While rivals have been quickly building their electric car ranges, Ford has been a little slow out of the blocks. The Mach E is an impressive but expensive car which has been hobbled in the UK by supply issues and eye-watering price rises.
The new Explorer will change that. It will be built in Europe and is aimed right at the most popular type of car in the UK - the medium sized SUV. At 4.4 metres long, it’s almost exactly the same length as the best-selling Nissan Qashqai.
If you are thinking the Explorer name is familiar, it’s been used before on a big gas-guzzling American SUV which was briefly sold in the UK a couple of decades ago. It wasn’t a huge success here, but it had a moment of fame in Jurassic Park. This new model makes that old SUV look like a real dinosaur, with an all-electric powertrain instead of a big V6.
Underneath the Ford-designed body are the mechanical bits borrowed from Volkswagen’s electric cars. That means it shares the motor - or motors if you opt for the four-wheel-drive version - and battery packs with cars like the ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq. That means the Explorer offers up to 335bhp and all-wheel drive, up to 335 miles of range, and 10-80 per cent charge in 25 minutes using DC fast-charging up to 170 kW.
In terms of size (and expected price) the Ford sits in between the ID.3 and ID.4/Enyaq. It will also put a Ford spin on the tech and connectivity.
Join Tom as he takes a look around Ford’s all-new electric SUV. Will the new Explorer be on your shortlist or will you opt for something else? As always, we love to hear your opinions, so get typing in the comments below.

I think it looks great. I wish it was a ground up Ford, instead of a VW with those window controls and turn signal controls. I can imagine why they thought that was a good idea to begin with.
It’s a great looking car, but Ford need to price it right. Needs to start under £40k
I like it, but probably too expensive.
Very interesting looks. Had to smile about the "squircle" steering wheel. Remember the first Austin Allegro with its "quartic" wheel? People hated it and it was quietly dropped. Maybe it will happen here too.
Quartic steering wheels are on a lot of cars nowadays. This isn't specifically new to this car. In combination with flat bottom wheels they've been in common use since the late 2010s.
It's to do with the change to adaptive power steering. Square wheels are much less inconvenient now people have to thread the wheel less, it helps to make the information on the digital Speedo easier to read as well
Ugly front end, should of been called the Scorpio mk2.
I had a 1973 Allegro with a quartic steering. I swapped it out for a circular one within a few days of ownership. Sadly that isn't an option these days now that steering wheels contain airbags and numerous other complications.
The Allegro was way ahead of its time 😀
Like the overall 👀 of this. Like very much the innovative moving screen as I am somewhat put off by having a giant tablet in my face while driving. The further away from my sight lines to the road the better.
Nice looking car, shades of a C5 Crossover from the side. Not so sure about the gimmicky movable screen (that sound when it moves!) and the shared bits from VW but definitely a lot more character than an ID3/4. As always pricing will be the issue as I suspect what was shown today will be well North of £50k.
Had the same feeling. C5 Aircross feelings and terrible sounding Sync Move
The sound it just a few clicks as there is more than 1 position to put it in to suit yourself - and that will be handy to keep reflections at bay.
After having driven the 2019 model ice ford explorer in america, I sure hope they've fixed at least some of the serious issues that make it uncomfortable to even sit in, let alone drive. The chunky a pillars and far away windshield, combined with the small side windows spaced so far away from the driving position make it difficult to position in the lane and when parking. The power seat that only has rear height adjustment, but not tilt. The base of the a pillar encroaching into the footwell RIGHT where you would rest your left foot. (right foot for you brits probably) The sharp interior plastics, particularly on the steering wheel, that can eat into your fingers depending on where you rest your hands when you drive.
Looking at the interior shots of that area in this video, it seems they haven't fixed any of those problems I've listed, and there are many others.
Initial impression is not bad. At 1st glance it has a resemblance to an Evoque, or is that just me lol. I agree with other comments on, is the budget so tight that they cant have permanent window buttons for all the windows and if anyone has a dog like we do, then the parcel shelf never sees the car anyway, ever!
Don’t like the car , another expensive SUV, but I do enjoy your presenting style Tom .. keep up the good work
So so so happy that it uses a mostly (with the exception of some components) Ford interior, especially the infotainment/climate setup that in VWs is horrible. The current Transit Connect (That is a restyled Caddy) uses a completely VW interior with all it's flaws, so I'm really glad to see this uses a proper sync system, seemingly from the new Ranger.
It's smaller than the current Explorer, more the size of the Edge. Not what I want, or need. For the US market, I've seen a starting price of about $50,000, but no idea if that one will be like this one.
Still waiting on the US version.
