Have you tried removing the claws by inserting a knife or the point of a crab claw itself into the white membrane at the lower joint. Works very well, does little if any harm to the crab and is in fact the natural way the crab can release the claw when threatened. Great video as always!

Hey guys. Great to see you making videos now. I know one of you vacationed in my hometown of Va Beach, Va. Great offshore fishing here especially during White Marlin season. Stone Crabs are my favorite and always have them when visiting my son in Florida. Use to go to Joe’s but it’s been a while. Harvesting them yourselves awesome although a lot of work for not much return. Will be following and good luck!

Great vid stone crabs are the most delicious seafood. Yall didnt mention it in the video but to anyone trying their luck at stone crabbing you should target muddy bottom because its easiest for them to build their dens in.

Not sure if someone has addressed this but I usually order a bunch of customized dog tags with my information on it and screw it into the trap itself. Make sure they are good quality so they don’t Rust away

That's a lot of work, time, and money for a few claws.
    Looks fun nonetheless

Although, I understand the Florida laws stating you can take both claws if legal size, I would not remove both. Crabs are left defenseless when you remove both, in addition, by removing both it takes more time for the claws to grow back because the rate of growth is directly due to the amount of food they take in, meaning no claws means less food and slower growth.

I’m all for fishing and hunting in moderation of course but if you gonna take the crabs pinchers just take the whole crab you’re almost giving them a death sentence throwing them back

They actually drop claws all the time then become scavenger until their claws grow back, they drop them if they fight all the time!

Leaving a crab with no claws is lame. Don’t mistake legality for morality

    • @scottmichael3745

The scientists have determined that leaving a stone crap with one claw is actually more dangerous for the crab than leaving it with no claws! With one claw they will still fight and most likely loose (get killed) whereas if they have No claws they hide till they grow back giving it a better chance at living. Released by the department of Florida fish and game.

Scott Michael it’s funny how facts can be manipulated. I’m assuming the study you are referring to are paid for by the stone crab commercial fisherman. Multiple studies have determined claw number is directly linked to mortality. A stone crab with one or two claws has a vastly higher survival rate than no claws. This is because it can defend itself and also find food. The majority of deaths for stone crabs in the wild is from predators, not “infighting”. The diet of the stone crab includes fish, oysters, and other shell fish. When they have no claws, the majority of their main food supply is impossible to consume. So not only are stone crabs defenseless, they also have to scavenge for food which is difficult without being able to fend off their food source from other crabs. Pretty common sense if you ask me. So yes, it is immoral to leave a crab without any way to properly provide food for itself and defend itself. Also the study found the larger and older the crab, the less likely it would fully regrow before death as part of its natural life cycle. Another important point was making sure breaks are the least traumatic aka good break.
