If CGC drops the grade on a reholder request, they're admitting they were wrong the first time they graded it. So much for their 'Guarantee'.

That's messed up - you can't move the goalposts like that, especially while CGC's grading standards themselves have changed over the years. They should just be checking for issues like inner well swapped or book damage, not completely regrading with whatever standards are in vogue; today they're hitting shadows and tanning hard, maybe tomorrow they'll hit stains harder or writing harder. I hope that Comic Link Transformers #1 9.9 never needs a reholder, with its slight miswrap and manufacturing errors top of back cover.

    • @nixknacks-comics

Exactly my thought as I watched this. If you send a book in for reholder - so long as the inner well isn't damaged, it should get the same grade. OR, like they did for @Stickygoose, replace the book. I'm so done with encapsulation.

  • @jimzonjavier2854
    @jimzonjavier2854 13 днів тому

Great points. Per CGC "The grade assigned to the book should not change, unless any damage occurred post-encapsulation, in which case the grade will be adjusted accordingly." If we keep this in mind, a dust shadow just at the bottom edge was likely there before it was initially slabbed. It wasn't a 9.9 to begin with, but should not have been regraded because the defect would have likely not formed post-encapsulation.

Sun fading is the culprit. Never buy a book in an old holder if the grade isn’t really dark black. A greyed-out grade means the book was displayed and got UV damage.

That sucks! I have the only two graded 9.8's on the census of a very low print comic of a very popular character. There's no freaking way I'm sending in either of them to get reholdered, for a flashy new label, a scratch on the case, nothing! I'll live with any cosmetic issues that come about on the cases.

I have a 9.8 X-Men #137 signed by Chris Claremont and John Byrne in a CGC green label. Byrne hasn't signed much if anything for decades and is retired now. I'd love to get it verified by JSA for the yellow label - but no way I'm risking it. I'm convinced it's their signatures - good enough for me.

Thanks for posting this content. It's vital to know the market trends and shifts as 'us' collectors do have a lot at risk.
Case in point, I have 3 CGC 9.8 signature series books which are pretty rare. In total I think there only exists 3 total, and it's of a rare signature.
Long story short, they are all in the old case, and I wanted to get them reholdered... but my instincts told me, now with this whole 'reholder gate' or whatever they are calling it, I knew in my gut that CGC is now going to hammer down on resubs to avoid another incident.
I don't know if my 9.8s are true 9.8s, I think so? But it's now a gamble, when a reholder should be, a reholder. I love the new custom labels, but I do not want to risk a grade drop on these signature books for a stupid label.
    Sad.

The owner should go to cgc about this. My friend had an AF 15 drop half a grade when he got a Stan Lee sig added. He complained and got his old grade reinstated. That's what this person should do. And then sell it and get as much money back as they can.

I also agree with the other comments about not sending in a 9.9 for any reason. I have two 9.9s; one has a spelling errors and the other has some light scuffing on the inner well of the back cover. I'm not willing to risk a downgrade to 9.8 by sending them in for re-holdering. I can live with the spelling error and light scuffing.

For my part, I'll stick with the case they came in. Folks are just diluting themselves into thinking that every book crossing their hands is a diamond in the rough. Like Mephisto in Wanda Vision, look, in the flower, is that a 7.5 looking to be a 9.8? CGC slabbed them in plastic that may or may not survive if exposed to light, air, dust, sound... live with it. Place them in a mylar sleave, they look nicer and last longer. Though, they did raise the value of the now lone 9.9. So, someone again smiling all the way to the bank.

There is a chance you might get very pissed off when you get the grade.. my friend that goes to all the local comic con‘s with me he sent daredevil 168, 9.8 back to CGC and got the book signed. I’m not sure if it was Frank Miller or Stan Lee and it came back 9.6, which brought the value down considerably, he was so angry he took the book and flung it against his wall.🤯🤯🤯

CGC is losing money on people refraining from sending in reholder orders. They make almost as much money as grading, and with a custom label it’s about equal. You’ll see them all of a sudden make a change to combat this, and put a seal/engraving on the inner well to note the grade. Once they are sure the comic hasn’t been swiped as it had been with the reholder scandal, they won’t be regrading it.

