The Engineering of Droplets and their Formation in a Commercial Inkjet Printer
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 тра 2019
- Bill describes how the minimization of surface area and inertia compete to form droplets. He then shows how engineers use this knowledge to create precisely-sized droplets in a commercial inkjet printer -- the type used to print expiration dates on food packages.

Always a clear cut explanation. You are the real engineering guy
straight to the point. no bullshit. only relevant pre information.
Just an FYI, Bill updated his website just today actually! In a nutshell, he's been writing a book which will be the basis for a new series of videos, but unfortunately family life and of course the current pandemic has prevented him from actually getting to work on these videos.
I miss him 😢😢
Nice.

Oh, he is human. My bad, I thought he was a robot given his immense knowledge and understanding of world.
@@engineerguyvideo you make such amazing content. Greetings from Peru
Thank you!
I'm always amazed how something that looks so simple is not only much more complex, but can require many decades if not centuries of research to achieve.
In fact if you look around yourself in a house youll notice that absolutely EVERYTHING that surrounds you is unbelievably complex and each little or big thing requires its own science and almost all life worth to create it... This is mind bogging...
Answers to questions I didn't know I wanted answered. Amazing as always!

How do u know
Hello Bill - It's been 3 years since your last video, and i know you're writing a book right now, but i just wanted to say - thank you for all the videos you've made, they infected me with the love of technology, love of learning new things, and love of engineering - thanks to which, i was able to fix a lot of things in my home myself with the knowledge you and others like you shared with me, and was able to create things myself too - from simple toys for my pet rats, to building a radio all by myself.
I don't live in a good country, but i will definitely try to save up for your book when it comes out. And i will keep trying to go to some kind of school to become an engineer, or even just a "simple" plumber, anyone who is able to create something as part of their job, and is challenged by new situations and problems.
Your content inspired me, and i'm sure it inspired hundreds more. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything you do.
RIP i heard you died!
Wish he would comeback!!

Good to see you back Bill! Great video!
Everyone loves the way you break these concepts down for your videos. You're truly a fantastic teacher.
How are you sure *EVERYONE* loves it? I'm sure *MOST* people do, but not everyone. I'm sure there's even some dickhead out there who absolutely hates it. You shouldn't lie on the Internet man, Jesus can see everything you say, and he'll send you straight to Hell for lieing. Be sure to confess to your local priest, you never know when you'll kick it for good, and I'm sure you'd rather be in heaven than the firey depths of Hell.

A series of four ~15 minute videos on the engineering method. The are a companion to my book The Things We Make that comes out on March 21, 2023 ISBN 978-1728215754.
Videos like this make me realise that we take many things in life for granted. Many everyday objects are actually the results of years and years of scientific development and research.

Oh my goodness, a new video from the engineer guy? Is it true? This is truly a blessed day
I worked at a company that used a stream of droplets to manufacture high-end microchips via photolithography. Molten tin was propelled across a vacuum chamber using high pressure gas. A piezo electric element vibrated the tip of a quartz nozzle to form droplets with proper frequency, speed, size and spacing. Each droplet was tracked as it flew and at the right moment a 30000 watt CO2 laser focused on the droplet and turned it into a flash of light with a very small wavelength. The light was captured and reflected by mirrors to a machine that used it to etch silicon wafers. The light enables finer resolution for more transistors per square millimeter.
We need the engineering guy back. He is the Mr.Rodgers of our time now. Please come back.
I'm not an engineer and never really thought about droplets before, but wow, I genuinely found this video fascinating. Thank you!
I hope you are doing well during these times!

Man I was just going to say, Ink Jet Printers. The Videojet printers I work with use a crystal that vibrates at 60,000hz, thus making 60,000 drops per second. There's an LED light flashing at the same rate allowing one to actually see the drop formation using a loupe. After that, the charge tunnel and deflection plate work similarly to a CRT.
Miss you, man. Hope you and your family are doing well

It's been 3 years since the last video, so I think it's safe to assume the channel has been abandoned. That's fine, priorities change, I get it. Wow, this is a channel I don't think I have seen in my sub box for a long while. Am very happy to see this.
What a fantastic exposé of the matter. Never taught that much engineering went into those ink jet printer!
I work with high-speed inkjet printers used in several industries with solvent and water based ink in letter mail automation. The ones we use to apply barcodes (the vertical bars in fluorescent and black you see on your mail) can apply 4,327 bars per second. With variably charged ink, a piezo nozzle, and a high voltage source, it's amazing to watch it work even if like me you went to school to learn to work on them.
Awesome to see your videos again, hope youre having a great time
