My father loved Prince Valiant by Hal Foster so I grew up reading them every Sunday. He lost interest when Hal Foster died feeling no one could compare. I am so glad you are bringing this to a new generation. Hal Foster's work was really far beyond any other comic strip.
Prince Valiant is so enjoyable. I picked up all of the Hal Foster written and drawn volumes from Fantagraphics. It's incredible that one man could come up with so many incredible images and compelling stories over so many years. Thanks for putting a spotlight on arguably the greatest adventure comic strip ever.
My pleasure Michael, I'm certainly intending to continue getting these beautiful editions from Fantagraphics. I'm enjoying showing them to friends. They can't believe how fantastic they are.
Jules . This is brilliant, the attention to detail in the art. I came in to Prince Val quite late via comic book, loved it and the use of a words below, rather than the usual word balloons . Yes, the stories are great. Cool Bradbury referance story. I am a huge Bradbury fan,and have some of the comics with his stories .I keep comming back to the artwork. Clear, detailed . Easy to read . Thanks so,so much for the show and tell .
Beautiful art and work. When I was a kid in the 1960’s I would read VALIANT new each week in the Sunday Chicago Tribune. Do you know if that was still Foster doing the strip then?
My first exposure to Prince Valiant was the role-playing game written by Greg Stafford and published by Chaosium in 1989. It used panels from the original strips as illustrations, so I made sure to get the Kickstarter reprint of the game as a nice hardback edition.
I can only agree with you in everything you say about this epic story and the incredible pen and inks from Hal Foster. The Fantagraphics edition has set a standard, which will be hard to beat. I started buying them about ten years ago and I haven't stopped. Now well into John Cullen Murphys version, which makes it a total of 28 volumes (vol. 29 coming out this Feb.). Thanks for a great share!
My only experience with Prince Valiant is the 90s cartoon, which I highly recommend. It's tremendous with some pretty hard hitting stories. More so than I'd expect for a kids show. I can't comment on it's accuracy to the source material but it's pretty amazing and the theme tune is tremendous.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing that my friend. I think I know those 70's editions you've now inherited. They are great too. Jealous of your Marx castle 🙂
I'm reading these now. Chicago Public Library has the first 11 albums and they're incredible, i don't know how i missed out on this for so long. I'm pllanning to buy Foster's entire run if i can find it
My dad was 12 when Val first came out. He was a fan then and always had a great appreciation for Foster's work, which he passed on to me. The quality was evident. There was nothing comparable in the 'strips'. I bought him earlier, oversized full color editions, in the 70's, which I have inherited. I have collected related Valiant as I have found it, including the Marx castle playset and tin lith sheath and dagger, etc.. Nice Bradbury reference. Thanks for sharing, Jules!

I'll do my best to spread the word, these comics are truly fantastic.
Foster’s was a complete package. Amazing story, with outstanding art. Modern comic creators should study these amazing strips.
Absolutely. Certainly the artists of the fifties and sixties held Foster in high esteem.

He did continue into the sixties Glen.
Myself as well.

Wow, I've not heard of a Valiant RPG but I can see that working🙂

Wow, 29 volumes, I have quite a way to go. Thanks for the comment, I'm sure I will continue reading these for many years to come.

Haha the greatest strip is Garfield hands down. Nothing comes close.
I enjoy Garfield but I don't think it's at this level!
