Wow is that a solid dart, has one of the sketchiest slant sixes I've seen though. This project is going to be great, really looking forward to you putting this one together, It's going to be a "Super Dart"! I've got an A body that needs a lot of help, so I'm looking for some ideas for it.
I had never paid much attention to the 6 cylinder A-Bodies before. I had an old Mopar chassis book that said the V8 A-bodies from 1973 and newer with V8 engines and disc brakes got the 4.5" bolt pattern wheels. I didn't think much of it, until somebody told me that also included 6 cylinder A-bodies with disc brakes. I think those only came with 8.25" rear ends, which would seen odd in a 6 cylinder car. I later found out that for 1976 all A-bodies got disc brakes, due to federal safety standards for 1976 models. It looks like this 1974 6 cylinder has disc brakes. Is the rear end an 8.25" and is the wheel bolt pattern 4.5"? That old Mopar book was from 1979, but the article in it may have been older, since it was a compilation book of several older Mopar technical books.
You are correct that all 73+ disk brake A bodies use 5x4.5” - but there were many, many cars with a 7 1/4 rear axle and the larger bolt pattern. That’s what this car has.
I hate to admit this, but despite living in Tampa Florida, I have to start wearing a sweater to watch your videos now. If I ever see it snowing in your videos, I will have to start popping some heavy duty meds! BTW... way cool A-body project!
Hi Donny. I have been kicked out of Lakeland more than once. I'm quite thankful and surprised that Jamie has not blocked me. I wouldn't be surprised if Jamie warned you about me. Love your videos Jamie! I’m a die hard mopar fan too! I’ve got a 72 charger in my shop right now and I’m doing paint and body on it! My question is it won’t stay running! Only if I hold the key to the start position?
I have a 74 with the slant 6. If you block the hose that goes from the valve cover to the carburetor you should get a tremendous improvement in drive ability. Best to use a bolt that blocks the hose.
…the crankcase breather hose? You kinda need crankcase vapors to go somewhere. Or are you talking about the PCV valve? You kinda need that too. I’m confused by this.
Yes it is the crankcase breather hose. The more I think about it if you cap it off I think it should be capped and connected to the carburetor and not the crankcase. I hope this helps.
@@gbrads I don't think blocking the crankcase breather is a good idea, and I don't really understand how it could make an appreciable difference in the slant's performance. Crankcase pressure needs to be vented somewhere, or it will figure out how to vent itself through every gasket in the engine. The PCV valve will handle a good bit of this, but especially with excessive blow-by like found in this poor slant, it's probably not going to do enough. You can switch to an atmospheric breather, but again, I don't know that it will make any noticeable difference in performance.
Sweet MERCY ‼️‼️ Mother of Pepple Beach 🏆 That A body is in MINT condition CA rust free car Christ , that sheet Metal is all there , original & Untamperd with condition I do like those 73 & 74 tail lights too
My 340 4 spd swinger is a street car, not a race car. Mechanical secondary QFT lived just fine on it. EFI and a little boost works way better on it. Plus, 4 wheel disc brakes, 5 speed, stiff gears, and wizzy suspension makes it even better yet. I say just because Dodge screwed up the first time, doesn't mean you have to the second time. This build will be fun to watch.
My 340 4 speed Demon was a street/strip car from almost new. Although the 340 is currently out in favor of a 360, it is otherwise still set up as it always has been - and I will never change it. Four wheel manual drum brakes, manual steering, four speed, and 4.10s… it’s awesome. I will be applying boost to other projects… and am very much looking forward to that.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Yep, it's your car and you get to choose your path with it. I've owned mine for well over 20 years and I guess I got a little bored. Decided to load the parts cannon up and have some fun with it. I have no regrets.
@@boostedswinger I'll absolutely be doing that with other cars. And I'm sure if you decide to go back to stock on yours some day you'll be able to do that. There were only 2500 or so '71 340 4 speed Demons made. Mine is a time capsule and I love it.
Oh my god I think this just might be my father's car! I haven't thought of it in decades, but when I was young he had a pale yellow Dodge Dart. I've been searching the internet to find out which year, because none of the ones I was seeing looked similar. But this is the car. He lived in California and the last time I saw the car was probably 1988, when he sold it to someone else.
