How To Get Tight Tire On Bike Wheel Rim With Tire Bead Jack
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 сер 2017
- This is a cool new tool I found called a Tire Bead Jack made by Koolstop. I show how to mount a tight fitting bicycle tire onto a rim using the tool. Brand new bike tires can be really tight, and harder to mount, so this is a cool to have. Tire levers can be used, but I think this is just a bit nicer.

Important note. When fitting the tyre to the rim, the last bit of bead should be at the valve. In this video, the valve is almost opposite the last bit of bead being fitted. The valve prevents the bead from going into the deepest part of the rim called the well. That was 60 years ago. It's so much easier finishing at the valve.
Use this tool in the shop where I work. I haven't scratched any wheels yet and don't think I will.
Works great for road tires and narrow mountain tires but is a little tricky to use on wider mountain tires. In future designs it would be nice if it were wider to accommodate the added rubber.
Still, this tools has saved me a few times.
For those that say they don't need any tools I say good for you. Whatever. I've mounted probably thousands of tires and have run into some where something like this is essential.
I’m working as a rental bike mechanic…. My boss has 3000 bikes ffs ! And in two days I changed 10 punctures . We put new tubes in and a tyre liner that is phenomenally strong ( a pin 📌 won’t through it ) then in the winter we have a glue party 🎉….. the point is that at 61 after a life time of using my hands as pliers I’m done ✅ with it . After my 10 tyre in 2 days , and some were new , my hands mutinied. This winter ❄️ alone I think I did more than. 50 …. So we have ordered tyre pliers , but the kind that has a tube profile on each side of the jaws . This tool looks cool 😎 tho …. As always thanks 🙏 RJ …. I spread the word about you here in Copenhagen
That's an interesting video. You endorse the idea of using a lever to install a tire. I guess you are lucky with that or you have an exceptional technique. I've installed thousands of tires, so I can't say I always avoid using a lever, because some tires are just impossible to install without a tool. My trouble is that when I use a lever, I pinch and puncture the tube 50% of the time. Not a good risk. I find the Tire Jack reduces that to about 0%. You say it's not a must-have tool. I had tires that was so reliably difficult that I carried the Tire Jack whenever I rode that bike, so I considered it a must-have at the time.
i just pinched 2 tyres at the side of the road, so i'll get this for sure
THAT'S GREAT!!!!
The guys @ my FLBS,...scratched my rims all up, and went through several innertubes putting new tires on my fixie,......then,....charged me 4 it!
At home, I started to do it myself!
700x25c, with no scratches and no pinched tubes, using the back handle end of a spoon!
That looks like a good investment!😀
I bought this myself a few weeks back and used it for the first today to put on a set of Continental Gatorskins (notoriously difficult to put on.) Have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised by how successful this tool worked. Have to admit I'm sold on this
From struggling to fit my very tight Gator tires onto rims to two minutes to do the whole job thanks to this tool. Not only did the tool work as promised, I also avoided damaging the tube as I have done before using tire levers. This is a great product. Follow this video’s advice and work the tool slowly across the last part and it will slide on perfectly. Great product and great video.
thanks, your comment motivated me to buy one. my thumbs all messed up and I just bought gators for florida roads.
Personal success story anecdote about this tool and Gatorskin tires:
I got flats three times with an older pair of Gatorskins. Two were my own stupidity (pinch flat from using a hand pump and underinflating it, another from pulling off the presta tip with said hand pump) and each time I had to take to a bike shop to remount because I couldn't get that Kevlar bead over the rim, apparently Gatorskins are known to be tough.
I just got new Gatorskins a month ago and ran over this big piece of metal and went flat again. I decided to give this a try, not expecting much especially with a brand new tire. Literally 5 minutes and I seated the tire on easily with no pain or stress.
I can't recommend this tool enough. It's only $11-12 and unfortunately it's a bit too big to fit in a saddle bag but it is invaluable.
"Tough?" 'Tough' isn't the word: I hope I never get a flat with my Armadillos. Took me an hour-and-a-half with 3 tire levers - and I still ruined 2 brand new tubes and almost broke the levers. Never had an experience like that in my life changing bike tires!
Changing a tyre in a warm dry workshop is usually not too difficult but in my past 30 years on the road I've never had a puncture in a warm dry workshop ! Most of mine occur at night , in the pissing rain, in the most inhospitable place you could think off. I've had this tool for a couple of years now and to me it's a real game changer as i usually only carry one spare tube and the number of times I've nipped that with tyre levers is unbelievable. Despite some of the negative comments the one I have isn't too big and it fits easily into my saddle bag.
