- WhatsApp Threatens to Leave India over Encryption Rules | Vantage with Palki Sharma
WhatsApp has threatened to leave India amid a legal showdown with the government of India over the new IT rules issued in 2021. The rules require social media firms to find the "first originator" of information by breaking end-to-end encryption. WhatsApp has argued that breaking its end-to-end encryption would violate the fundamental right to privacy. It may also lead to similar demands and rules in other countries. WhatsApp has more than 400 million active monthly users in India and generates around $1 billion in revenue. Is WhatsApp serious about leaving India? What would be the impact? Palki Sharma tells you.

Whataboutism is the favorite tool of Indians online. You want your government to spy on your chats? Sounds like China to me. Asking to break end to end encryption is a serious problem, if you realised it you wouldn't make comments like these.

I am a software engineer, and trust me when I say this - There is no need to break encryption in order to find the originator the the message. They just need to store small metadata around the messages that's all.
I don't know why they are trying to fight every argument with breaking encryption.
It's a violation of freedom. Who decides what fake news! State wants to jail people whom it doesn't like. Authoritarian state like this do. No democracy has it
True...
Chhapri North indian
I don't think you quite comprehend the problem. The issue is not finding the originator or receiver of the message; the issue is finding what the message itself was. If you don't know what the message is metadata is not going to help with the government's intended goal of finding out who is saying what. The "who" is easy, the "what" is the question.
Good luck!
"They just need to store small metadata around the messages that's all."
Does that really work? If the content of the messages is encrypted then how do you know which message's metadata you should look at?
Same thing happened with VPN a few months ago. Indian Govt asked all data from VPN companies based in India. They said no. Govt was not willing to compramise on a chance to get all data so didn't make any positive change. All major VPN companies left India for Good. Same will happen for WhatsApp as well. If They have to follow Indian Law, They will have to break encryption Worldwide. Most countries will not like that and will mount lawsuits over lawsuits over WhatsApp (especially EU). So WhatsApp will readily leave India if that situation comes. All apps will leave. India will become a surveillance state like China and North Korea.

I stand with Whatsapp on this case. Their messages are end to end encrypted using an open source protocol and not having encrypted messaging is a breach of privacy. Plus, governments change. The rules have no accountability for the government regarding which person's data do they request access of. Different governments (existing or future) may easily misuse it.
But country security comes first rather than individual privacy, or end to.end encryption or not following countries laws, or company false threat of leaving.
@@tss4629 Okay then install a camera and microphone in your house which the government can access live at any time. Surely, nothing can be more secure than that right? To punish the ones who are misusing the technology, a billion innocent people have to sacrifice their privacy. That’s not fair.

Absolutely correct.
If you think that groups like meta, WhatsApp or Twitter are saving your privacy then you still have no idea about their true nature. They sell your data to third party internet brokers to gain 'extra income' in their own pockets.
Also don't try to undermine the state security situation of India by saying some people 'misusing' it. India is right now one of the major targets of multiple terrorist outfits of the world. The only reason why we are still haven't faced multiple terrorist attacks on every week is only because security agencies are working day and night to hack and sabotage the terrorism plans.
1. Fundamental rights are important and should be absolute. There is a reason we call it FUNDAMENTAL. 2. This'll go to the Supreme Court. 3. If need be there are loads of engineers who can make a new messaging app for India and the world.
This is so stupid. Develop app and you use it. After a while don't say that your mobile is hacked or bank account or personal details are leaked. 400 Million Indian's accounts will be at security risk if Encryption is disabled.

But my concern is. We elect the govt. We know that govt needs to protect the country and us. So they can arrest someone or even get into someone's house with a warrant to search. We gave govt that power. We follow the rules on the road. Why. Isn't it goes against our freedom? I want drive opposite direction. Can I. Or one terrorist says. I have my privacy. While the government here have logical reasoning here if someone use these encryption for spreading misinformation or creating a chaotic environment then it should be trackable. You need to know the difference between privacy and liberty
@@dcforever8759 lets assume I dont know. Can you tell me what is the different?
Great as soon as I type anything I get relevant ads from meta platforms so much so for that encryption explanation India should kick out these companies if they are not following law of the land 😊😊
Have you ever tried researching why you get ads about the specific thing you're chatting..No.
Because if you've done your research you won't be commenting this..
You get ads based on the keyboard activity.. try replacing the Google keyboard with any privacy based keyboard (if it exists) & yes, whatsapp chats are end to end encrypted, they can't read your chats.. if they were to compromise & give the encryption keys, say bye bye to privacy
Any product we write on WhatsApp we get ads so this means it's already being dencrypted for selling data.
WhatsApp should leave india ASAP. don't come back please no one needs WhatsApp
Its too dangerous to let govt controll the communication channels there will be no privacy left.
Lol!is there any privacy exist there ,i mean i searched a heir care product on Flipkart after that Google giving me same product ads throughout their apps and meta apps like yt,insta,fb,news channel websites almost everywhere
Bye bye whatsapp from india. Welcome arattai messenger to brave and strong.
WhatsApp would lose significant amount of users. WhatsApp will never. Indians have leverage
these rules are to enslave us
WhatsApp should be gently kicked out. 99% of cybercrimes takes place over WhatsApp.
Palki waiting for your china news, pak news😂😂
They don't have guts to leave India hahaha 😂😂
Stupid!! Do you think the security is for gain? It's for your own freedom
😮It looks like some countries will follow China's step after they laughed at China before.
There should be a middle ground on this.
court should put the point forward that if you don't comply with the rule of the land, then leave.
Nope fool. This is illegal rule. Noone should follow this.
Whatsapp leaving is not big deal, the problem is the precedent left behind, once you let the government have 100% access to your messages, video comments, emails, say goodbye to try to organize a protest, they will use every message and comment against you
@@nishant54 you seem ill-informed about whats legal and illegal. the illegal rule that you are referring is literally the new IT law.

