I also have the same surgery as you , I’m glad that it’s possible to have the epidural and not completely out the window!! I’ve always been so curious about how carrying a baby and birth would be like with it. This is the only video I found on it after searching for years. so thank you for sharing!
I haven’t watched it yet but I had a spinal fusion and I’m due in 3 months, my obgyn has never had any patients who have gone through that so I’m having to talk to an anesthesiologist soon.
Thank you for sharing I'm pregnant with my first and I had scoliosis surgery when I was 13. So 21 years ago, my fusion is from L4 to t2 so I am nervous if it will work. I appreciate your story. It gives me an idea what to expect. Not many out there like us ❤️🙏
I have had a spinal fusion and cage surgery(not due to scoliosis) I'm due in Dec and Soo nervous since this surgery is not common in women 20-30years of age. Finding relatable women is so hard. They have not confirmed that I can have an epidural, hopeful they are able to administer it. Thank you for sharing your story!
How did everything go for you? I also had spinal fusion surgery, in 2019, and now need a second one scheduled for the end of April. Mine also was not due to scoliosis. I don’t know if having a baby is even still an option for me. 😔
I’m so glad somebody made a video. I had my entire back fused because I had curves on both ends of my spine - I’m currently 33 weeks and am terrified. They said I can’t have an epidural and I’m trying to mentally prepare myself for what’s to come.
@@adriann3471 it actually went well! I was able to get the epidural you just have to bring in your X-ray scans or ask them to look it up so they can make a plan.
I has l5s1 fused. They told me absolutely not to a epidural that it was not worth the complications that arise. So i gave birth without And felt so empowered
Thank you for sharing your experience! I’m still young so I don’t plan on having children anytime soon but I had a spinal fusion t2-l4 a few years back and I’ve been curious as to how it would work in the future :) thank you!
Wow...glad everything "came out" okay. I was so focused on what you were saying that it startled me when River dropped the camera! Thanks for the update.
Hey just wanted to know can you have C section for the delivery? I think would be easier for back surgeries I spoke with my dr and they said normal delivery is not safe for the mothers who had spine surgery
You got this! I was nervous too, but I was able to talk to my doctor and have a plan and just be prepared. I think that was key with me, just knowing all the options and what we were going to try in what order. Please, please let me know if you have specific questions, I'd be happy to give advice based on my experience if what I covered in the video didn't cover it all =]
Hey it’s been 2 years but how was your experience? I’ve got the rods and screws too and I want a normal delivery although my doctor is trying to convince me for a c section.
About 4.5 months ago I had my second little boy, also a natural childbirth :) it’s a long story but we almost didn’t make it to the hospital in time so I had him just minutes after entering the building (so no meds or even hooked up to anything). My back was great and no complications. However, I would absolutely work with your Dr to come up with the best plan based on your injury. Everyone is different. You’re going to do great! And I know it can be worrying/scary but everything will be okay. :)
I had my surgery at 11 and now that I’m in my child bearing years I wonder if I’ll be able to get an epidural. I’m fused T4-L2 so we’ll see! Thanks for sharing your story!
Thank you for sharing this. I had spinal surgery when I was 12, now I am 27. It was twisted 80% in upper and lower back each. I had 12 vertebra fixed, so I have a titanium bar that is "attached" to a big part of my spine and I can't really bend in the middle of my back 😞 now I'm 13 weeks pregnant and I was sure that I would have to have a C-section, but I hope I will be able to have a vaginal birth... Overall it is better lets be real, you don't have to worry about your big scar and at the same time having to take care of a small baby, it sound so much better without the C-section 😅😅😅 I am just scared that I will not be able to push because of potential back pain? Idk if that is possible during labour, does the pushing affect your back?