Having just pinched through several tubes trying to get a new wire bead tire on my rim, this is definitely a must have for me now. Thanks for the video demonstrating how they work! Can't wait for mine to arrive now!
It's a great tool. I have some tyre / race wheel combinations that are impossible even with massive metal levers. So this tool makes it easy and avoids pinching the tube
Just make sure that if you need it to get the tyre on that you can get that tyre off in the middle of no where...
I got one of these yesterday and it is a revelation, I run Continetal Gatorskins on Mavic Allroad rims and I'm sick of skinning my knucles / nipping tubes etc. I've even managed to snap 2 Parktool tyre levers trying to get these tyres on....however, with this it is as easy as pie. I'm carrying this with me from now on. It IS alot bigger than a couple of tyre levers but the time saved when you are commuting and stuck in the rain trying to wrestle a tyre on makes it SOOOO worthwhile. 10/10 would recommend
i just ordered one of these, i had MAJOR trouble installing my Panaracer Gravel King 700x32c tires. I got a flat and took it to the shop to have them put it back on. They struggled for a min, grabbed the tire jack, and had it on in 2min flat. for me this is a MUST HAVE.
For someone who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, like me, these are a game changer
I use this and it works a treat with tight wire bead tires. Especially new ones.
Works great, on tubeless rims. Most new road rims are tubeless ready. Have not pinched a tube yet. I carry one on group rides. Used it last weekend.
Having encountered a few "difficult" racing profile tires in the past prompted me to order myself one of these. Still slightly skeptical I approached the initial time I used it with a desire to give it a fair chance. To my amazement the engineered-in physics this tool embodies the tire went on quite smoothly without any undue leveraging of the tire which wasn't always true in the past. You may not require it often, but when you do RJ is on the money as to it's being of good design and with proper care shouldn't scratch your wheels. The material is what I believe used to be described as Tuff Stuff used to make virtually indestructible toys. Great video and it should be used by their company as a guide on how to best use their product.
Never had a problem mounting tires except for Schwalbe tubeless tires which are very tight to mount. I got them on with judicious use of levers and help from a friend's second set of hands. I've seen several videos showing them go on no prob, but not for me.This tool is perfect for that. Thanks RJTBG!
I had some older Bontrager rims and Continental tires there were near impossible to mount ... I broke two levers and two tubes trying. This tool made it possible.
Great video - the Koolstop is great for those of us trying to install tubeless road tires on wide wheels - and/or with weak fingers.
As you said, not not an essential tool to own, but I agree it is a great and relatively inexpensive tool to have available as it makes fitting even a tight new tire so very simple!
very cool tool, I've pinched a lot of tubes. Will look into this. Kudos to some guy or gal sitting around who came up with this, and you too for bringing to YT.
Nice job. Quick & effective presentation. I just got my Koolstop.
I have one, but forgot how to operate it, since I haven't used it yet. Thanks for the video to show me how it's used!
I'm going to get one because of Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres. They are so tight and stiff walled to get back on.
I've had one of these tools for a couple of years and they are brilliant. I use large Marathon plus tyres on my touring bike and this tool stops me wrecking my thumps getting the last bit of bead on. Only down side is it won't fit really big tyres
I *love* working on bikes but have small and not very strong hands (previous injury of one and a bit of arthritis in both). I've encountered one or two bike tires and one wheelchair tire that had me hurting after a while. I can imagine this would have cut down on my work time as well as pain endured. So, $13 is a small price to pay and I'm happy to do it. Thanks for the lead!
Thanks for the demo! Much easier to see how it works rather than reading about it.
Nifty tool. I have a bike with a rim/tire combination that I have to use some dish soap as lubricant to help get the tire on by hand. This tool looks like it will be helpful on the workbench. However, this tool is a bit too bulky to carry for roadside flats, so I will still have to carry a little vial of dish soap in my saddle bag.
I've got one of these built by a Taiwanese company called Bike Hand. The design is slightly different, as it's more of a scissors mechanism, but with the same slotted and hooked ends on each of the arms. It's very useful for mounting tight tires such as Continental road bike tires and 20" BMX/folding bike tires.
I bought mine while vacationing in Shinjuku in Tokyo. It's not available in my home country so it's a rather rare tool here.
Definitely a must have tool. Not all tyres slip on easily and it saves your thumbs and pinched punctures.
