  • On my video titled "What Is Speculative Evolution", one of you fine folks asked how to make a speculative biology project. Although I replied at the time, I'm now finally giving a proper video response! This goes over how to determine your prompt. The foundation of your project. It also gives some suggestions for the main four types of speculative biology projects (Speculative Future, Alternate Prehistory, Seed World, and Xenobiology) and where you can start to build after the prompt. If you have a project of your own, let me know in the comments what your prompt is and which of the four categories it belongs in, even if it's multiple!
Hope you enjoy this episode, and let me know if you'd like to see more videos like this.

The "Speculative Evolution" genre, also called "Speculative Biology" or "Speculative Zoology" (even if that include plants life) is a old fiction domain and aspect from now but who remain pretty and quite highly popular and present everywhere than ever !
The domain already had some Golden Eras, with some Renaissances, but his future is unquestionably light and important for again a loooong time !
The Speculative Evolution domain still many good days in front of him, and will, even obviousely like the dinosaurs domain, never run out of steam so his concept and infinity limits are so attractive for every people who have imagination !

As someone who wants to make a world with a light amount of spec evo (its just a mix of mesozoic reptiles :p) its always nice to see your work. The creativity and innate understanding of nature at play is so fascinating, and I often see animals from a different point of view that allows me to be more creative. The punctuation of just do whatever is the most fun is encouraging, as I don't have super deep knowledge of ecology or biology, but I'll use what I can understand and hopefully that'll make something interesting 🦖

Technically Kaimere would be a mashup between a seed world, alternate prehistory, and a bit of xenobiology as it has Earth creatures being transported to a terraformed planet in which some of these creatures' lineages became extinct on Earth but were able to continue to persist to modern times on this planet due to the help of some of the planet's native aliens.

My project is a mix of Speculative Biology and Fantasy. The world is called Rasaria, it's based on the idea of what if Dinosaurs didn't go extinct, but with a fantasy twist to it.
I thought of Raptors and Therapods merging to evolve into a race called the Ragnori. These Ragnori come in three classes:
The Laceria: These are the only reptilians with opposable thumbs, the Laceria have 5 houses representing a God. Each with its own special profession and Duke. For example, House Levintina worships their God, Leviathan, and specializes in sailing and fishing. They also have their own mounts like Gigantofeilds (giant feline creatures) and Hell-Hounds (large canines)
The Rapetar: These Ragnori are closely similar to a Utaraptor, only they are larger and have longer arms, they also have specialized blades specific to them. Rapetar are more nomadic and many often live in cities with Laceria.
Tyrinds: These are similar to the T-Rex, only they have long arms and spikes on their backs. The Tyrinds have the most advanced technology of the 3 groups as they carry large blasters on their backs which unleash powerful rays of light. Just the other groups, some Tyrinds live alongside Rapetar and Laceria, but many live in the Vulcano Empire.
They also keep other evolved version of dinosaurs and megafauna as cattle and worship many extinct dinosaurs like Gods.

Thank you so much for covering this further! I mentioned this in earlier videos although I might’ve overwhelmed you with questions, but I’m working on a Sci-Fi project myself despite not being a scientist or expert in anything, myself. What you said about the foundation of our work being the most difficult thing to work on is exactly the kind of struggle I was going through. I had no idea whether or not I wanted to go with a Xenobiology, Seed World, or “Don’t think about it too much.” approach. And admittedly I’m still unsure, but I do know what I can eliminate as possibilities. This has given me a lot to think about while also rekindling my desire to take the spec evo side of things seriously. In other words, this was very helpful for me and I know it’ll be helpful for countless others. Thanks again and I’ll see you next time. :D

Watching this, I quickly realize that my project doesn't neatly fit into any of these categories, but is more a cross between an alternate prehistory and xenobiology project. As in, the Planet in which life exists is not Earth, but is almost identical and there are many clades of lifeforms that we have had on Earth at some point in our history, though the different context has caused a different trajectory from that of Earth. Really glad you made this! Between this and Artifexian's new series, perhaps I'll be able to further refine my idea.

ever since seeded world became the go-to for speculative biology, I’ve had this idea that I can’t really do anything with because I just don’t have the right type of thinking to do a really speculative biology thing.
essentially, my idea is a seeded world, the scientists just finished establishing the moss, lichen, and algae colonies, when a solar flare knocks the station they were living on out of orbit and crashing into the ground, remaining mostly intact from the safety systems.
all the animals are descended from things onboard the station, so the scientists pets (dogs and cats), pests (rats, flies, roaches), the medical leeches, as well as some of the plants descending from the on-board farm, such as radishes and rye as well as, of course, the descendants of the scientists themselves.
    some ideas I have are:
-some of the dogs became whale analogues (”Dogphins”)
    -celery trees (Celetrees)
-degenerate neo-chimps that live like marine iguanas
    -crab-roaches on the coast
-leeches evolve into more “advanced” forms.