Well that’s interesting. You must have been looking at regular Darts, which are much more square. This is the Dart Sport, which was built from ‘73-‘76 and is actually based on the curvy Plymouth Duster body. I don’t know what year Dylan’s uncle bought it, but it has definitely been in California for a long time. So it’s possible, but I will say, there were plenty more of them this color.
I may have said this before.....I love Darts. There, see? I said it again......just in case you'd forgotten. I also love Dusters...but some say they are the same car. I like what the subscriber intends to do with the beast....and I suppose if one has a fair wad of cash spare, they can chuck everything they can find that's all shiny and new at it, which certainly takes a lot out of the equation in regard to which bits will fail first over time as she's driven..., so I am in full support there too (although I personally don't think I could afford all that - it all looks and sounds rather expensive, so I will just have to live vicariously through this build). The only things left to fail on the car will be the likes of the wiring loom....er....um....unless he has supplied one of them in the pile too....and ancillaries, cosmetics and interior. Me? I'd probably leave everything else stock (unless the car was begging to be changed) so she was a wolf in beige clothing, but that's me and my preference for sitting benignly at a set of lights in a boring looking car and then flooring it off the mark and leaving them behind in my dust(er). Man, that poor old 225.... Many years ago I had a car with an engine so worn out that it used to backfire through the carb and stall any time it was under the minutest of load - just like the Dart did. Cresting a hill was a cause for celebration, because if the engine detected it was being made to work, it sneezed, backfired, dropped a cylinder, farted, blew smoke from anywhere it could (including the cabin vents) and did its level best to stop before the top. How a car can go from 60mph to 10 in the space of less than an eighth of a mile and without someone hitting the brake, is a feat in itself, but I preferred to get to my destination and used to nurse it along....until the day I could afford to replace it. The engine HAD done 113,000 miles after all.....which isn't bad for a 1500cc engine from 1962, but was still about 10k miles past it's use-by date. Got to find more on this one....
Wolf in beige clothing is exactly the plan here. There won’t be many obvious signs that it isn’t still grandma’s slant six car - until you hear it. Yeah, you’re right - that is a pretty cool trick. Haha.
I just realized that when you showed Al Bundys infamous Dodge, that it was red. In some episodes it is metallic beige, and blue in other episodes. His Dodge is actually several Plymouth Dusters of varying years as well.
It’s not granny green! A magnum and some new interior parts and you have my dream daily. I see we both enjoy the company of a Snap-On man way too much.
my answer to anything that doesn't have a big block..... put a stroker small block 408 in it... Also that front end with a hood scoop and stripes helps hide the ugly.
Well that’s the answer we went with in this case. Haha. I think we are sticking with “sleeper” on this one. Not that a car with the wheels, sound and exhaust note this will have when I’m done could really be considered a sleeper… but it will appear mostly stock.
My bad, the more I looked at the body color, the more I realized my dad's '72 Dart in Light Gold was actually a different shade- kinda more like the door that's a different shade than the rest of the body. Anyway- it it what it is = Pus Yellow...lol
The width of the A body axle never changed. The track of the front end was widened along with the front frame rails during the ‘67 redesign, and disk brakes push the front wheels out a little bit further, but the rear was never changed. That’s the story I know.
It’s just sitting around in my way… ‘64 Galaxie 500 XL with 390. I started a video on that one, but timing chain jumped or something else weird and I’m not going any further with it. The owners will be selling it as is.
My '76 Valiant sedan came from the Tulalip reservation. It also is "Sahara Beige," with the very un-'custom' trim level. 88K original miles & super solid except the spare tire well needs replacement. .892 & .893 ("340) torsion bars, sway bar, passenger exterior mirror, map light, HD cooling and HD rear leaf springs. Everything else? El cheapo deluxe!
Good solid low buck transportation that could survive a teenager's neutral drops on Friday night lol. BC Hydro $500 auction price. Car would last 10 years with little maintenance. Just keep a spare ballast resistor in the trunk...
I think you’re absolutely right. Haha. He did offer to help in another comment. If he has to fly out here every time I need help pushing a car, this is going to get expensive 😅
I actually like the beak nose. Not as nice as the 71-72 Demon front I admit, but the beak nose is fine. I would just hit the grille with flat black paint. A blacked out grille really helps the beak nose.
