      Hi! Nice video, but...
      You know where I can get a mSATA to IDE 2,5" (with case) adapter?
      I have an old laptop that I want to update and I bought an adapter, but it seems it doesn't works... :'(

    I watch your every video Eli and this was the best episode you've done in some time. It was the right mix of a new toy (well not so new) Some good info for other tutors on youtube and an excellent life lesson. This episode had a real feeling of you giving to your viewers. It was a real life lesson that you definitely will not get in school. This was definitely 'real world' advice and nothing to do with learning Active Directory... good job. Oh... and thanks for answering my question... PipPip...Jimdandy

    Hey Eli, thanks for the intro to mSATA. I especially like the parts where you talk about practical applications for the mSATA in a small business.

    I've got a 128GB half-size mSATA in my laptop and I'm loving it. It did have a premium price tag of 100€ +30€ import fee in december 2014, but it let me keep my terabyte HDD. Great little device.

    Nice intro video Eli, I am CompTIA Certified, however prior to that I've know about these MSATA drives only for about 2 years and definitely are great boot devices that don't compromise your standard 2.5" drive for data / backups, etc.
    I am currently using a Samsung 256GB MSATA as my Windows boot drive in my Alienware 17 with (2) 750GB Scorpio drives for data redundancy :)

    Vacations: Absolutely true. I ended up having burnout at my last job. Realized that in my nine years there, I spent the last three or four years without taking a real vacation but once. l got back into town on my birthday. Found out my Dad was in the hospital. Spent the night with him there. He died the next morning.
    I asked for time off to take care of my Dad's estate some months later. Actually, I asked to take one week off work, three months from the date I asked, and I was told, "No.". That put me under even more stress and I couldn't figure out what to do...
    Well, I knew what to do -- quit that damned job -- but I was advised by others it would be a bad idea. In my youth, I would have gone to my desk, typed up my resignation, printed it out, taken it to the branch manager's office, and went home. Or put the resignation and the leave of absence request on the Branch Manager's desk and told him to pick one, either way I wouldn't be there at the end of January. I realize now I should have simply taken a leave of absence as soon as my Dad died, not quit, not asked for leave, not asked for permission at all, just left and they would see me when they saw me.
    Turned out I ended up getting sick from all the stress of being there. Actually, I realized in hindsight, while dealing with my illness, that I had been sick all along, for years, but just kept my nose to the grindstone, focused on job at hand, with blinders on, and kept going to work every day -- if I was able to put one foot in front of the other, that meant I was fine. I ignored the headaches, the back pain, the ocassional dizziness, all of it. There was a sort of ordinary, everyday level of feeling like $#!+ that just became my sense of _'normal'_ -- because I was stupid. I had convinced myself that I needed that job.
    The first hint that something was wrong was maybe five years earlier. I took vacation time, about two weeks, so I could drive to my Family Reunion ~1,900 miles away. It took me five days off work, at home resting , before I finally unwound, and felt rested enough to begin the trip.do. Something I had budgeted one day of rest to do.
    I got sick when I just fell over one day. I took two weeks off. The doctors couldn't find a problem, beyond high blood pressure . I went back to work. Felt weak, nearly fell over again after three days. Took another two weeks off. Felt 'fine'. Went back to work. Lasted three months. Got sick again. Took another month off. Thought I was fine. Went back to work. Managed to make it six weeks. Got sick again. Decided not to go back until I was better.
    Six weeks went by before I realized in a moment of clarity long in coming: The problem was not that I kept going back to work 'too soon', before I was 'ready'. The problem was that I went back to that place... at all. So I never went back. I immediately felt better the moment I made that decision. It was a real relief to remove that burden. I was finally able to take a full, deep breath -- something I had not done for years.
    Vacations are necessary to gain a sense of renewal and view your life from a different perspective.

    ur so l8 eli, been on msata for 1.5 years, but i do agree, the lack of proliferation upsets me, its the coolest form factor and almost noone except lenovo takes it seriously, and now they are acting like m.2 is replacing it, m.2 and ngff is so complicated

    Another pritty cool usage is on laptops.
    You can have for example a 128GB mSATA SSD drive for the OS and the apps and a 1TB HD for the data.
    Ussing a standard SSD you could only have one unit, unless you use a 2.5" DVD Caddy obiusly but most of the laptops from today don't come with these drives.

    Besides the fact they have adapters to normal SATA, you can literally shove it into anything you want, for a price. In this case, you can buy an adapter for around 10~30 dollars and probably a little more. I've even seen a usb sound card... Technology has an adapter for almost anything. I made the bad choice or buying one of these things without looking into it, but I'm planning on buying an adapter for it (2.5 inch drive) so I can store it behind my motherboard in my pc and use my SATA 6 gbps.

    mSATA was nice, but how it is obsolete. M.2 is the new mSATA. It supports both SATA 3.0 protocol and PCI-E protocol for speeds up to 1000 MB/s.

    U should've started by comparing the mSATA SSD cards to the old WiFi cards in older laptops. They're the same size and shape and easily confused with one another.
    NOTE: People don't try and put an mSATA into those older laptop WiFi cards slots, it will not work (BIOS not supported) and could end up messing up the mSATA card for good... Laptop much have mSATA specific slot only...

    • @TheRedRaven_
      @TheRedRaven_ 9 років тому

      Eli the Computer Guy That's the thing, reviews have been fraudulent for some time now. I don't feel like checking everyone's profile to see if they're a legit reviewer. That's why i commented here.

    • @elithecomputerguy
      @elithecomputerguy  9 років тому +2

      TheRedRaven The issue is basically all of the enclosures are of the same quality.
      If you just need a way to pull the data off you can look at this by Inateck: www.amazon.com/Inateck-Universal-Converter-Adapter-Optical/dp/B00MLYV5XY
      Inateck used to send me a lot of gear to demo and it is really good stuff.

    • @TheRedRaven_
      @TheRedRaven_ 9 років тому

      Eli the Computer Guy Thanks bud. Yeah I was looking just for an enclosure. I have a IDE/SATA cable already. It's just that I have hard drives lying around collecting dust.
      Edit: I heard some people talking about overheating issues in the enclosure, is that just hogwash or is it true?

    • @elithecomputerguy
      @elithecomputerguy  9 років тому +2

      TheRedRaven true enough that I can;t say it doesn't happen, but I wouldn't be overly worried about it. Basically any drive I put in an enclosure I figure is just for backups or low use. If I'm really going to hammer an external drive I'd just buy one from Western Digital.
      If you had a 3.5 drive I'd suggest you look at these: www.icydock.com/goods.php?id=147
      They sent me a couple to demo and they are great, BUT their for 3.5 inch drives.

    We have deployed NUC's all over my company. We also use the VESA mount and put them on the back of 24 inch monitors. They work great and are very inexpensive. If you use Windows Deployment Services and volume licenses for windows then your set.

    I'd rather have a longer video when someone is demonstrating something, or teaching something. Its far easier to watch in 1 video rather than trying to find the rest of the videos in the series.
    Being certified in computer stuff doesn't mean anything in the real world. Anyone can go online and take tests and print a certificate...the real test is can you do it in the real world. This is what I find a lot. XX person comes in says they are certified in this that and the other and you put them to work, at the end of the day you find they don't know shit. Pieces of paper don't mean anything.