Speculative Evolution description commentary (Part 2) :
3 - the "Xenobiology", "exobiology" or "Extraterrestrial life" category one :
This subset regroup all the examples where the setting take place in space and others planets than Earth. And the story follow and turn around all the extraterrestrial lifes or aliens creatures who live on these differents planets.
And from far the category who is the most use today but also in most public production such most of movies or shows. And also the one who give the most freedom in term of liberties about the alien life depiction following the planet description and composition, who can be highly differents from one to an others to an extreme and ridiculous point. There any limits and this category allow to do almost whatevers the people want since they have not to obey earth current conditions, and who can let to the most unique and weird creations.
The examples are so numerous (almost a bilions, more than any of the others categories to this day), that we will stay on some of them. Like :
Robert Forward's 1980 "Dragon's Egg" (who not speak about dragons despite the title); Wayne Barlowe's 1990 book "Expedition" and his 2005 TV adaptation "Alien Planet" with his Darwin IV planet; Dougal Dixon's 2010 book "Greenworld" (only released in Japan and the based on the original idea of Dixon for Man After Man book who change during his developpment); "Natural History of an Alien" 1997 TV show, "Extraterrestrial" 2005 TV Show, the "Alien" franchise with his Xenomorphe alien, Avatar's James Cameron franchise with Pandora or C. M. Kosemen's "Snaiad" world (who is reconized to be the spec evo project with the biggest number of species). There also a lot amount of online project in the net like "The Teeming Universe" by Christian Andrew Cline (who become a book), "World of the Birrins", the famous univers of "Dune" or the famous video games "Subnautica" 1 and 2. The EA and Will Wright 2005 "Spore" video game franchise count as well as a good example of this category.
And 4 - the "Seed World" one :
This very recent newcommer subset regroup all the examples where the setting take place on any other lifeless planets than Earth where earth species are introduce and abbandonned to this new context alone.
The standars, initially, to count as an example, are one signle wave with all the species introduced being almost only plats life, arthropodes and some small vertebrates for only one apex single specie of an animal order who is the biggest specie introduced and the others being his food and component to make the new home of this apex specie suitable for her.
But since that this category is justly recent, ohers acceptables standars can be additionned to complete and improve this newest category.
So, are also accepted the case where the planet see many waves of earth species introduced on her.
Since this category is recent, there only few example to mentionned :
The more obvious one being the incredible "Serina : The World of Birds" universe by Dylan Badja, who follow the story of the introduction and evolution of the Domestic Canary bird into diverse species over milions years, and who is the worlbuilding project who more or less create the Seed World category and his primary standars.
But "Tales of Kaimere" now is a part of this category but who stabilize this later by additioning the concept of many waves instead of one single wave of introduction species on another planet. And even in many ways the second most biggest Seed World project after Serina at my knowledge.
In final, there also a UA-cam channel named The Pikamence who used the famous video game "Spore" by EA to create "Squalosia - The World of Shark" in the same level as Serina (but with sharks instead of birds).
But in many ways, the Spec Evo domain also include others works such all the paleoarts and prehistoric life medias (movies, TV shows, documentaries) depictions since the reconstitutions of pehistoric creatures is base on many speculative ideas (their behaviors, colors, interactions), especially in the case of species we know only from some bones or teeths.
In this case, we can include all the Dino-docs who exist (Walking With ... franchise, Prehistoric Planet, etc.)
But also "All Yesterdays: Unique and Speculative Views of Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Animals" 2012 book from John Conway, C.M. Kosemen and Darren Naish and his sequel "All your Yesterdays".
Also, the Cryptozoology domain count as well as speculative evolution since people speculate on the existence and life of unknow undicovered species such Bigfoot, Yetie, Kraken, Bunyip. And the book, also by John Conway, C.M. Kosemen and
Darren Naish, "Cryptozoologicon" (2013) and his unique depiction of cryptid. It's even state in the book that the cryptozoology domain is considered as "the longest speculative evolution project in history" due to the age of the domain in question.
And to conclude, we can also mentionned all the possible fantasy/fantastical worlds, like every heroic fantasy worlds, online on the net or on TV/Movies media who count as well too in a way even if the science is most of the time put on the sides, often less serious or use, or even completely put over the window (here the creators made anything they want just for fun)).