I have seen a couple… and several others barely hanging on. I sent a rod through the side of one once, but that was operator error. It turns out you shouldn’t start your slant with an entire can of ether. Who knew?!
Go ahead and refer to my tear down video on this engine, because there was actually nothing wrong inside this engine but a slightly loose timing chain and one damaged piston. Kinda weird but yeah. Anyway, the #5 or #6 rod going through the block is a classic. Haha.
Thinking it’s plugged solid? That would be a new one for me. Well, on a classic, anyway. I’ve seen plenty of plugged cats on more modern junk. Anyway, it’s getting the Sawzall treatment either way.
Shared A body weirdness ‘67-76, but extremely noticeable on the Duster due to the quarter panel design. We will be solving the problem a different way - with wheels and tires.
This will be WAY more fruitful than just attempting to get that slant 6 working right. Also, I am hoping and praying that the body stays just as is - a very nice survivor, beige and brown just like a little old lady slant 6 Dart driving grandma would have intended.
I’m a Holley guy through and through. Those carbs are complete junk. Best 4bbl ever made for a small block is a 4180c off of a mustang or a 351w. Set up perfect. Just drill so it can be adjusted
I’m not. In fact, I’ve recently come to the realization that I strongly dislike Holleys. The gas always wants to be on the outside of them. Always. They have their place - on straight line performance cars, in a double pumper flavor. Anything other than that? Make mine an AVS2, please. (A classic Carter / Edelbrock is fine too.) It takes me moments to tune and I lose zero gas everywhere. No bowl gaskets to fail. Or pump gasket to fail. Or bowl screw seals to fail. Or needle / seat o rings, or adjuster gaskets. It’s just simple, and for a regular street car, it’s the best. Now, multiple enthusiasts have said that the Carter / Edelbrock is garbage and I need to throw them all in the scrap pile in favor of Holleys. I don’t think they understand the low horsepower world I live in. Haha. But, as always, your mileage may vary - and to each his own.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I wouldn't say edelbrock is junk. both companies have their strengths and weakness. Holley in KY works much better than most edelbrocks. may be the air. On Fords they work better. on GM its always edelbrock. Mopar has always been either or but I prefer Holley. the holley 2bbl and 1bbl carbs are complete junk typically.
Gonna be a nice build, worse part on that car is those stupid 5 mph bumpers. Your Sea Ray is nice looking boat. Never seen a hard top in Rhode Island waters.
I’ve gotten that impression. Haha. If the stars align and I end up with all of the stuff to do that… I will, but I’ll be saying that it’s a bad idea the whole time.
I would mess with your age rings, every time I buy a used car I order up replacement brake and/or clutch pedal pads - cuz I hate when they look worn, and they are quite cheep So that’s what trunk floors looked like, not recognizeable without rust
Will you accept my challenge? Back in WW2 they stuck 2 motors together, meshed the flywheels and stuck them in a tank. I challenge you to stick 2 225 slant 6’s together. A slant 12?
I can’t begin to tell you how many hours of my life that should’ve been spent on something else have been dedicated to considering how to stick two (or more) slants together… back in WW2, Chrysler stuck *five* flathead sixes together and called it a tank engine. What a party that was.

I just want to gap the hell out of people with an engine designed so long ago. Also a guy at work would have an aneurism if i made it work so now i really want to.
Gonna be fun to watch !
7:40 👀👀🏁🏁 ".....and ruining all the air" lol. Looking forward to this for sure.
Be careful Greta is watching 😂😂😂😂😂
Wow is that a solid dart, has one of the sketchiest slant sixes I've seen though. This project is going to be great, really looking forward to you putting this one together, It's going to be a "Super Dart"! I've got an A body that needs a lot of help, so I'm looking for some ideas for it.
Super excited to watch this build!!!!!!!!
It's the same colour as my '77 Aussie Valiant. Ah, great memories.
Look forward to the upcoming videos on t he build keep up the good work bud
👍
To quote a classic; It looks like the visualization of a dad get up in the morning sound.
It needs a big block and a new name like Brian.
The 408 stroker will give it big block power without the added weight and added clearance nightmare of a big block in an A-body.
Tampa! I live in lakeland!!
