Thank you so much, Professor of Violin Julia Bushkova! We are so grateful that you share your knowlegde and wisdom with us all. You change the lives of many violinists from all over the world, who would otherwise not have access to this high level of teaching.
This explanation is excellent, Can t be better. It is so helpful!!! Once again, Madame Bushkova, thank you so very much for your time and for sharing your expertise which means quite a lot to all of us❤❤❤
I have a violin teacher who is great but your explanations equally help me to improve. When I have a problem, I look at your videos because I always find an explanation I understand and that helps me grow. You are an amazing professor!

I need this so much! Thank you for your great tips! After playing (as an amateur) for years, I have developed very bad habits, as far as bowing goes! I will study this over and over.
Excellent. No matter what she teaches. She is the greatest! Everythng is so much useful. I m catching up with the violin after 30 years... Prof Bushkova, you are a great pedagogue. I follow all your teaching. The only thing I haven t done yet, is putting rice inside the violin! 😄 But I will, I promise! Best wishes from Uruguay.
I’m amazed at how short, concise and incredibly helpful your videos are to a beginner! I’ve been watching so many videos and I always end up here if I want to get it right!
This video provides the most fundamental techniques of right arm movement while bowing. I was struggling to keep the bow straight since a long time and this video helped me immensely. Thank you so much!
What a marvelously knowledgeable and confident instructor and guide. However Madam Bushkova, mirrors are not as kind to some of us as they would be to such a sublime beauty as yourself. For we aesthetically challenged mortals, i suggest a wavy glass door. Thankyou maestra!
Thank you, prof. Bushkova! You've become my favorite online violin teacher. You bring a heightened level of detail to every aspect of violin playing but are always able to explain it such that it makes perfect sense.
omg thank you so much, my finger on my left arm is broken at the moment, and I'm trying to fix my bow pulling, thank you so much for this lesson, it really help so much!!!
I stumbled upon this video about an hour ago and this helped me SO much! I’ve done so many exercises for my bow but nothing has seemed to work. I moved my arm in the steps you showed in the video a few times and my bow got much straighter and I feel more comfortable bowing now.
Thanks! I found the mirror monitoring approach to really help me. I could see the arc (or circle plane) that the bow must be circled the violin as it goes across all strings (seeing where my fist was in front of me particularly). The second thing I discovered even though I figured out how to get the bow more or less straight I found that I found that the bow angled off slightly bowing from the frog to the tip at the tip of the bow. With the mirror by experiment I found that if I could correct this slight movement with my wristh. The secondary effect was to keep my bow from drifting from the bridge to the fingerboard and vice versa. I probably have a few more months of monitoring to get this down perfectly but I am ON MY WAY!
Dearest Julia, my daughter watches your videos, she loves them and is learning a lot this summer since she doesn't go to conservatory again until September. Your explanation are do good, so traight to the point. Actually we found you when we were looking for which violin to buy. Her 4/4, so your video about how to choose a violin and the other one about the bow came in very handy and right at the perfect moment. So thank you again! Big hug from Spain!!!
Thanks so much, I need to really work on these body mechanics because when I play the angles of my bow keep changing instead of staying parallel to the bridge. You’re such a great teacher. Thanks for recording this video.
You always release the new videos around midnight on Saturday night (California time zone) - but you’re supposed to live in Texas ? 😀 anyway, it works for me...I live in California. Thanks again teacher for another great lesson ! At some point, you’d have a lot of students around the world, whose owe you some great favors - smart...😃
Thank you so much, my bow gots straight right after I applied the technique🥺 I used to think that my bow is straight because I look at it on my angle... the tips are easy and very helpful
Wonderfully enlightening! Thank you so much. My arm sometimes feels too short, and when I reach the tip of the bow, the tip of the bow won't stay parallel to the bridge. What can I do when this happens, so that my bow will stay straight all the way to the tip of the bow?