Speculative Evolution description commentary (Part 1) :
The "Speculative evolution", also called "Speculative biology" and "Speculative Zoology", is a large domain under the more larger ones of the Science domain and the Fiction one as the same time. Being himself divised into many but quite precise, clear and easily distincts sub-genres/Subsets categories (who, of course, exist in their own dimensions/parallel univerese/own alternate reality and chronology, and that, for every example and projects).
The domain is very present in popular culture, althought mostly use as a secondary background aspect/element, but many productions and projects used him as a primary/foreground subject for educationnals issues.
There is 4 mains reconized Spec Evo Categories, with their own standars/definitions :
1 - the "Future evolution/Future Earth" or also "Speculative Future" one.
This categorie is the first to be used and can be considered as the primary one, in addition to be the category for amators/beginners people who want to begin into the domain.
This subset regroup all the examples who explore the fauna and life on Earth in the Future.
The foundations of this subset were laid by H G Wells's The Time Machine already in 1895, with all the domain in general, but become popular and definitely defined by Dougal Dixon book "After Man : A Zoology of the Future" in 1981, beig generally agreed and even completely reconized to be the base category who let to the modern form of the domain overall.
This category can be split into two sub-groups :
    - the one where human society become completely extinct (most o the time, there some exceptions) and the project turn around and follow the animals and flora species over the millions years following the extinction of the human race, with many variations following the events choosen by the authors. Sub-category often used as educationnal environnmental message
    - the one where the story follow only on human evolution and their society, with species appearing both natturally or articfially by genetic engineering/eugenism. Sub-category often used as critics or view on our own society and his aspects.
This category is less use today but still popular. With examples like :
Dixon's "After Man : A Zoology of the Future" in 1981 and "Man After Man" in 1990; Peter Ward "Future Evolution" book (2001); "The Future is Wild" 2002 TV show; Primeval TV shown (2007-2011, only for the few future fictionnals species such the Future Predators, The Megopteran or the fictionnal Tree Creeper raptor dinosaurs); Kurt Vonnegut's novel "Galápagos" (1985); Stephen Baxter's book "Evolution" (2002); C. M. Kosemen's "All Tomorrows" (2008); Olaf Stapledon's "Last and First Men" (1930), "After Earth" movie (2013) or even "Demain, les Animaux du Futur" (2015) by Marc Boulay and Sebastian Steyer.
2- the "Alternative Evolution/Prehistory" or "Alternate Earth" one :
This subset regroup all the examples where the setting take place in another dimension where earth evolution take another way, different from our own earth evolutionnary history, due to the addition or cut of precise extinction and/or geological events. And follow the species of this uchrony/what if story following these changes and the new context in which they are. With mostly one animal order/group becoming dominant on the others (Squamates, Birds etc...).
Starting at the beginning of the changes or directly at one point of this new chronoly (like in our modern times for example). This category is often called to be "non-anthropocentric" since human in genral never evolved in these dimensions.
It's a very high present and popular category, with many examples like :
Dixon's "The New Dinosaurs" in 1988 (who was an attempt to explain Zoogeography); the "Speculative Dinosaur Project" collaborative project online (end currently) who is focused both on dinosaurs than on non dinosaurs creatures such metatherian mammals. There others online examples like this one like "Squamozoic" or "Terra Nova" TV show for example.
However, this category include also works who want to take place in our modern times in our normal earth but with additionals landmasses or animals orders, in such typical Lost World stories (like the one of Arthur Conan Doyle). Like hidden places somewhere where prehistoric animals survived or or new animals orders appeared. In the case of surviving prehistoric creatures such dinosaurs, the examples who can count are ones where the creatures in question continued to evolved after the extinction event who was supposed to kill them. And not remaining unchange without evolving during 66-65 millions years in the case of the original 1933 "King King" movie or the "Lost World" novel hiself by A.C Doyle.
In this part of this category, we can mentioned :
Gerolf Steiner's 1957 hoax book "The Snouters: The Form and Life of the Rhinogrades" and his Rhinogradentia, the (amazing and love letter) 2005 "Peter Jackson's King Kong" movie (remake of the original one) and his extended book "The World of Kong: A Natural History of Skull Island" who explore the (nightmarish and deadly) fauna of this version of Skull Island. There also the 2007 "Dino Sapien" TV show like example.
We can also mentioned the 2004 mock/docu-fiction "Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real" and "Mermaids: The Body Found" (2012) who explore the respective fantastical creatures as once true living orders of animals. And DeviantArt user VikasRao's "Draconology" and Andy Frazer’s "The Dragons of Wales" books in the same idea.
Also, the "Future Evolution" category, on an interesting note, can be include too in this category since his settings take place on a uchrony event too, from our days like divergent point.

