There's combat involving melee weapons and there's i-frames. There's also a healing resource you can get more of if you reach a checkpoint. Apparently that's enough for it to be Souls-like and not just an "Action RPG" or a "Metroidvania". I love Dark Souls, but it didn't invent anything, actually.
Alright, Egg, listen up. - Ice Grenades. Best shit. Also the 175% damage to burning enemies is actually 175% damage to frozen enemies. - Rollbois. It doesn't have a cooldown and can get you out of trouble at almost any situtation. EVEN THE BOSS JUMPING ATTACK OH BOY WHO KNEW - The healing potion restores a percentage of your health instead of a flat amount, so don't underestimate health upgrades, especially with high strength. At lower levels you can just keep attacking and restoring health almost as fast as it depletes. - The Toxic Sewers can also get you to the Ramparts, but you can get a shitload of more items, upgrades and stuff down there than at the Promenade, as long as you got the skill to go through there. - Run near every single wall, because the runes ("secrets") on the wall start glowing when you get close. You can get about + 1000-2000 gold at the first floor just from the secrets alone, and even more at later levels. After the boss, you can get even scrolls from secrets. - Throwing knives have autoaim, so jump over the enemy and spam those mothercuckers, especially piercing ones are awesome. - Don't ever take the flammable sword or whatever that was, it's bugged so it doesn't do any extra damage to flaming enemies or when you set enemies on fire. - The Damage booster stacks really hard with upgrades, so you don't really need to drop it until really later on if you don't want to.
You can actually get scrolls from the ossuary path from secrets (I don't recall whether I was actually in the ossuary or in the prison, but I do recall getting a strength scroll and being surprised when I did during a run). While damage booster is good, its better to drop it for good CC items such as Ice grenades/Flashbangs/Ivy grenades that don't require skill points to be good. This lets you pump everything into Strength which is overall more useful than the damage buffer, which has a startup that can screw you occasionally as well as not being active 100% of the time.
Now that you mention it, I remember NL got it once but lost it when he died in the sewers. He never went back after that so I s'pose that would be the reason why he doesn't have it.
Im just want to share this important moment with my fellow egg watchers. Ryab has indeed used a teleporter and I feel like we need to celebrate this occasion.
NL, Defence Breach happens because a shield can only block X amount of damage. If your damage output is high enough, you can actually breach the shield charger dudes' defenses, too.
NL, Do note that you can smash the doors with items behind if you don't have the money. The only downside is that you'll be cursed if you break the door down. (have to kill 10 enemies or die if you take damage)
Considering those challenges are one hit takes you out it wouldn't be hard for the devs to make it so it takes you out without damaging you so there's no downside.
I definitely agree that he underrates it, although I will play the devil's advocate: I think his Skill stat wasn't high enough and/or he didn't have a ranged weapon like the Electric Whip or Throwing Knife to make the best use of it. It also didn't have a stat increase on it.
I really think he SHOULD be throwing it away. Even if it would be like THE best skill in the game, I would still throw it away like whenever I could, because it's just such a freaking boring skill. You just use it whenever it's off cooldown and forget about it during a fight. Add to that that NL pretty much gets it like every run and if he were to just keep on using only the best stuff, he would pretty much have only a single skill slot, because the freaking damage buffer would just almost permanently occupy that other slot, being its' usual boring self. TL;DR: Yo, fuck damage buffer, it ain't got enough ZANE for our egg daddy.
Karsh I would agree with tat, but he can't even kill the first boss. Once he's finished the game, I'm happy for him to be as zany as he wants. But while he's still trying to beat it, unless he has something else that's a really good/fun synergy, I would want him to just take the best things he can.
From what I can tell, the damage shown on the shield is how much it can block to a degree. So to not get your defense breached you need to have more strength to up the damage block power of the shield. I could be wrong but that is what I've noticed from playing the game.
unlock magnet grenade its super useful especially when out of health flask and need to stay away. also dont know if you noticed but enemies behind doors get stunned when you break them. most importantly ammo is physical meaning that the get stuck in enemies or lay on ground until you either recollect them by killing the enemy that they are stuck in or go far enough away that they have to come back.
NL, I don't see anyone telling you this but upgrades are exponential, not linear. Thus it is much more effective to stack one than to go for balanced, say taking health and damage 5 but skills 1.
My educated guess is that defense breach happens when your strength level is lower than the level of the enemies. Shields are in the weapon/secondary weapon slot, so they r affected by strength.
I beat the boss last night. Had really high strength and 199 hp. Bloodsword/double phasers. Just tp behind the boss when he's vulnerable and smack him, then when he turns to smack you, tp behind him again and smack, then roll away. GG
Magnetic grenade will give you your ammo back and prevent the boss from walking towards you. It also synergizes well with meat grinder. Also you should probably just unlock the item so you can come across it in a normal game. Unlock cheesing is a noob strat, literally. But mad respect for the patience in that boss fight even though the obvious play was to pit that melee weapon into the heart of the incomplete one's heart
The Egg still doesn't have some of the fundamentals down. For one, he still doesn't know he can crouch to dodged certain projectiles (which is very useful if it's a bow vs bow situation). Another thing is that he doesn't dodge in mid air often/on purpose.
