prefer them over the Polychromos. The Colorsofts and the Prismacolor Premieres are my favorite pencils to color with. And I have never had a problem with breakage even though my Prismacolors are made in Mexico. I use the Dahle 155 professional grade rotary pencil sharpener. It's the best pencil sharpener I've ever used.
awesome and stunning!
It's look really great!!! OMG
Fantastic work!!!
what beautiful pictures. wish i could colour and shade like that :(
just amazing
I bought this book but your amazing colouring has put mine to shame lol I always struggle to work out what colour palette to use and always end up using anything and the colours just end up not looking right together :-( but very jealous now of your beautiful colouring lol
Very nice!
I think it is well worth saying that fine pens or sharp tip pencils are required for the small tiny parts to colour.
Beautiful work! Curious to know how you completed the green background on the double page spread at 5:57- was that strictly pencil or did you incorporate pastel as well? love the effect!
+BONNIEJDAVIS That was all pencil. I coloured it using the side of the core, not the point, to get that type of texture in it.
Peta Hewitt what type of color pencils do you use? These are amazing
Hey there seeing your review for Enchanted Forest by Johanna has made me set on getting this colouring book for the future as I have been looking into it for a while now.
I saw how beautiful you coloured your pages and I was wondering what sort of coloured pencils did you use for them to look so nice?
INCREDIBLE!!!😍😍😍
Just ordered this book from amazon!
holy shii thats really beautiful done good job!
I would love to see your dogs
This is so beautiful.
Your colouring is amazing xxx
+Marie Landon Thanks :)
It's so pretty!
I'm just receiving my first coloring book this weekend. Would you mind listing the brands of pens/pencils that you use?
Enjoyed your video. Looking forward to getting started.
+Missy Emrich Hi Missy. I've been asked to do that a few times so I might do a short video on my work station sometime in the future. The short list for now is Faber castel polychromos and Derwent Artist pencils, Derwent Inktense pencils, Tombow markers and Staedtler fineliners. BUt I have a lot of other stuff I also like to use.
I think that is a great idea for a video.
Thanks for the info!