I'm glad that you're doing videos on how to construct a speculative biology project because you're actually able to break it down and explain it in a way that is very easy to follow and understand. Based on the information that I just learned from the video I guess my biggest affinity for is seed worlds and alternative prehistory (especially if "lost world"/"fictional unexplored island" type scenarios fall under that category) but I'd personally never dare to try developing something that is full on xenobiology. It's the one that requires the most imagination to pull off convincingly and it also requires a lot of research regarding things that are not necessarily in my area of interest. Plus I think I'm a little too attached to the type of life that we have on Earth lol. But I can always appreciate a good alien concept by somebody else.

Thank you so much! Appreciate it!! Yeah xenobiology is daunting and even before I really broke down what was off I was still a vast majority of the time super unimpressed with a lot of pop culture xenobiology. Not saying I could get it right but so often it just came off as way too convergent. I’m guilty of it too (I rationalized a lot of the floaters designs but they are awfully similar to siphonophores so I ain’t special) but when I do see something like Phtanum B that has really solid and plausible truly otherworldly life it just hits right.

The "Speculative Evolution/Biology/Zoology domain have a very long history ! And does not date from yesterday !
The domain was more or less not intentionally create by H. G. Wells in this famous 1895 novel "The Time Machine".
This book, who also put into the screen almost all the others fictionnals domains and elements who exist in a way or another, possess many speculative life showing on it, with the two humans species that the main protagonnist encounter (the docile Elois and the aggressive and ugly Morlocks) but it's mainly when arrive the chapter where this later encounter farer into the future giants arthropodes that the Speculative Evolution was truly born !
During all the following 1900's century, diverses and independants works, not influenced by each others, will complete the domain overtime, like Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom books and his fictionnal depiction of Mars (and who was adapted in movie once by Disney under the name of "John Carter", 2012, who is a pretty good and entertaining movie in final that I reccomend to watch), or Olaf Stapledon 1930 "Last and First Men: A Story of the Near and Far Future" who follow the evolution and fall of humans overtime, or the funny book and well famous and popular 1957 "The Snouters: The Form and Life of the Rhinogrades" and his Rhinogradentia or "rhinogrades" creatures by German zoologist Gerolf Steiner who describe an entire fictionnal order of creatures on a lost archipelago and being in the same time a big and not at all hidden hoax. But the book is interesting and amazing in the way that he is enterely made withserious description like a real documentary book !
But of course, the modern form of the domain and his current standars was unquestionably and definitely defined, puts and imposed by Dougal Dixon book trilogy commonly called under the name of "The After Man Trilogy" !
Being compose by "After Man : A Zoology of the Future" (1981) who explore the current earth fauna million years after ours moderns days, by "The New Dinosaurs" (1988), who explore modern today earth but with the "What if" scenario of all the dinosaurs not being killed by the End Cretaceous extinction (who never occured) and also published 5 years before the Dinosaurs Renaissances movement with the release of Jurassic Park in 1993 (just to locate), and finally the controersial but netherless impressive "Man After Man" (1990) where we follow numerous humans secies over millions years into the future.
All these books defined their own sub-genre categories where there belong and the works of Dixon are unquestionably ones of the most importants, even THE ones who give the most to the domain and who even stabilize him in addition to
to make Speclative Evolution popular with the public and truly useful in many ways, especially as educational tools to understand most of the Science domain.
In many ways, it's not an understatement to say that all of the Spec Evo examples proects and world are due to Diwon work and influence and even their duty their own existence,
because otherwise nothing would have happened, and we must to remember and honor Dixon for what he did with due respect, rightly deserved, for it all !