😅 really good chance there will be snow this year…
Hi Donny. I have been kicked out of Lakeland more than once. I'm quite thankful and surprised that Jamie has not blocked me. I wouldn't be surprised if Jamie warned you about me. Anyway... spectacular paint job on the Garbage Can 'Cuda! You crazy guys really cracked me up! More please!@@bigwrenchtech
Love your videos Jamie! I’m a die hard mopar fan too! I’ve got a 72 charger in my shop right now and I’m doing paint and body on it! My question is it won’t stay running! Only if I hold the key to the start position?
Ballast resistor died. That or a wiring or key switch problem - but the resistor is by far the most likely.
I put my settings for all notifications on your channel!
Awesome! Thanks! More updates on this coming soon.
Al bundy wants his dodge back
Al called it his Dodge but it was actually a Plymouth Duster
I have a 74 with the slant 6. If you block the hose that goes from the valve cover to the carburetor you should get a tremendous improvement in drive ability. Best to use a bolt that blocks the hose.
…the crankcase breather hose? You kinda need crankcase vapors to go somewhere. Or are you talking about the PCV valve? You kinda need that too. I’m confused by this.
Yes it is the crankcase breather hose. The more I think about it if you cap it off I think it should be capped and connected to the carburetor and not the crankcase. I hope this helps.
@@DeadDodgeGarageMaybe if you pressurize the crank case, it helps make the blow by from the pistons not so bad🤔🤪
@@gbrads Don't those just connect to the air cleaner?
@@gbrads I don't think blocking the crankcase breather is a good idea, and I don't really understand how it could make an appreciable difference in the slant's performance. Crankcase pressure needs to be vented somewhere, or it will figure out how to vent itself through every gasket in the engine. The PCV valve will handle a good bit of this, but especially with excessive blow-by like found in this poor slant, it's probably not going to do enough. You can switch to an atmospheric breather, but again, I don't know that it will make any noticeable difference in performance.
That's going to be a beautiful car
Sweet MERCY ‼️‼️

I do like those 73 & 74

Sounds like a nice project.
It runs like the over 200k choice. Thanks!
Love your channel man!
I had a 318 auto 74 dart sport. Same tan color
Plz do a short of country roads. Epic moment when you legit hit the high notes. APPLAUSE!
Haaahaha. I should do that.
Had a 1972 duster with 340 v8 .. 35 years later and I still miss that car 😞
Pretty cool cars
I had a 74 dart swinger this exact color !
I used to have a ‘73 Swinger that color!
Yes! There were several different “Dodges” used, and they are all actually Dusters. It’s very entertaining.
Smart move talking him out of EFI good video
That guy has some style
Love It..................
Cool that it was his Uncle's car & can now dial it up to 11!
It’s not granny green! A magnum and some new interior parts and you have my dream daily. I see we both enjoy the company of a Snap-On man way too much.
My Snap On guy retired so not so much anymore 😅 but yes. It’s going to be awesome!
my '75 Dart Sport had the fold down rear seat and the roll open sun roof. 318 three on the floor
Nice! I don’t remember what they called the “Space Duster” option on the Dart Sport. But the fold down back seat is cool.
my answer to anything that doesn't have a big block..... put a stroker small block 408 in it...
My Dad bought a brand new '72 Dart in that color, and said the color was called Light gold.
I have a 73 challenger pretty much that color they call it honey gold...... OK!
My bad, the more I looked at the body color, the more I realized my dad's '72 Dart in Light Gold was actually a different shade- kinda more like the door that's a different shade than the rest of the body. Anyway- it it what it is = Pus Yellow...lol
We had Plymouth duster window wash fluid pump on floor
Yep. At least three of my Darts and my Demon have had that feature.
So cool that you get paid to do this!
I know! It’s ridiculous.
Cool looking just needs a 8 i like the slant but that car is too heavy for it
Awesome!!
My first car was a 73 dart swinger in the same color with a slant six I will always regret selling that thing!
It wasn’t my first, more like my 4th or 5th, but I also had a ‘73 Swinger that color during some of my formative years.
I had a 74 Plymouth gold duster for 20 years
My first car was a 1975 Sky Blue Duster with the good old 318 slant six. I beat the daylights out of it and she kept running.
Wait a second… that’s not a thing
Pretty cool cars, there are lots of them to be found in Mexico still.