Update: I gave birth vaginaly, with epidural that didn't help all the way but overall I did it 💪 and baby and me are heatlhy ❤️ little bit of back pain postpartum days, but nothing terrible
What types of positions during labor were helpful to you? What types of modifications or tools helped you through labor and delivery? Thank you so much for providing your story!!🎉
I go to my first appointment tomorrow and I’m thinking I’m around 8 weeks, I had a spinal fusion years ago and I’m thinking the epidural isn’t going to be an option because my whole spine is fused. Definitely going to explore my options, possibly a water birth! ✨✨✨ prayers for a healthy baby
Don’t know if you guys will see this on time but I also have my whole spine fused 6 years ago and I’m currently 31 weeks pregnant, how did you guys go about giving birth? No injuries to the baby when pushing? I’m so worried. Please help!🥺
So informative! I had a very severe curvature, so I have my entire spine fused! I have done so much research and you are the only person I could find with some information on childbirth after scoliosis. Did you have alot of pain during the last trimester? And would you have more kids ? I'm worried ill never want to have any because my back hurts everyday, when I'm not even pregnant. I can't imagine how bad it will feel with a giant belly. Again you were so informative and it gives me hope that I can have my own kids. I've always wanted to be a mom but im so scared of how my back will handle it. During and after.
Truthfully my back did not hurt as much as I thought it would during the third trimester. I had other issues, like acid reflex, which were much more top of mind! Based on my experience, I would go through another pregnancy even knowing that once again an epidural might not work for me. If you work on strengthening your abs, which I'm sure you have heard can help with back issues, as well as yoga before getting pregnant, that should help but obviously not a guarantee. Everyone's experiences are different to some degree. Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment and I hope this additional info helps you in your journey. If you have additional questions, please feel free to ask!
My daughter had spinal fusion surgery recently and in a year she wants to get pregnant. The neurosurgeon said there is no reason why she couldn't get pregnant after a year and if all goes well in the healing process and PT. I was wondering is there anything like a soft brace or something that could support the baby and the back during pregnancy? I don't even know if that's a thing people use. Just wondering. Thank you.
How did your body handle the pain of labor before the epidural? I am pregnant for the second time and am worried about this delivery. The first time, anesthesia wouldn’t even touch my back, even when doctors and nurses asked multiple times. And I think my back didn’t want to participate in labor and so my abs had to push the baby out and I tore horrifically and I just don’t want that to happen this time.
My whole spine is fused due to having such a severe case of scoliosis and I’m about 30 weeks right now. I’m so nervous because I do not want a c section and want a vaginal birth. I’m also super nervous about possibly not having an ricuras. Hopefully will meet with an anesthesiologist beforehand as well, but highly doubt epidural will even work in my back.
Hope all went well with you delivery! Please could I ask whether you decided to have a c section or whether this was recommended by the doctor? I’m in the same position with a whole spinal fusion and I’m leaning towards a c section but not sure whether I should try to Labour naturally. I won’t be able to have an epidural so I would be fully sedated during birth. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated!
@@paolajimenez1121 hey! I decided to have a c section and I was fully sedated. It went really well and I’m glad I chose this route - I had no pain or pressure on my back whatsoever - in fact when I woke up I felt a sense of relief that the baby weight had gone as it was causing my back to constantly ache! The recovery took about 2 months for me to feel fully capable of doing everything (so make sure that you have good support on hand to help with lifting etc) but I’m really pleased I did it and I will be doing the same again for my next pregnancy. The surgery isn’t worse than our spinal fusions. Good luck with it all!
@@Leah-bm6oh Thank you so much for your fast response! This really calmed my nerves! I was terrified of having induction contractions with no epidural. Will opt for C-section :)thanks a million
Hey friends, I just wanted to throw out a hello. Hope you are enjoying the time with your wonderful son and are happily on the way back to a normal routine. Hearts to all of you and much love. Happy Thanksgiving.
Thank you so much for sharing your story! I am pregnant for the first time, and it's been over 12 years since my back surgery. Would you mind sharing your X-ray? I know it's a lot to ask, but I wonder how your spine looked. Maybe we could exchange emails? Greetings!

Interesting to hear about the concerns with back issues and labor. I’m sure your info will help others! And a 10 minute push is so great.
I had a cartilage operation on the nerve. Does it affect childbearing in the future?