I thought of doing a speculative zoology novel series. It could go one of two ways:
-A speculative novel series centered on parrots after humans disappear. There would be actual characters in a sapient parrot society. I haven't read the book series or seen the film of this but it'd be like the Owls of Gahool franchise. Perhaps the parrots would find remnants of humanity, learn from them, or create religions centered on humanity. It wouldn't be too far into the future but enough to see other more evolved animals.
-Another is a more documentary-esque novel project in vein of the Walking with series by the BBC, After Man, and The Future is Wild. It'd begin shortly after humans are wiped out/leave Earth seeing how zoo animals, introduced species, pets, and surviving species adapt in a world without humans, and all the way to what life COULD look like near the end of Earth's habitable period.
I think a principle that people should consider when making a speculative bio project is to not stress out too much about realism. Of course, make the creatures as convincing as you can, but bear in mind we will never know for sure what life will look like in the future, on other planets, or in alternate universes. There should be room to just experiment and have fun with the worlds you're making.

The CGI effects, 3D, the characters modelisation and facial expression, the scenario, the story, the univers' attractivity, the soundtrack/music, the battles etc...
The entire franchise is amazing (never read the book in question but I read the Wikias and others stuff, and all stand well togethers) and really unique.

I think that parrots have a lot of potential in spec evo. Top level thoughts I have are that the world is set in a time where global warming has gone unchecked. Cities are flooded, plants reclaimed the cities, set the story in somewhere like LA (I think parrots were introduced there by mistake), and the world is now more lush, a tropical jungle.

I have also ideas for a spec evo worlbuilding, inspired in part by Owls of Gahool too and Wings of Fire franchise. A mix of them.
But with differents species of Pterosaurs who live in an big lost island sourrounding by permanent black cloud and storms. At the middle of a area like the Bermuda Triangle but somwhere close to Asia realms. There also some small comsognathid like theropods and small dinos who live among the Pterosaurs society.
In the island, there differents kind of Pterosaurs who survived the 66-65 Mass Extinction, with each species forming a tribe.
There small to medium to giant size species. They are all sapient and their society and technological level are similar than the one in Gahool and WOF franchise.
Every species look like overall like their ancestors but many have evolved additionals traits.
Like what I call the "Stars Wings", a specie of medium pterosaur who descend from Rhamphorhynchus and devellopt bioluminescent spots over their body overtime. And they are no others than the famous Ropen cryptid of our myths.
Like Storyline, I have like idea that everything was good and prosperous on the Island since centuries, but than one day, at 40 years ago, one tribe, called the "Beakless wings", who are no others than the Pteranodon (who evolved to become very ugly like flying pest as in obsolete early depictions) declared the wars and decide to conquer the island, and have racial ideas. Saying that only the specie of the Pteranodontidae (them, closes species and relatives like Nyctosaurs) are pures and all the others are impurs.
And the story begin when Uzuki, a Geosternbergia, is abduce with many others young Pterosaurs into the antagonists lairs.
He meet a young female Anurognathid (who are called (Frogmouth Wings) of the same age named Firefly. And despite being including by nature into the purs ones since Geosternbergia and Pteranodon are sisters genus, Uzuki is disgusted by their racial ideas and respect everyone whatever their species.
The two manage to escape by learning to fly and their aventure begin. Overtime, they will meet new mains friends and charismatics characters. But also a lot of incredible well made antagonists. And will fight the Pteranodons dictatur to recovers the peace and the freedom of all Pterosaurs !
The serie is, in my head, of about almost a 20 books, one cycle for all the 5 book in this serie.
But in the last cycle, during a fight among the main antagonist, Kazar Prince of the Beakless wings (the Avatar Zuko of this universe but at the differences that he always do the rights things and never turn into good people side), Uzuki disappear into a storm in front of all his friend and his love interest, Mira, the Princess of the Beakless wings and younger sister of Kazar (the Azula of this universe at thé differences that she is treated well like she deserved at thé end and decide to change of side and to help the good people during the last cycle, during the final battle) who had fight him during the three first cycles but who had developped love feeling for Uzuki.
Uzuki wake up into our world and human society (discovered on a beach), and him and us realize that all the story since the beginning take place in our modern time. That also revealed that all the Pterosaurs culture legends, myths and prophecies (because yes, there is prophecies in this story). His discoveries of himself has a fucking bomb effect in human (I remember that Uzuki is a living AND taking Pterosaurs). Uzuki manage to learn their language (here we are more in a Planet of the Apes vibe), and didcovers their world and culture.
At the end, Uzuki manage to convince humans to help him with their advance military technology and him and the humans go to the Island at the last minutes to save his friend during the final battle against the ennemies.
The Beakless wings are defaited, Kazar remains alive but he's emprisoned, Uzuki and his friend are regarded as heroes, humans and Pterosaurs start to have relations and Uzuki and Mira Can make their life togethers in love and as the leaders of their respective species/tribes in the same time.
      That it !
      Already a good start isn't it !? :)