There is a story behind the use of the narrow rear track axle. Have you heard about it?
The width of the A body axle never changed. The track of the front end was widened along with the front frame rails during the ‘67 redesign, and disk brakes push the front wheels out a little bit further, but the rear was never changed. That’s the story I know.
@@DeadDodgeGarage that’s pretty much the story. The B-van has a similar story for its rear axle on the one tons.
In baby shit yellow-brown. Perfect for a sleeper build!
Damn right!
I thought it was "Vomit Beige". Maybe that was what Plymouth called it, haha!
That's an impressive steam train impression right there. Please tell me that the owner is keeping the beige and brown?!
At least for now, it stays as it is!
What’s going on with that 64 galaxie?
Perfection!
It's getting closer. Prepping for the 2024 "Southern Classic"
Wow, at least he's staying with the torsion bar front suspension.
I wouldn’t have been onboard for a coil conversion. The torsion bars are just about the best thing about these cars! One of them, anyway.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I agree Jamie.
Good solid low buck transportation that could survive a teenager's neutral drops on Friday night lol. BC Hydro $500 auction price. Car would last 10 years with little maintenance. Just keep a spare ballast resistor in the trunk...
That's going to be fun when dun.....😎
Here in SoCal, we don't rust cars out, we wear them out...
Looking at that car, what was "sport" about it back in the day? Love Chrysler lol
The roofline. Haha.
I love base utilitarian economy with just enough gilded lilly trim to seem superfluous :-) I don't know why?
I think you needed Donny there to help push that beast into the garage 🤣
I think you’re absolutely right. Haha. He did offer to help in another comment. If he has to fly out here every time I need help pushing a car, this is going to get expensive 😅
@@DeadDodgeGarage Haha perhaps we need to relocate then 😂
They used to be plentiful in the day. Nice dart
Just wondering. Can the " Beak Nose" be swapped out? That is a nice car except for that :-) Regards from Ody Slim!
Of course it can - but that’s way too much work. Haha.
I actually like the beak nose. Not as nice as the 71-72 Demon front I admit, but the beak nose is fine. I would just hit the grille with flat black paint. A blacked out grille really helps the beak nose.
cool car, I'd be tempted to paint it brown and use an old rag as a gas cap just like Al Bundy's
I had a 73 with 340 4speed
I had a 67 valiant that wouldn't quit
Wow I never seen a blown up slant 6
I have seen a couple… and several others barely hanging on. I sent a rod through the side of one once, but that was operator error. It turns out you shouldn’t start your slant with an entire can of ether. Who knew?!
AL Bundy´s Dodge!!!
Very similar. Haha.
Lookin forward to Apeness on this
I saw a video on vgg same car and engine the distributor was slammed into the wiper motor
Yeah… that’s like a him problem…
I would shut it down before the last rod goes screaming thru the block into the starter. Ask me how I know.😅
Go ahead and refer to my tear down video on this engine, because there was actually nothing wrong inside this engine but a slightly loose timing chain and one damaged piston. Kinda weird but yeah. Anyway, the #5 or #6 rod going through the block is a classic. Haha.
Exhaust shot
Thinking it’s plugged solid? That would be a new one for me. Well, on a classic, anyway. I’ve seen plenty of plugged cats on more modern junk. Anyway, it’s getting the Sawzall treatment either way.
Get That Car
…me? But I have a Demon
Duster weirdness. The rear wheel track is narrower than the front. A b body diff will fix that.
Bingo!
Agreed. I love that boat! I didn’t get it out at all this year 😭
A lot of viewers would like to see a 2wd Dakota 4.7 to 5.9 swap. Well, at least one viewer.
I’ve gotten that impression. Haha. If the stars align and I end up with all of the stuff to do that… I will, but I’ll be saying that it’s a bad idea the whole time.
Yeah. I'll stop now. Do enjoy your videos. Informative and entertaining.
I would mess with your age rings, every time I buy a used car I order up replacement brake and/or clutch pedal pads - cuz I hate when they look worn, and they are quite cheep
So that’s what trunk floors looked like, not recognizeable without rust
I know… it’s a rare day I see an A body that has all that metal, seam sealer and factory paint there
It's in the Studebaker's parking spot. So strange
Dude it just seems wrong.
