Space Marine Vexilla Conversion

- In this video, I am going to show you how to convert your space marines to be holding a Vexilla in their hands, as opposed to their backpack. For this, all you are going to need is a MK 3/4/6 tactical squad, a close combat weapon hand (the power sword hand works just fine) and some 1.5mm brass rod.

I miss the old motif of the banners-on-backpack from the earlier editions, i remember so many of those since my dad painted up those classic marines as Dark Angels lol.
It really is a classic 40k look. Did he have the ones that came with the sheet of stickers to make the banner itself?
@@AmnioticlyTanked I'm pretty sure he had the stickers, but i'm not sure if the models were metal or plastic, I never got to hold them since I was pretty young at the time. I think this would've been around mid-to-late 4th edition if that helps.
Still, those models definitely inspired me even if I didn't learn what 40k was until 9th edition had just come out. Mighty fighting 1st all the way.
I still do back banners and I even still have some of the old sticker ones

A simple yet effective conversion, very clean work.
Those are the best kind of conversions in my book. Give your models a unique flair, but are not too crazy or require hundreds of dollars worth of bits.

I followed the guide on the Mkiii kit with a vondictor spear worked really well
The hand held vex just looks so much better then on the back, that and they are so flimsy on the back

I didn't even think of the durability issue when making this video, but I guess a lot of people have trouble with the vexilla snapping off the backpack?
If you like the backpack look though, you can certainly do this same conversion and just drill a hole into the top of the back pack as well to help with it!

If you don't want to scrape the hands off the bolter you could put a bolt pistol in its place and glue a bolter from the Mk3 or 4 kit to a thigh to show it being stowed.
Very good point! I generally like to keep thinks off my models legs as I think they look cluttered, but a bolt pistol would absolutely work here.
Looks great, thinking of doing something similar for a Legion herald consol upgrade whenever I get a chance but definitely will be applying these techniques when I do so.
Funny you mention that. I have a Cataphractii Herald video lined up for my next release and about half way through I realized that I'm pretty much making the same video again...

I'd have to give that one some thought as I am not quite sure what bits I would use. Are you thinking line officers like sergeants or centurions? Or Praetors?
@@AmnioticlyTanked I am especially interested in officers at the Centurian and Lieutenant level of structure. Mid-rank line officers involved in company command.
And I am more interested in the Mk. III bit than the Imperial fist bit :)
Might have to make a scan of my vexilla so i can produce these as a 3D model in the future...
would be far easier than doing this ever time.

lovely conversion. I know it's an obvious answer to my question but how did you get the helmet to look good and not slightly indented or something when getting rid of the mould line?, I've tried on 2 heads to far and cant quite get them looking correct.
What are you using to remove the mold line? I just took my X-acto blade and quickly ran it down the seam. To be fair though there are a few on mine that do look a little weird where I took too much off. I kinda took the approach of not worrying too much as no one but me will even notice.
If you really want to get them right though, you can find flexible sanding sticks on amazon which should help maintain the curvature of the helmet.

Thank you. Up to this point, every conversion I've done will be going into either a iron warriors pride of the legion force or blood angels army im working on.
My current thought process is to do a mini series on building each of those armies both from a game play and hobby point of view, but im still trying to figure out how to do that, or if thats something people would be interested in. I short I feel like I've gotten my format for tutorials down, but I want to try out other forms of content and when I do, these models will certainly be shown

Any advice on how to convert the older Vexilla from the old Mk IV kit?
Pretty much the same thing just cut out the entire cross bar at the bottom and and the upright support been in the center and replace both with brass rod.
can you put what type of tools your using ?

i commented on one of your videos before but sculpting the left hand on the bolters with new upgrades and torsos with legs was a big turn off for me for the new mk6 kit. mk3 and mk4 in plastic is supperior in that regard or rather in every because they are still tall
Oh man I know, I have like 40 of them still on sprue that I really just don't want to build. I might be showing my age a bit, but I'd actually prefer they went back to the really old way where neither hand was sculpted on the weapon!
@@AmnioticlyTanked yes that was the best marines imho because i put their bolters on the back. there is one way tho and its to buy the forge world ones where they have the both versions of hands scultped and not sculpted on weapons

@@AmnioticlyTanked basically remove the ba symbols. Add a conversation world sword and a jet pack. That’s about it. I want to make him unique but idk where to go from here
@@tristand7722 there are some really sweet bits from the palatine blade kit that could work pretty well. The shoulder pads spring to mind, as well as some of the helmets would look great.
There are a couple of cape bits out there that could work as well. Not sure how you feel about capes and jump packs, but that could be a good way to add a place for decal work or other things that make him stand out.
I tried making mine with the flag bearer from one of those stormcast eternals and it came out pretty good.... Wish I know how to erase sigmar's face from the flag

I'm actually working on de-dark angeling the dark angel terminator kit right now for a video on heresy indominus terminators which involves removing a ton of plastic details. So there might be some helpful tips in there.
What kit is the banner from though, I might have some ideas depending on how wavy it is