A great tool for all bike shops and those with hand issues such as arthritis. It will pay for itself with one visit to the bike shop.
Totally cool tool. If anyone has a new tire on a new rim, this tool could save you a nightmare of a time.
Check out VAR tyre levers. They work the same way but they're smaller so you can fit them in your saddle bag.
I've had mine for a while. Works great
cool tool,i have cheap tires levers from a patch kit i got at walmart years ago,i keep 2 of em in the tool bag under the seat "just in case" the newer components i have on the bike i got from amazon, love amazon!
Have mounted a few sets of Gatorskins with a standard lever this tool looks good I'd give it a try but agree that it doesn't fit the must have category. Good video as always.
Exactly what i was searching for. Thanks!
Pretty kool. I know my 80's road bike different makes/models/sizes of tires can vary from no effort easy-peasy to so tight that tire lever barely help's (current Conti's where easy-peasy, but the last set - also Conti's - was beyond ridiculous to get on as well as being just as big of a PIA to get off).
Check out the new (as ofJan 2022) "Tyre Glider" from the UK. It make getting that last bit of tyre on a breeze.
I purchased one after my encounter with a Schwalbe 700x28 Marathon Plus tire. It was INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT to get on. I can't over state that either. For real I can't!
Same experience exactly. I love the Schwalbes except for the frustration and torture of mounting them. The tool is a little heavy to carry around, but I willingly pay the weight penalty to avoid the possibility of being on the road and not being able to remount the tire after fixing a flat.
I am not very handy. I bought Gatorhard shell, tires and it would have been impossible for me to mount them without this tool. It is great!
$11? Now in 2024 they are $17.55 from Kool Stop! Still with my arthritis I need such a tool badly, a Godsend!
had a pucnture while on the road, took me also an hour to put the 700x25 back on the wheel. this could have helped but not like i would bring this on a ride either. will make swapping tires at home much easier for sure
I bought the Kool Stop tire jack after buying a Schwalbe Marathon Plus, which I only installed after anchoring it with 7 zip ties
Fantastic! I will need this tool to install a continental Classic tire which is totally a pain!
Yeah I love this tool, some tires/rims are really a pita and this tool makes it easy.
I had to invest in one of these for tubeless clinchers as the beads are very tight
My favorite tire iron is the quick stick. I also have the pedros but the quick stick is my go to lever. It does look like another bike tool in coming to my tool box. Thanks a lot:-)
I'm allways poking holes in my new tubes. Then I have to call one of my sons to please come and help me please get my bike back on the road. This tool might help this clumsy mom stay on the bike path 👆😎😁
I get really really annoyed when I pinch the tube with a tire lever, so I'm going to get one of these. Thanks for the tip!
Nice gadget to add to my tool box, thanks for sharing
i get continental gater skins on by hand and their a super tight fit on a roadie 23c x700
Has no-one ever taught you to finish at the valve so the rest of the tyre can be seated deep into the well as much as possible!!?
Great videos though and yes I've had some tight tyres even finishing at the valve. Might even buy this tool if I can find one in UK.. Similarly to first remove tyre start levering either side of valve to get maximum slack. Best regards..
Nonsense
Truely, it doesn't matter.
SJS Cycles sell it which is where I bought man. Luckily they were able to deliver to Northern Ireland so mainland UK should be no problem
It's people like you who always find a way to make things more technical than needed. Finishing at the valve? Lol. It's actually better to start at or just before the valve to prevent damage to the valve.
Great tool *but* what is there to help with getting tight tires off wheels aside from the standard tire levers ??
In 40 years of cycling I never had a set I could not mount with bare hands or tire levers. But nowI 've got a combination of Michelin Competitions tires with Easton EC90 rims that are a bear to install without pinching the tube. i've gone as far as using WD40 to lubricate the bead. I'm debating buying this, unfortunatly it's a bit large and nosaddle bag friendly.t
Use these levers--they are absolutely the best--very thin, yet unbreakable: www.amazon.com/Schwalbe-1847-Bicycle-Tire-Levers/dp/B000UAQL6C
Very Nice tool, Thanks a lot.
On my wish list, already have the Dualco grease gun.
I have to agree with some other comments. Using a lever to get a tire on the rim is risky and I try do so only as a last resort. And my arthritis in my wrists is getting bad enough that I can't guarantee that I could get a difficult tire on using only my hands. This tool is essential if I am not to be stuck on the side of the road.
I have been curious about this tool. Just ordered it. I figure if it prevents me from ruining one tube it will pay for itself plus eliminate the aggravation.