This one is really nice, especially from the driver's seat. I wish it had an MPV form factor instead of SUV, but this is the song of our times. Touch controls ugh, nay. Let's see the street price. Competing with the Kia EV5, I assume.
Hmmmm, a new Ford Exploder. One would hope, for Ford's sake, that this electric one is a good deal more reliable than the ICE one
Is it really that different in relation to so many other electric cars, don't think so. It was a nice presentation with lots of relevant information. Would i buy one, depends totally on price.
Looks alright
Drum brakes behind?
People keep saying this, but there's new regs coming wrt brake dust emissions. Drums neatly side step that issue
Glad they remove that physical dial on the screen, not a fan of that on the Mustang Mach-E.
Car makers need to stop making such low ground clearance EVs just because of the battery pack weight. What Ford did to Explorer is just plain sad.
Amazing ❤
Is 😂❤this a case of fighting for survival from ford.? It’s always hard to know if the bluff front really looks that bad until we see it in the flesh. At least they made some effort with the VW interior. Price is going to be the deciding point with this sticking plaster Ford.
Who would like to contact me.?

I am not watching another video with this presenter, Electrifying.
Another ID 4
Best looking Ford yet.
Sell this in the US.
Nice exterior but dreary, no imagination interior.
I’m happy they chose fords own system, but that front is an eyesore the logo is far to big a looks just bland , it really should offer grill sections especially on the top spec , ford europe please please offer a lighter interior to eu and U.K. market as well
Aerodynamics as a concrete block
not a fan of its snout, doesn't look very aerodynamic, in addition the estimated price is still far too expensive, I won't be buying an electric car until they're around the £20k mark . ..and don't call me Mark 🤣
As an owner of a Mach E I want to warn potential buyers about the atrocious drop in value of a Ford EV. I bought mine in July 2021 and Ford offered me £27k for it today. To buy a new Mach E now Ford want £50k How do you like them apples? On top of this the Govt will demand 20% of the sale price as a grab-back of their initial tax concessions. How about these even worse apples! Stay with fossil fuels is my conclusion.
Sounding like an excellent value nearly new buy in that case
@@jamesecroucher Except that I wont be giving it away, nosireebub.
Another big fat SUV. Not interested.
VW literally make the worst electric cars. Who would have thought it.
I'm sorry it's not a true Ford jusy a reskinned and badged VW. Makes it a no thanks for me.
Tesla has too many advantages. Better range, better software, 20 year warranty on the motor, charging network. Better safety technology.
Hi bro
Overall I like it. But like with all EV’s it’s not affordable for ordinary people especially with a cost of living crisis.
We also need to address the elephant in the room. Charging network and what the batteries are made of.
I bet the one shown today as top spec is over £50k. Just ridiculous and that also applies to ICE cars now the pricing has gone mad.
@@ISuperTed Why do you need to the top spec one Ian?
Brilliant looking car. Well done Ford. Very classy looking vehicle.
Nice design, but definitely doesn’t match up with what constitutes a Ford Explorer. It should have a third row and be semi off-road worthy. The side rectangular sticker designs near the upper rear look hideous!!! That definitely is a Volkswagen cue. Overall, that Explorer will work for the Europeans, but may encounter sales difficulties in the USA 🇺🇸. We expect more for the Explorer here in the USA 🇺🇸. We already have the Mach E that can fit five. It will probably be rebadged as a Ford Edge which it definitely compares to in the 🇺🇸. Nonetheless, it is a good start at opening the electric vehicle market in Europe.
I'm not sure why an EV needs an ice scraper given the pre heating capability.
So you can help your neighbours with old-fashioned ICE cars?
The title of this video is a bit negative for no real reason. Looks like an impressive car to me
Yep, a bit click bait but decent review overall.
In a way, reminds me of the comeback of the MG brand. In this, I mean it feels like it's totally disconnected as a product to previous models and the rest of the current range. By disconnected I don't mean in the sense that new design language can mark a departure from old, rather watching this video it doesn't look or feel Ford. If Ford wanted to reinvent themselves, then I'd say they have nailed the brief. At the same time, it's a bold move to stick two fingers up to what you've been doing for the past century and your existing customer base and launch something that bears negligible resemblance to what people know. For MG, the reinvention was good and necessary. The brand was resurrected from the ashes, and for a while was a bit of a joke before it punched higher and saw the success it is having now. Ford is not a dead brand though, and as the establishment has a lot more to lose. Will the move pay off? I can't say. This is only one car out of a range. What I do know is, your average person who is your average Ford buyer can afford a Fiesta or Focus. Ford is killing off those models. They won't be able to afford this. But that's alright, as Ford want to change their customer base, right? Well, I can only wish them good luck.
