I will not hear a bad word against Orla. She is the world's greatest living philosopher. She's just misunderstood, because the world is not yet worthy of her genius.
Derry Girls is an absolutely fantastic show, really illustrating teenage life in the 1990's- and in particular in Northern Ireland. What I find a little odd is that many reactors not from the UK seem to totally ignore the fact that the episode opens with terrorists blowing up the bridge they all need to cross to get into town, that the school bus is boarded by British soldiers looking for more bombs/ potential terrorists, and that Claire's dad is late to the parents meeting because he was delayed while the authorities defused a second actual bomb. In the second episode- Uncle Colm was tied up by terrorists wanting to steal his van potentially to transport arms or bomb making equipment across the border. The fact that all these things are happening around them on a daily basis, and yet they just carry on their normal lives is an important aspect of this series.
ahhh I love this comment! I don't always understand the political aspect of it but I love the way its written weaved into their everyday lives. It makes it feel so real!
Quick History/Context dump for the show: England colonised Ireland for over 600 years and was a very big factor/cause of An Gorta Mór (The Irish Famine) that wiped out a quarter of our population, which only recovered in the last few years! Lots of tragedies and violence committed, it’s also why the characters and Irish people in real life are speaking English (speaking Irish was persecuted and banned). We gained independence after centuries of failed attempts in 1921 but a chunk of the north remained a part of the United Kingdom. At the time the show is set, it’s in the midsts of The Troubles, a period where that chunk known as Northern Ireland was divided in a bloody civil war between paramilitaries of people who wanted to stay a part of the UK (typically Protestants called Unionists) and who wanted to rejoin Ireland (typically Catholics called Nationalists). Hatred against the English was quite a justified anger, but over the past years it’s died down to kinda just bitterness and jabs here and there. So the Irish vs English had beef, and the Catholics vs Protestants as well :) Great reaction video
Wow, I had no idea, I figured the animosity came from colonization, as it usually does, when it comes to England, but I didn't know it was that deep. I appreciate the context though. And glad you enjoyed!
This is the rare show that has a great first episode. It’s hilarious and still manages to perfectly capture the spirit of each character. Loving your reaction to this. Going to keep watching 👍🏼 ☮️ & ❤ from California
Your laughter tells me you are well suited for this show. Looking forward to your reactions. A quick search of "the troubles" will help you with context. Enjoy 😂❤
Jenny is not the ghost from Harry Potter, but I also had that thought and I have heard many reactors ask the same question! So she clearly resembles Moaning Myrtle, even if she is not (unfortunately). Also your reaction was a lot of fun!
@@jonlight670 Who is in a lot of other stuff, so @PopcornOpinions, you may run into her somewhere still. She's in the Laurel and Hardy biopic, for instance. (Also one episode of _Doctor Who.)_
Great reaction! You are going to have an absolute blast with this series. It's hilarious all the way through! The setting of following this insanely funny group of teens and their families amidst the serious backdrop of The Troubles is amazing. Also, Orla is my favourite by far! I absolutely love all the characters, but Orla for sure is at the top for me. And she is not on drugs, she's just... Well, she's just Orla, haha! xD
Orla is definitely a bit aloof and not on drugs but i assume she’s neurodivergent and just sort of living in her own world most of the time. They’re all fun characters but I definitely have a soft spot for orla and all of the shit she does in the background of various scenes. And they shit on James a lot but I just love the Irish accents and culture and banter and insults. It’s such a fun show. And taught me a bit more about the colonialism of Ireland by England.
The Troubles are all about if North Ireland should stay part of Britain or join the Republic of Ireland. The British Army comes in when a civil war starts. James being English makes him on the other side of the Irish Catholics like Michelle’s family. We meet Protestants later on in the show who would want stay part of Britain. As Erin says later it has a religious but also a political issue given older historical events like the Republic of Ireland gaining independence from Britain.
I would recommend Sinead O'Connor's song Famine ua-cam.com/video/EZIB6MslCAo/v-deo.htmlsi=Kejnsn_yziV-NN1C I am not Irish(Estonian), but love learning history. Thanks to the history teachers, who were sent to gulags in Siberia. They were such great story tellers of their own experiences it really helped to be more curious about others history. Sinead also was a very rebellious soul. She reminds me of soo many middle aged people who rebelled against USSR in the 80s in my country leading to the Singing Revolution. PS! Really enjoyed your reaction. ☺️🤣
They hate the English, and James is English -- but it's not like he personally colonized Ireland. Also, he's the only boy in their group, with no hope of finding male friends, and is stuck with them, I guess. It's not fair at all. People have a right to go to the bathroom! One of them could stand guard at the door and tell other girls to wait till he's done. I don't blame that girl for not accepting their apology, though.
go do a history lesson it is not about the colonisation of ireland on why the irish hate the british during this time. This entire show is about the troubles, the colonisation of ireland is only relevant for why the troubles was happening. Both innocent irish and british were killed during this time killing each other on mass. You didn’t have english and irish people mixing. 'a part' of is the opposite of 'apart' from. Some of NI was 'a part' of the UK but wanted to be 'apart' from it.