Since this whole cgc scam of the reholdering they are taking a closer look at books and I believe that was the reason it got up graded. Happened to me, unfortunately, right after the CGC reholdering scam. Bought a Spider-Man 2099 CBCS 9.9 off heritage for a great price at $600, sent it in for reholder service and they told me they noticed the book should have been a 9.6, they pressed it and got it to a 9.8. I was livid, threw it all over and couple community YTers ran stories on it. CBCS finally called me back and refunded me the $600. They should have called me and asked me what I wanted to do, before deciding to crack it and press my book. I think this should also apply across the board, call the owner and ask them what they want to do is the right way to go about it. Of course happened to me during a time when they decided to have more scrutiny about reholder process. Now I will never send for reholder service.

9.9 and 10 should totally always be a thing, a 9.8 is not a 10 even though it was treated that way for a very long time but a 9.8 is not a 10. The issue is with the graders and the company policies. If the shadow thing was the ONLY bad thing about the book then it should still be a 9.9, how many "bad things" does a book need to have per points? The company ceo says a book can have 2 "bad things" that are not manufacturer defects and still be a 9.8... The points scale isn't the problem, the problem is consistency in CGC, them giving a fuck and training their graders properly.

    • @DW3010
      @DW3010 14 днів тому

@@RACALDERONR and therein lies the problem. For years a 9.8 was the highest standard. Now they’re going to decide a 9.9 and 10 is a thing.
But do you want to risk sending in a 9.8 from seven years ago?
If it’s been sitting on display or whatever for those seven years, if you send them in, it should come back at 10. But as you said with consistency, it could come back the same grade or lower.

@@DW3010 Exactly. I've been thinking about the serious collectors who put together collections for the CGC registry, when 9.8 was the top grade. They spent thousands of dollars, not to mention time on expensive books with the understanding that 9.8 was the cream of the crop. Now flash forward to today, where Matt Nelson admits that in the past, "they weren't really looking for 9,9s, there could be some out there in 9.8 cases" Many registry collections could be upended over time by these new grading standards.

    This is NOTHING NEW.
CGC DO NOT Gaurantee any grade once the book has left thier facilities.
Its in thier T&Cs. Has ALWAYS been in thier T&Cs.
CGC release a new case and the OCD/completists NOW NEED all the run in the new case. So we now have the reverse of CPR.
CGC is a sham. Its stanglehold on the hobby has only been due to a PERCIEVED greater value on the secondary market.
We even had folk buying other grading companies books, cracking them and getting a better CGC grade.
    And as for the 9.9s
If any 9.8 comes back as a 9.9
    Then it was ALWAYS 9.9
So CGC DELIBERATELY undergraded the book because THEY would only give a 9.8 at thextime of submission.
But now that the world and hobby is in the crapper, low and behold.... CGC will now grade to the full scale.
And make you pay again to have your 9.9 thats graded as a 9.8 have its proper grade.
SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM
its a shite company. Always has been a shite company, and now that CGC is largely owned by an investment company.
All they'll want is MORE money for the shareholders.
So if you think they were bad before. Well your in for a shock.
And lets not start on all the thefts from CGC and the back street reholdering & replacing of books. Hi mark jewelers.
Im a collector of 50 0dd years, have been warning of implosion of cased graded books for years. Its still looming in the background. I believe that whats already in the public domain is only the rip of the iceberg.
Lastly. CGCs flup/flop over signatures. They would never grade my books, we dont authenticate, we'll write unknown writing on your banner.
Devalue my book, not in a monetarily sence, but a devaluation of me. My decades of attending comic cons. Chatting to artists & writers. Having these heros. Yes, i said heros, sit and chat and draw something. FOR YOU. Sign your books. Memories that can never be replaced.
But CGC.... if we can't have it signed here it aint no signature. Oh and give us another $100 for the privilege of never seeing the creator.
Oh and by the way. We fcyked ya book up but aint taking no blame. Check our T&Cs you moron.