This video helps so much! I'm working on a fun, xenobiological/alternate societal project with a seed world mixed in (earth humans eventually get involved with influencing how the creatures living there evolve their culture once they come in contact, and the "deities" (Kardachev V entities) that seed both worlds decided to have an experiment, one having influence (other world) and not having any influence (Earth)). Something really simple as a premise, with logical """"magic"""" involved, making sugary sweets the main part of the make-up of my sentient and non-sentient creatures on the other world, and the deity having more control over what happens than what happens on Earth. One thing I need to figure out is how I go about formatting and writing a document following said sentient creatures, their anatomy, and the world they live in (I call them Yuboos!). I want to make a wiki but it's such a huge project it's hard to figure out where to begin that process of writing a technical document, since there's no main characters to follow beyond the 2 "deities."

For example, I’m planning on making a clade of lizard(most likely gecko)descendants with hair-like filaments on their bodies, as well as a group of mammals with a body like a mix between a fossa and Lunagaron from the monster hunter series which would allow it to rear up on its hind legs. Both of these groups of animals I want to develop into creatures that can achieve sizes like that of saurischian Dinosaurs. It’s probably going to take me…. A while before I can think of good explanations for these adaptations

After the First Children extinction, they become faithful and loyal slaves/servants of homunculies.
But after Homunculies were kick off by kaimeran, the Maku become free !
1 - But how they felt, experimented and lived their "freedom" when this event happen ?
2 - What was at the time their relationship with others kaimerans ?
3 - Did they see them as their savior or as those/bad people who eliminated their beloved master ?
4 - What are their relation with them today, bad, correct or good ?
5 - How they lived on their island ?
    6 - Why they eat ?
7 - Will they have a proper video one day ?

Yeeesss! Yes Yes Yes Yes!!! Series Hype!! I've got an alternate prehistory / "kitchen sink" world I'm working on in between other things. (I will at some point have to make another channel for it because Skyrim let's play and worldbuilding don't actually go together as well as one might hope - although... Morrowind fauna...)
The general elevator pitch for this "kitchen sink" world: On Uthir, there were no mass-extinctions, at least not on land. (I don't know how ocean life works so I've... kinda left it a mystery.) Continental break-up and volcanism led to localized die-offs that paved the road for some clades, leaving other continents to develop in a somewhat time-locked state. I've mainly focused on the "Permian" continent, which will eventually join back up with the "Eocene" continent and the modern one. (That's actually my next step - I need to research biotic interchanges.) There's also a "Jurassic" continent which has sort of become Uthir's version of Australia, except with Morrison formation offshoots instead of roos and monitor lizards. (It's my ARK continent - because I want domestic dromies and guard Allos, dangit!)
And there's magic. Which... isn't actually something that humans invent, though they do go hog-wild with it once they figure out how imagination works. They're not even the first creatures to get Smart, as one might expect with a whole continent of mostly-uninterrupted Permian survivors. But that's a story for once I've got more of the evo spec'd out.
Looking forward to the rest of this series! :D

Agree with Dudot that Alt Prehistory best describes those. I do think folklore and cryptid explanation should have at least their own sub-category of alt prehistory since they are distinct in that we have a list of traits we’re building back from in a worldbuilding sense, rather than taking an ancestor and extrapolating their descendants. I’m trying to come up with some speculative biologies for the game Minecraft. It’s for a galacticraft like mod I want to make. I have inferred some stuff about the overworld. Such as, canonically planets, stars, and moons in Minecraft are large cubes with land on all sides. Evidenced by the planet banner template. The overworld has no seasons thus no axial tilt. On the top and bottom of the overworld are perpetually unlit poles with hostile mobs like strays everywhere. The sun’s light wouldn’t hit the poles due to the shape of planets.
My main challenge is figuring out how Minecraft’s magic would come into play. How would something like an entire planet enchanted with fire resistance due to large amounts of lapis in the planet effect life?
Edit: and another question brought about by the recent mob vote winner, how would the six limbed sniffer evolve into four limbed creatures like humans or pigs? Did they come from another dimension and thus subject to different evolutionary pressures?