This case is like a natural barrier to giant tech dominance. As the solution for this is each nation having their own messaging service as per their own laws, regulations and national security requirements.
The huge catch with this is that then, communications between home and diaspora will be broken. SMS is a classic example of this - I can't message people in America without an American SIM card. Social media will no longer work globally. If you are in the West, how will you send send Auntie photos of your first baby born there? Email would be the only option left.
Privacy is important govt is in the wrong
I think this is the best opportunity for India to make one of its own. Infact they should make all major social media applications. We should abandon X or anything by Meta.
What type of features you want in that app... I ask because I am coder and developer so if I make the app
@@shaileshdabhi792 How about a unified platform for chatting and social media. That is, an app that has apps similar to WhatsApp, Instagram and FB under the same tool. Similar or more advanced features is relevant to time and we can’t really answer that with certainty.

They can use NLP before encryption. This makes no sense. How do they know if one message has been forwarded multiple times. It means they have algorithms running on the encrypted thread
The govt will use these rules as weapon against decenting individuals and opposition political parties, i think but indian people deserve these kind of rules actually there should be constant monitoring of every citizen.
By By whtsapp.. Nothing going to happen to indians. We will make our own..

It’s all about convenience. If they want ads, they’ll even sneak up in our bedroom and voila- a condom ad next day 😂
For children or kids, companies or sellers should install security prog. that restricts malicious webs and explicit contents as well as block out unnecessary and misguiding adult trends in social media.
Just too catch a few criminals how can govt. breach privacy of all the innocent citizens?!
If your family members were killed because of those few criminals, would you still say privacy is important??
@@shivananda8796 You will become like CHINA, heavily censored. Communist India

Just imagine a situation where you are wrongfully accussed and put through a trial as a criminal even before anything is proven!
As a programmer, If I need to trace senders we must store data, and if data is stored there is a possibility to misuse of these datas n in case of data breach you can't blame anyone else and this is not just a privacy matter of any individual but it is also leads to national security issue bcoz the WhatsApp is used by almost every person in India and the world as well including military and other people involved in national security. Imagine, what if their data would be in hand of criminals, there and their family life will be in danger and it might also be the open door for other kind of crimes. So beware while making such kind of laws.
Exactly, I don't know how such large no. Of people are so blindly following whatever the govt is doing. Indians don't want privacy??? Surely india may not be USA, but surely we can't build a smooth and so well organised app like whatsapp under few days. Data must be protected even if it's the govt asking it. Make the laws such that people have privacy, companies agree upon and benefits the national security too
They will not compromise
One doesn’t need to break the encryption to trace the original sender. Each message sent needs to get a unique identifier and store the contact number with this unique identifier in a database. Any message that the GoI wants the originator, they just need to search the database for the message unique identifier and get the number. It’s a little more work, and WhatsApp is shying away from doing the right thing for reasons best known to them
No problem....local apps will get better opportunities
yes, more than local apps, hackers will become billionaires as all 400 million Indian accounts will be easily compromised because of no encryption.
@sekharduggirala3965 what you are coming to say Mr
@sekharduggirala3965 how can I believe American companies will not compromise my details...........
Kindly go through some inter company and judicial MOU for their frauds ..........they paid huge fine
A huge country like India should have its own messaging app....
Indian people are very aware of the latest developments & people will change over to any new messaging service that replaces WhatsApp in a very short time.....
The security of the nation is of paramount importance. ( It would particularly go a long way in securing internal security of the country )
If the government introduces & owns a similar messaging service, Aadhar Card, UPI, Government payments, schemes & subsidies could all be integrated to provide a seamless service - will result in a truly digitised India
Sure , leave it to the government to build a safe and secure app. Seems like a brilliant idea. Really, if privacy is not important, people can leave whatsapp and opt for services that are not secure. For everyone else that cares about privacy, I really hope whatsapp wins this case.
@@bhatnitish A honest, patriotic citizen doesn't have any use of privacy.....
Those who don't want anything to do with the government could opt for end to end encrypted messaging services using VPN
@@Kanthavel.KV.Chennai.Bharat I have to disagree on that. Privacy is absolutely essential to a democracy, the government cannot be given such sweeping power to poke their nose in our personal lives as they simply cannot be trusted to not misuse it. Remember, even MISA was brought in on the pretext of "maintaining national security". Loss of privacy is especially bad for corporate and government whistleblowers that expose corruption. Currently, there are legal provisions to seize someone's phone, open it, and read the chats from the phone itself which is more than enough to assist in investigations. The status quo has worked, there is no need to bring in draconian laws that seemingly serve no purpose but give politicians more control over us.