Looks very useful. I'm gonna buy it.
So yeah, didn't need it but I just bought it because it's awesome! Thanks
Koolstop makes some pretty awesome rim brake pads, the salmon colored ones work amazingly. Cool tool, I think I'll try to make one myself just for fun. I've definitely had some tough tires in the past. Great video RJ!
Fantastic tool if you dont have enough strenght. BBB and Challenge make similar ones.
Great tool. Makes tight tires a snap.
Not bad at all. It all comes down to
How many tires you install. I wonder if something like that can be handmade.
Good tool. I needed that when I'd put a 26 inch inner tube on a 700c rim. The tyre that used to go on easily, got very difficult. I didn't want to go and buy the right inner tube. Lol
Thanks for the tip on Kool Stop.
I have this tool and it does work. You still need to make sure the tube is UP inside the tire and not still between the bead and the rim or you can still pinch the tube It has happens to me.
excellent!
It would definitely come handy when you get a flat mid ride. I hate the small tyre levers, and sometimes it takes me over 10 mins to swap a tube because of them....
I would kill to have to waste only 10 minutes to swap a tube. I never know how long it's going to take with standard levers. This mounting tool makes remounting the tire the normal process it should be.
It's a must have tool to avoid a nightmare at dusk on a mountain road with no Uber available and your stranded. get this tool if you have tight Continentals on a road bike like I have.
I have a tight tire and my wheel always has this bouncing feel, as one end of tire does not fit in the groove.
So my question is, can this tool, help to pull the tire into the rim groove properly? so that the wheel rolls smoothly.
Any response much appreciated.
Great tool! ty for showin us!
Just ordered two of them. One for me, one for the shop.
Looks like a great tool, I'm going to order one.
Can be used for work shop
You are like the Royal Jordanian of the road bikes
Crap !! another tool i need 👍🤣
Actually have been wondering how to get the super tight ones on, thanks
Good for tubeless tyres.
Nice tool I was actually doing new tires on my road Tim and broke it will try it
Will this work on 35-38 mm tires on a 700c tubeless ready rim? My EZ Clincher won't do it on anything more than a 28 mm.
That is clever tool.
What I really need this for are my fat bike tires when I mount them on my tubeless-optimized CF rims...unfortunately it won't fit over the 4" tires. So I guess I'll be back to standing on the tire...bummer.
holy. just last week a wheel kicked my ass. had I known about this before I broke 2 spokes I would have been laughing and riding around happily now.
Literaly buying one rn my tire rim mix is nearly impossible to get on I tried it by hand cuz I forgot tire levers on the trail I was there 2 hours fighting it even with levers it takes me 15-20 to get that bead over
Koolstop used to be a pro cycling team sponsor. I remember hearing their name watching TdeF. Neat tool, but not very portable for carrying on the bike.
Ralph Bowe
Fits in a pocket on my jersey.
I like it..seems to make the job easier and quicker..win,win.
Maybe I'll try mounting my Michelin pro4's on my 2012 Mavic rims. Two bike shops have spent over an hour but they couldn't get it on even with tire levers.
That is pretty kool
Very interesting tool.
Most of my rim/tire combinations, I can mount without levers. One set of custom wheels however...damn, I could have used this. Thanks.
Is this thing helpful for unsticking beads from rims? I mean, so stuck you can’t even squeeze a tire lever in?
nice tool! thanks
Kool tool.
I have a suggestion for a video: One of my Wolber wheels broke the axle inside the rim's hub. I would like to rebuild it but need to get the axle out first. I'm going to try a easy-out when I get the time but would love to see your take on this if you can duplicate the problem.
If the axle broke, it should come right out. The axle is the only thing holding the two ends in. I am assuming it's a common threaded axle with cones and lock nuts.
If you mount many tires daily then this tool would prove useful since. You would not get much faster than without it, however you'll have to use much less effort and it will be easier than with levers
What about getting the tire off? How do you use that tool for that? Thanks though for all the work creating this video!
just use levers
@@charlesmiv3842 I've always used levers but studded winter tires are made of a harder ribber and much harder to get off. Mainly I just hope they devise a tool that will do both, take the tire off and put it back on again without having to struggle with the levers. I now carry the tire jack and didn't find out it's only for putting the tires on as I assumed it was designed for both.
hi I love your videos
Handy tool for the real tight ones, got the Crank Brothers Tool Speedier Lever but it wont do the same job.
right tool for the right job, I need one for the box.
Thanks for sharing.