Holy shit he did it e: Defense breached means the attack dealt more damage than the damage rating on the shield. It still blocks all damage but you get stunned for a bit. You are overestimating the impact of item levels. The only thing a higher level on an item does is a +10% bonus to damage and a higher chance of spawning with decent modifierts. Slightly higher damage is not worth giving up a good modifier or a decent moveset. I would not ever swap a high tier low level weapon for a low tier high level weapon, unless maybe if the higher level weapon had a stat upgrade on it. Similar deal with skills. Also, this is probably personal preference, but I find that the phaser is trash. Rolling also gets you behind the enemy and the ability slot is IMO much better spent on a disable (preferably the ice grenade) or a damage buffer, or even something that can deal decent damage on its own like a damage grenade or a knife storm or something like that. That the benefit from skill stat upgrades is very marginal on the phaser doesn't help.
Imma let you finish but good info on that defense breach but bad info for that phaser. Once NL gets Rapier you can go full damage and use a Roll-Phaser-Rapier to instantly crit AND deal 150% damage for basically oneshots on basic enemies. I do like my grenades for flying enemies (I haven't unlocked knife storm yet)
So the shield thing... Was that a high level shield? If so, what is even the darn point of shields at all? Seems like after a while, shields just become useless, so they might as well not have bothered to put them into the game at all...?
Shields scale of the strength stat like weapons do, he was underleveled. They are still pretty bad though with only some utility on the ossuary path against slashers or the first boss.
Like Pongze Lor said, phaser + Rapier is OP af. First time i beat the final boss I was using that combo to deal 10k+ dmg, with only 5 STR upgrades. Was ridonk
You can break golden doors and get the item in them for free but you get a curse, if you get hit once you die, but the curse is lifted when you kill 10 enemies. *(except the 3k gold door for the heart trinket, that one is 40 enemies).
If you've seen him fight the boss before it usually goes the same way, nearly flawless until the boss is down to 40% of his health, then NL accidentally get hit by the leap in the worst way and almost instantly killed.
You actually are totally ready to get the state rub. go into old sewers for it. it makes it so there is one more weapon or item you can access in many areas (that could potentially be amazing! ...or frost blast.) on your way to incomplete one.
You DO want to be going to the Toxic Sewers. It's a higher-level zone than the Promenade, so you get better items. Same with Old Sewers > Ramparts. In the end, you'll have better gear before the Black Bridge.
correct me if im wrong but.. that x% bonus dmg on during targets.. isn't that only the "impact" dmg from the spells themselves.. so like.. it would be the impact dmg from the fire-grenade and not the burning effect? at least thats how it feels like..
if you would prefer dps nerf with dmg taken reduced, should you just prioritise HP upgrades? it seems like getting 1 hit is a problem so maybe some anyway.
@northernlion, congratulations on finally beating the boss, but you could have cheese the shit out of the boss with bear trap + meat grinder. You can stun lock him in the meat grinder with the bear trap plus the grinder deals extra damage because of the bear trap.
Yo, on a real note, you're infinitely better at this game than me. I've been giving you crap on twitter, but you're for real getting very good at this game. I've never made it past the 1st (2nd?) floor. Lol.
Find and STICK WITH the electric whip and damage buff skill. A level 1 whip with that skill got me to the end of the game with one shotting everything :)
"Every enemy is as dumb as I am. There's just more of them"
- NL 2017
Karl Pilkington couldn't have said it better himself!
thejerg I
HOLY SHIT, 1 minute 47 seconds in and he used a teleporter...HE'S DONE IT
Nope. That`s Neck cosplaying the Egg, so it does not count.
I may have cried a little
"I need something to counter the juimp attack" You already do: It's called rolling.
Rolling in a Souls-like game? Pfft unheard of
TheBioRules how is this a souls like game
There's combat involving melee weapons and there's i-frames. There's also a healing resource you can get more of if you reach a checkpoint.
Apparently that's enough for it to be Souls-like and not just an "Action RPG" or a "Metroidvania".
I love Dark Souls, but it didn't invent anything, actually.
This game isnt a souls-like at all. It has gameplay elements inspired by souls, thats all.
NL called it "like a 2D Dark Souls" in the first episode. Close enough
"I need a counter to the boss' jumping attack" how about a dodge roll with invincibility frames?
Alright, Egg, listen up.
- Ice Grenades. Best shit. Also the 175% damage to burning enemies is actually 175% damage to frozen enemies.