If your arm is too short, the "tip" of your bow should not be the real tip, but much lower. By "much," I mean and inch or maybe even close to two inches lower from where you currently try to play. If your bow is quite heavy (over 62 grams), you can also change the place where you hold the bow -- move your hand to the thumb grip (rather than stay at the very frog). This way, you would use more of the tip without straining. Either one is a good choice.
Biomechanics of the the right arm for violin. Watching an amazing athlete is often described as poetry in motion. If I had originated this method I will call it Pushkin poses for the bowing arm. Sorry, that was pathetically cliche. Great lesson!
Very helpful video, thank you so much. Could you please also explain why exactly it is important to have the bow parallel to the bridge, as that seems to be taken as a given but the rationale is not spelled out. Presumably it is about ensuring a consistent sound point throughout the bow? On a different subject, some people also talk about thinking of a circular motion, including at the tip when you change from down bow to up bow. Is that a useful concept once you have the parallel motion well drilled?
Thanks professor I have a miror but my position was not clear in front My elbow was too high My wrist is often not reactive ( especially with stress of audition in public) The final step moving the shoulder slightly forward I do very well to correct at the end the parallelism and the wrist angle “as if I would open a door in front of me” A professor found that my index finger on the bow was too straight and blocked my wrist ( when stressed i think to relax my index). To reach the spike of the bow this professor let me begin by the spike and opening the shoulder with forearm a bit behind and “giving weight” to the bow. That seems paradoxal to have the shoulder forwards “opening the door” and the forarm stretched behind to reach the extreme spike..everyday I’m doing sevcik exercise in front of a large mirror on the wall of my Versailles palace ;-)
Never play with straight bow unless your arms are very long! No great old master blocked the upper arm movement. If you force the bow to go straight you will stop the upper arm movement. Upper arm movement needs to finish it’s movement to the end (to the tip of the bow) even at the moment when lower arm opens up, (both lower and upper arm need to finish the movement) otherwise the sound changes from the tip to the frug, because different muscles are being used. We want unified sound, not the sound which weakens towards the tip.
Igor, you are very right that, on the higher level of tone production ("the old masters"), the main thing is to stay at the same contact point/sounding point. People with shorter arms would not draw the bow parallel to the bridge, naturally. However, it is an introductory video to the overall motions of the upper-arm-forearm - so I call it this way. If you watched it, you know that I am talking about the same things as you wrote in your comments (both lower and upper arm need to finish the movement, etc.) Nice to hear from you and thank you!
Oh my god this is the exact thing I that was ruining my practice. The bow does not look straight when you're looking at it while playing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes this is true! The angle looks very different (not straight, yet correct) when you look down your violin.
This has been very helpful to me - thank you very much! keep-up these nice videos !!!
This video was really helpfull!! Thank you!
Thank you so much!
Indeed very helpful! Thanks for sharing these tips :)
Thank you teacher 😍
Thanks, for confirming I was right that my wrist is the problem for me not playing straight bow
great techniques thank you

Muy instructivo, podría ser en castellano? Gracias
This is so helpful to me, a beginner. I struggle with bow placement every time I practice. I will use your video as a guide every day to help me.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. Do you have workshops for mature players beginners intermediate?
Unfortunately, there is no time for you me to do those. Thanks for your comments and for your obvious interest in learning the violin.
She is the Professor of Professors Of Violin . They go to her to learn.
A straight bow is violinistic elegance .
Violinmaking Bents Space
Thank you very much! But my height is 1.82m and my arm is longer than the bow, so how could this technic be adaptable for people with long arm?
Lucky you - you can work so much less and get the same result!
How many times should one practice this exercise on each string?
it is up to you. Set the number to accomplish your goal. (but no more than 10x)
@@ViolinClassUSA thank you for your time. It's appreciated.
am i the only one who thinks this woman is gorgeous?
How did they do it whenever there wasn’t any mirrors???
You can just look at the bow and get it that way.
Ma'am, how long should i use the strings? Should they be replaced frequently? 😊
You’d replace the strings when you start hearing bad sounds, if you don’t notice anything different, why bother - save your money...
It depends on how much you play every day and what kinds of strings you use.
Never play with straight bow unless your arms are very long!