Triassic-Mammals evolved a Spiky Fur like Echidna, Hedgehog and Porcupine, and due to evolutionary pressure of Reptiles these Spiky guys were better protected from Dinosaurs as compared to their relatives. Or at least when they were killed their spikes also destroyed the Archosaur internals, putting an evolutionary pressure towards spikes.
Jurassic, when Dinosaurs emerge as the dominant reptiles, Mammals burrow and these Spikes evolve into stronger more robust Scales, Fur, Feather like structures. Burrowing Mammals now diversify beneath Dinosaurs and some even take up flight and rather thn remaining in black and white, Mammals get a better night vision (Rods) and advanced colors (Cones). Although cones are initially a wastage, but Angiosperms take quicker route to outcompete Gymnosperms, the fructivorous and pollinating Mammals stand advange due to color vision in dark combined with a keen sense of smell. This linneage of Mammals will spread across the breaking continents through, flight, continental connections, etc. diverse at the end of Jurassic into Monotremes, Multituberculata, Metatherians, Xenarthrans, Afrotherians, Laurasiotherians and Eurarchontoglires.
Crataceous, when the first Birds evolve from small Theropods, they are initially Mammal hunters, but the Fur-->Spike-->Feathers are better at work than Scale-->Feathers. The comourflage, manuverability, better senses, widespead diet from insectivory to pollination give them advantage and thus although Birds evolve and diversify, they are a bystandard with small sized yet diversifying Mammals. Besides the diversifying Angiosperms, Insects and other stuff pose a threat to Dinosaurs. Boom! the Asteroid.
Paleogene, the dead and dying world are recovering, its a sick planet, but the Terror Birds are a legacy left by Dinosaurs, however, very little of other birds are left, most of their niches are occupied by some flying Mammals. Flying groups of Mammals will however later evolve separately, as one of the mamml ancestor flew in Triassic but went back to ground in Jurassic and then other groups evolved. As the age of Birds comes to a close due to competition from Whale-Daddy Ambulocetus, the Crocodilans face their own set of competitors from giant Ferae evolving.
Paleogene is a chaotic period, but unlike OW (Our World), the Paleogene faces a minor ice-age before PETM and Crocodilans due to Ice-age combined with competition from Ferae and smarter Mammals taking over got extinct just before it was the right time for them. The PETM starts another melodramatic change of Woodland to actual Forest, however Grass goes on colonizing the region and Terror Birds the last remenescants of Archosauria go extinct. Its just Mammals, Anapsids (Turtles) and Diapsids (Lizards, Snakes and relatives) now. And the Reptilian cousins of now extinct Archosaurs reek havoc by growing to Titanoboa and Giant-Turtle sizes. However, its only Mammals who occupy niches left by Archosaurs:
    1. Ferae competitors evolve into Carnivorans and Scaly Mammals (Pangolins and Pangogators).
    2. Flying groups that are potential: 1a. Acciptriformia (Eagles, Kites, Vultures, closely related to Caniformes), 1b. Falconiformia (Falcons, Hawks, Vultures, closely related to Feliformes thus another Cat vs. Dog), 2. Flying Squirrels (actually flying not gliding, include Passerines, Owls and Parrots), 3. Sugar Flyers (not Sugar gliders, include Nightjarsugars, Hummingsugars and Sunsugars), 4. Bats fly in night and their closest relatives the Columbats (Mesites, Pigeons and Sandgrouses) fly in day, 5. Flying Multituberculates evolve into Aequiornithes (Pestrels to Storks except Penguin group which evolved from Monotremes), 6. While Ducks, Flamingos, Grebes, etc. evolve from Lepticdium, 7. Flying Lemurs (Actually flying and include Mousebirds, Kingfishers, etc. except the Hornbill group which evolved as a part of Ornithomonotremata), 8. Possums (include Bustards, Cuckoos Tucaros, Waders, etc.). Non Flying Mammals also evolve to occupy niches such as 1. Game-Hyraxes (Chickens, Turkeys, etc. except Peafowl, who despite their name are big Flying Squirrels), 2. Penguins (related to Monotremes), 3. Macropods (Kangaroos that evolve for running include Ostriches, Kiwis, etc.).
    3. Ambulocetus sons go all the way in sea to be Ichthyosaurs replacements, similar to OW.
As PETM ends, Iceage begins and these guys specialize in living in a Grassland ecosystem. Other Mammals evolve alongside these which are the same as OW. Zealandia becomes Paradise of Marsupials. Neogene and Holocene continue as they are, except, Homo sapiens evolution takes place later, so the Animals are well prepared for the Hunting Trip already and our species doesn't have much impact on the extinction, thus the 6th mass extinction the Homo sapiens isn't as severe.
Civilization forms as usual but Mammoths, Mastodons, etc. don't go extinct and we see a variety of Mammals especially the Flying-Squirrels becoming widely adapted. Another exception to OW is that the evolution of Colors spectrum which took place way earlier in Jurassic (Night vision with Colors, Rods and Cones) so Mammals are well prepared for the Reptile clan already, even if their Fur-Spike-Feathers or Fur-Spike-Fur are way more colourful.