To me, it looks very much like some of the American Fords, not the Euro ones
What's with the 2 windows buttons and heptic touch sensitive BS buttons on the steering wheel? Were VW giving containers loads of them away to Ford?
I hired a VW Golf for a holiday last month with these type of buttons and OMG they are a nightmare. Ditch them VW and anyone else!
Feels very lazy. How have they gone from the Mach E, to this?
Your negative criticisms were a bit petty.....
I think it looks alright.
Al most a bit like Fisker Ocean
I am finding myself loving this. The moveable screen might also be to reduce glare in summer?
Entry level 55KWH battery pack is a bit of a joke, rated at just under 220 miles realistically probably will only do 170-180 miles and in winter would be even worse. Ford better not charge insane amounts otherwise they’ve definitely lost the plot.
VW aren't going to share all the toys with Ford, are they?😉
The boxy shape won’t help either, it does not look efficient/aerodynamic which will also reduce the range.
It makes very little difference on the range as people will opt for the more range reliability of the Niro or kona on their new larger platform for less money and more kit.
Things I hate are, ,stupid 21” wheels and 19”s for the lowest spec, it’s not an off roader so design the vehicle better and drop the sizes to 16” to 18” and maximise range efficiency, borrowing the sled from VW ok, why take the window switches that everyone has given their hate to, daft gimmicks like the screen wasting space because it moves, zero front trunk when Ford have made the F150 Lightening with its mega frunk just shows utter laziness from the design team.
This Explorer could and should have been an absolute sensation like the F150 but from every video I’ve seen so far it’s just a disappointing version of something that could have pulled a huge market share.
@@6ettinold. Ford and VW are working together on sharing technology and vehicles. Working together helps reduce R&D and manufacturing costs. Some research will explain their connection
I agree with the comments about Battery/Range etc. Ford has got a real chance here to produce a great vehicle with a fantastic range, but I worry whether they will follow through and make sure all the negatives that are being flagged up are ironed out before production starts proper.
I also love the looks of this Europe Explorer EV. I sincerely hope the American Explorer EV looks similar if not exactly the same. Ford has to make the American version aerodynamic if they want the range too be in 300 mile + area. I hate waiting another 1.5 years for this to happen here in the USA, but I prefer this look to the Porsche Macan EV and the Tesla Y! Keep up the good work Ford😊
The last Focus was a design disaster, this explorer EV is a is a styling success, futuristic and practical without the excessive over designed body creases fashion disaster.
I quite like the look of this car and it is about the right size for my requirements. I like the screen arrangement although I would prefer more physical buttons. I don't really care that there are only 2 window switches as I can't remember the last time I used the rear window controls on my existing car.
I suppose they've been stuck with VW platform restrictions. This is pathetic.typical bean counter lets trim $1 off the price without regard to ergonomics . I think this is a nice looking car but Ford have already indicated this is a dead end technolgy wise.
Got to admire Ford's naming strategy. They've given up on small affordable cars to mobilise the masses. However, if they do build a small affordable car, they can call it the Model T
I have never in my life seen Ford product looking so good and supplying the market for what it demands as sales of all its new product testify, the Maverick a classic example, all their new product cannot meet demand.
Great Design by a romanian 🇷🇴 Guy Liviu T.😎🙌
He's obviously never had an original Juke that had that type of parcel shelf and everyone criticised it. It's also got the rubbish VW interior crap.
Tom tells us he's actually had three Jukes. But forgot.....
An electric car priced at £40,000 is not within the budget of the average person, making it unlikely that they would consider purchasing one. Until electric cars become more affordable, the majority of people will continue to buy used cars that are within their budget.
I find it very odd to take the nameplate from America synonymous with (3rd row SUV) and to make it the same size as the rogue sport. Obviously 3rd rows are much smaller in the EU and UK but i would have expected a new nameplate
Just another oversized "Sports Utility Vehicle", that is not any more suitable for sports, no more utility than my electric bill and no more a vehicle than something that might have been designed for actual use in the real world.
No bloody wonder that MG can sell as many 4s and 5s as it makes, while sales of other manufacturers' wares are starting to tail off. Only Tesla, with enormous price reductions seems to be holding.
It's not that big really. Same size as a Focus.
@@Electrifyingcom But it is a lot taller. That height affects all parts of the driving experience.
I like it
Thankfully clean and handsome look.