he wont read it better sent to twitter

NL: "Maybe, best option is just cranking out..."
Me: Multiple Dead Cells episodes a day
NL: "As much damage as we can do."
seeing him finally roll under the boss' lunge attack actually made me tear up out of joy
*HE'S DONE IT!*
The Rapier blueprint drops from Scorpions in the Toxic Sewers and Old Sewers.
Dxpress tell him on twittwr
I don't have a Twitter account. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Now that you mention it, I remember NL got it once but lost it when he died in the sewers. He never went back after that so I s'pose that would be the reason why he doesn't have it.
Dxpress i'll do it for ya
I got it to drop in the ossuary, although I highly doubt nl sees that anytime soon considering he still doesn't have the teleport rune
unlocking the spiteful sword right before the boss fight was probably the smartest thing NL could have or even ever done.
"I need the rapier blueprint ... well we obviously don't want to go to the Toxic Sewers" - Egbert North
"I can't believe this is working"
*Immediately changes tactics and almost throws the run... again*
Im just want to share this important moment with my fellow egg watchers. Ryab has indeed used a teleporter and I feel like we need to celebrate this occasion.
please do more than one a day
its the best series since player unknown
these are my thoughts exactly its like you read my mind lol
Well then you would just get tired of it faster .-.
That wasn't the first boss.
The real dark Cells starts now.
Please don't make him quit Nick. My entertainment is not allowed to stop now.
Congratulations, NL! You've done great this episode!
Hey Egg, the 1st timed door closes at 3min 30secs into the run if you're interested in getting more money.
NL, Defence Breach happens because a shield can only block X amount of damage. If your damage output is high enough, you can actually breach the shield charger dudes' defenses, too.
Hey Im honestly thankful and happy because NL listened and started to use the teleporters.
(Insert flaw in eggs gameplay here)
He KEEPS MISSING TINTED ROCKS!
The way he handles flying enemies makes me want to tap my own nut.
TheProphet he hasn't noticed breaking doors stuns enemies. kinda useful against packed rooms. pop damage buff, slash door, go ham.
You can duck and shoot the bow
NL, Do note that you can smash the doors with items behind if you don't have the money. The only downside is that you'll be cursed if you break the door down. (have to kill 10 enemies or die if you take damage)
Egg not doing *bad*?!
-What a miracle-
Must be -hackin- his luck
I always think "Huh, that game looks pretty easy" (i.e. Isaac and Nuclear throne) then I remember NL is 100% better than me at video games.
Considering those challenges are one hit takes you out it wouldn't be hard for the devs to make it so it takes you out without damaging you so there's no downside.
the damage buffer is the highest scaling and most useful skill in the game stop throwing it away
I definitely agree that he underrates it, although I will play the devil's advocate: I think his Skill stat wasn't high enough and/or he didn't have a ranged weapon like the Electric Whip or Throwing Knife to make the best use of it. It also didn't have a stat increase on it.
Yeah Ice-bow Blood Sword doesn't really work that well with the damage buffer.
I really think he SHOULD be throwing it away. Even if it would be like THE best skill in the game, I would still throw it away like whenever I could, because it's just such a freaking boring skill. You just use it whenever it's off cooldown and forget about it during a fight.

The fuck did you just say about me punk? Prepare to be dusted
The Promenade of the Condemned > Old sewers > Black bridge is the best route imo.
It's all about that ossuary to get geared up man. But you kind of have to go to the old sewers first so...
From what I can tell, the damage shown on the shield is how much it can block to a degree. So to not get your defense breached you need to have more strength to up the damage block power of the shield. I could be wrong but that is what I've noticed from playing the game.

The moment when he relies he can shoot bows while crouching is the day I will be satisfied with the game play.
"i would rather damage done halved and damage received halved"
NL
are you feeling okay?
My god he rolled under the boss jumps, absolute madman!
This ending is like when NL wants to end the episode and play badly on purpose...
Yeah, you gotta make those episodes shorter so that you can make more of them so that you get more views and youtube $$$.
EGG CONFIRMED SELLOUT
He tried so hard and got so far, but in the end it didn't even matter
Btw NL you can break those pay to open doors but you will be cursed (lift the curse by killing 10 enemies). LIKE SO HE SEES
"The crits! The crits! But also my life."
- Northernlion, 2017.
right at the start u can go left and jump up there and go through a wall to find the blueprint for the quickbow, which is quite nice
NL, I don't see anyone telling you this but upgrades are exponential, not linear. Thus it is much more effective to stack one than to go for balanced, say taking health and damage 5 but skills 1.
26:52
The duality of NL
whip is op, you can jump and freeze in the air for a sec if you spam the attack. Basically hovering out of the range of enemies
My educated guess is that defense breach happens when your strength level is lower than the level of the enemies. Shields are in the weapon/secondary weapon slot, so they r affected by strength.