For example, the oldest one/discovered first is my take on the Lost World. Located deep in the Congo Rainforest instead of South America. Why? Two words:
    Mokele-Mbembe.
Not only are there extant animals that would be found outside the basin, but also those that are also cryptids, and its own Kaiju that protect the Basin from outside threats.

The Solar Trudge is not canon and a resident specie on Kaimere planet, right ?
Was just an example, right ?
Because it's technically impossible than any others life from other planets can be harvested and survived on Kaimere.
Because the Portal send on part on him into space long time ago, and when he found Earth, he still on this planet and stop his research of others possible others ones who possibly can have life on it (the Portal gladly enough of the earth as long as it has life on it and that he can "borrow" to put it on Kaimere, his birthplace, to improve the latter in terms of ecology) and began to harvest life on her.
Also, since this time, Kaimere become excatly overtime like the Earth, being just a bigger planet and having currently a overall climate more warmer.
Because of this, it's impossible and even not really viable that others species from others planets, who should be very different in everything, to survive and established themselved on Kaimere.
Aliens from others planets, if they exist, must lived on planet with atmosphere, gravity, geology, temperatures, climates, and environnement to raddically different from Kaimere or the Earth.
Pandora Avatar's planet species, for example, can't survived on Kaimere only because the oxygen composition and level is too different on both planet (in the movies, humans must wears oxygen mask in orders to breath correctly on Pandora).
And even, once harvested, the aliens must face the already established local life in ecological niche, direct confrontation etc....
    So, yes, not very viable.
And also, I find that it's not important or neccessary t include, use or explored this aspect because the World of Kaimere is already sufficiently complex and attractive the way he is already. Sometimes, less is more and it's prefferable that some things remains simples.
But, otherwise, you made a pretty good alien ! The Solar Trudge seem really interesting !

    • @TalesofKaimere

Yeah it was mostly just to illustrate how you can design large organisms in an entirely distinct context from Earth. I wanted Kaimere to be similar enough that Earth organisms can be replicated and thrive on their own, but that was a very intentional decision, and you can have organisms in entirely different contexts. The 'Kaimereverse' has many other planets with organisms, but like the solar trudge, those brought to Kaimere couldn't survive in the conditions of Kaimere so weren't replicated like Earth's portal was.

I always thought my speculative biology seems a bit, fake. Or just something that isn't that realistic. But I always tell myself that it doesn't have to be realistic all the way through. If you really want to make a speculative world that is believable? Go ahead its pretty impressive. But don't let any kind of properties from reality ruin the fun, even if it leans just a little more onto a more fantasy sort of style. I'd call it points for creativity, well not for solving problems that could exist, but just seeing how interesting it could get if you scratch off a few rules. It wouldn't hurt naking it a bit unrealistic or weird, because its all about getting funky. If it sounds more like world building, isn't that what speculative biology basically is? So yeah that's my "advice." Its about fun, not a biology homework in disguise.
