  • In this video we visit Craigieburn station; the terminus of the Craigieburn Line in Melbourne's northern suburbs. We start the video at the station platforms where we mostly see Comeng trains arriving and departing the station, but a lone Siemens train also makes an appearance. We also see some V/Line services passing through the station, including some Sprinter DMU's on Seymour services, N Class locomotive-hauled trains on Shepparton services, and a standard gauge Vlocity DMU heading up towards Albury.
We then head outside to the bus interchange where we see Kastoria and Dysons buses. Craigieburn is served by routes 390, 525, 528, 529, 532, 533, 537 & 544. I originally filmed some buses here back in March 2019, however there has been some changes since then. First up was the introduction of route 525 between Craigieburn and Donnybrook via Mickleham in December 2019, which saw Dysons buses serve Craigieburn station for the first time. Then in October 2021 route 390 between Craigieburn and Mernda via Wollert was introduced. Most recently in April 2022, several bus routes in Craigieburn received significant service boosts; with routes 528, 529, 533 & 537 upgraded to operate at least every 20 minutes on weekdays, which may not seem like much but considering Melbourne's glacial attempt at any bus network reform, is still one of the most significant service upgrades to buses in outer suburban Melbourne in recent years.
The majority of buses in Craigieburn are operated by Kastoria which operates a varied fleet, including some of the few Bustech bodied buses in the state, and some older Mercedes Benz buses on route service. They're also one of the few bus operators in Melbourne not to have a single bus in the orange PTV livery. Considering this, combined with the recent service upgrades; Craigieburn station is a great place to do some bus spotting. Buses seen include Mercedes Benz O405NH's, Mercedes Benz O500LE's, Volvo V7RLE's, Volvo B8RLE's, Scania K310UB's, and others.
Craigieburn station opened on the 22nd July 1872 on Victoria's north east line. For many years Craigieburn was just a small country served by regional rail services. However starting in the 1980's Craigieburn started to grow with new residential subdivisions being built. By the early 2000's Craigieburn essentially became a suburb of Melbourne; fully enroached in Melbourne's urban sprawl. This necessitated the extension of Melbourne's metropolitan rail network to Craigieburn, with the line from Broadmeadows to Craigieburn being electrified in 2007. Craigieburn station was rebuilt across two subsequent years to cater for the electrification, with platform 2 having been rebuilt in 2007, and platform 1 having been rebuilt in 2009.
Fun fact: the original plans for Craigieburn station was for a three platform station, with platforms linked by a pedestrian underpass. However the scope was reduced to a simpler two platform station linked with only a pedestrian crossing to save costs. However the design of the station does include provision for a third platform to be built between platform 2 and the ticket office. See: wongm.com/2015...