northerntransporter is the greatest dead cells player of all time
Holy shit he did it
e: Defense breached means the attack dealt more damage than the damage rating on the shield. It still blocks all damage but you get stunned for a bit.

invisibility pendant + meat grinder + horizontal turret = ultimate cheesy stealth strats
You can break golden doors and get the item in them for free but you get a curse, if you get hit once you die, but the curse is lifted when you kill 10 enemies. *(except the 3k gold door for the heart trinket, that one is 40 enemies).
Thanks for providing this piece of entertainment.
Hey NL, go left at the start (literally just after you've spawned) and jump up, roll through the wall up there and you'll find a secret.
Aww! The death orb is really cool and good, too! Good job on the boss fight though, seems like you got the hang of it!
The black bridge is way easier than people are making it out to be.
Just roll all his attacks except the wave, then stab him a bunch, simple.
no one in the history of mankind claimed black bridge was hard. Even egg understands its the easiest boss in existence, he's just too bad to beat him.
Egg is bad at a videogame!? NO WAY!
I thought passing tinted rocks was an expert strategy that only egg knew.
Pro tip: You can crouch and shoot.
Not like he needs it if he can't beat the boss though ;)
Edit: oh dang I take back my word. Well played NL
Someday when he learns to throw skills into areas before entering them and or from chains...HE WILL RISE!!
Oh boy, this Flinthook gameplay is looking pretty sweet.
You DO want to be going to the Toxic Sewers. It's a higher-level zone than the Promenade, so you get better items. Same with Old Sewers > Ramparts. In the end, you'll have better gear before the Black Bridge.
We've been waiting egg
I beat a secret area yesterday. Tips are to go ranged, go slow, and dodge like hell.
hey NL, remember that you can duck, even when you're attacking. If you're gonna use the bow, you'll have done it!
Damage is almost always better than HP. It works like HP by making you kill things so fast they can't hit you.
Love this game!
correct me if im wrong but.. that x% bonus dmg on during targets.. isn't that only the "impact" dmg from the spells themselves.. so like.. it would be the impact dmg from the fire-grenade and not the burning effect? at least thats how it feels like..
You can fire arrows while crouching
"I am dying to burst damage from the boss"
Drops the bear trap that gives him a health upgrade. >.< come on NL
im so happy you finally killed the first boss. good job egg
Elite enemies teleport only after you get them to half health and they explode.
Nl finally stopped jumping into the jump attack. Has he done it?
26:55 YASHHHHH
The heck's a rampert?
if you would prefer dps nerf with dmg taken reduced, should you just prioritise HP upgrades?
it seems like getting 1 hit is a problem so maybe some anyway.
Loving the series!!!!
HE'S DONE IT. THE EGG HAS BEATEN THE BOSS
@northernlion, congratulations on finally beating the boss, but you could have cheese the shit out of the boss with bear trap + meat grinder. You can stun lock him in the meat grinder with the bear trap plus the grinder deals extra damage because of the bear trap.
You can roll under the jump attack.
meat grinder and turret are the best skill combo imo
He did it!!!! Finally!!!!
Question. Because this boss is the Incomplete one. is there a complete version?
Is nl going to play Caveblazers? Would like to see him play it
NL, if you don't have enough strength, your defense will get breached when you block.
Ramperts lol
NL, please finish exploring the ramparts once in your life. The level does not end when the boss room is found, there is plenty more to check out.
"Eh I don't think knife storm is that good"
*two minutes later*
"herp i will just kill all of these flying enemies with a bear trap"
Can we please get 2 uploads of Dead Cells a day?
Trippin' off the beat kinda
Drippin' off the meat grinder.
You know, you can shoot the bow while crouched. normal height arrows go over you.
Yo, on a real note, you're infinitely better at this game than me. I've been giving you crap on twitter, but you're for real getting very good at this game. I've never made it past the 1st (2nd?) floor. Lol.
this boss is actually pretty is,especially with the sword, which gives you crit when you get hit(forgot the name)
NL QUOTED IN THE END 3 TIMES IN 9 EPISODES THE EGG IS GOING BAD
Find and STICK WITH the electric whip and damage buff skill. A level 1 whip with that skill got me to the end of the game with one shotting everything :)
defense breach i assume is from it not being high enough lvl
Missed a wall carrot.
But like, actual congrats, dude.
Really should do Promenade then go to Old Sewers for the 2nd Elite who gives the teleport ability.
NL, go to the left of when you spawn and climb up.
Nl i think the cooldown reduction is broken it doesn't really affect you
I legitimately felt elated when he defeated the boss.
Any bets on how long it'll be before he figures out you can shoot bows while crouching?
does anyone else queue up a video of his and then do a run at the same time?
*HES DONE IT*
need to be taking the shield. it makes the boss a piece of cake. specially if you manage to find a blood shield