I hope they improve it and make it in full size. Not just crossover. Too small for me 😭
It looks OK for people who like the chunky crossover appearance, but there is nothing to make it stand out. With Electric Cars still being a relatively new product, at least to the mass market, new products need to move the game on in some way and this doesn't. Using the batteries and motors from cars that have already been on the market for a couple of years is ridiculous in an emerging market, it's just Ford trying to cash in with minimal effort. I appreciate that part sharing is almost a necessity in the current car market, if you want to be competitive, but this is the wrong segment to do it in. If you are not innovating in the EV market, you may as well just not bother. The only positive thing I can say about it is that it adds choice.
Such a shame Ford using Volkswagen bits. This isn't really a Ford then is it. Hate Volkswagen. Deceitful horrible brand. Won't by the Ford.
I like the Explorer even more than the Volkswagen derivatives.
Boring! Fat brick! It’s Horrible. Why are all manufacturers following the suv route? The size of it could have created a S-max type MPV. Far more useful than Yet Another (non) Sports (non ) Utility Vehicle. BTW: A. Squircle!? Allegro quartic, surely?
Tesla model Y 😂
Yes it has 300hp only with rear wheel drive !
The most popular Model Y long range Dual Motor has 507 hp a bit more that your ford 😂🥱
Ford is not a competitor to the Tesla Model Y why even mention it ?
Tesla is in a quite different league 🤦
Excellent styling bringing their US heritage styling into a contemporary European vehicle that’s refreshing and stands out in a good way from all others. Very well done Ford. Now you’ve sorted the battery out so higher standard with the launch delay just get the pricing right to get the sales required.
I really like it
ford is an American company not british
Ford Europe has nothing to do with Ford USA. They have their own engine developpment and production in the UK and their own assembly and design site in Germany. The only US Model they sold for decades is the MachE and it isn't particularly successful. Ford lately announced they want their European cars to look "unapologethically American," which is a perfect recipe for bankruptcy. This seems to be the first step in this direction.
Thank you for calling to "artificial leather" instead of vegan leather. I hate how marketing is trying to convince us to pay a premium for cheaper materials are premium products. Also, fewer sound affects in the future.
I do not understand… why one would like to open and close rear windows from front all the time? Two buttons for windows are perfectly fine. It is also possible to operate all windows using only one button.
Most people who have lived with a VW ID or Cupra Born wouldn't agree.
I will soon inherit a Skoda Enyaq IV. Coming from a VW Tiguan (diesel) it looks absolutely huge and I cannot understand why they make that kind of car. Who wants a real family car with a big booth in a car that cannot even take you to the closest sea-side (400kms, I live in Madrid Spain where we don't really have public chargers). EVs only make sense in the city or to go to work daily -and having a charger at work or home or you are doomed, and in the city you need something small that can be parked easily. The same happens to this Explorer although it is a little smaller. BTW in Spain I think nobody inverts in chargers because not even the big electricity Companies believe in the EV. I also believe the EV is already dead, it might last 5 years more and then will be limited to small city cars. Good video, short, complete and understandable!
7:09 "all Explorers have a heat-pump", a year later it's a £1050 option on all versions.
Very negative/depressing reviewer. Very self satisfied with his ability to 'see through' the marketing language.
Every thief will smash his/her way through the games console to get to the cubbyhole on the off chance there is something there. So in reality it should always be left open. Being always left open make it a useless place to put valuables.
these vehicles are such junk ,enjoy being stuck youll see when power goes out cant get parts etc
Regarding to tech it is more modern than VW ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq. I will look forward to test drive it in Sweden later this year.
Why not polestar or volvo
It doesn’t have the WOW factor the ID3 had or the ID2 so they better do better with the PUMA EV - the colour is so boring - right that’s the negatives - the positives - I love your reviews love the late night radio calm voice ! The laptop hand bag box is a brilliant innovation as is the sliding screen though if a thief did get in the lock isn’t going to be issue the amount of damage to that screen they’ll cause will cost you more than phone you left behind - more cars need cameras all round like Tesla sentry mode and dash cams should be compulsory- the ID4 is quite boring so maybe it’s trying to compete with that !? I think the car we all waiting for on this platform is the ID2 the price is right - £35k plus cars are just too expensive for most
Top features of the car - console lights and speakers 😂 the auto industry is Dead
Nice work Ford. You really make me hate this car to the bone with just window switches. Kudos to you
Imagine VW's chagrin that Ford makes a better iD4.
Looks really good. Got my name down for first dibs. No one mentioins a frunk. Is there one?
How is anyone meant to know if they found the spot or lost it based on a mockup of a car that won't even be delivered until the end of the year at the very least? Few specs, no road test, no prices. Could be a complete lemon or the most satisfying car they've ever made for all anyone knows. One thing about Ford is they seem to have a shrinking presence in Europe and the fact that this car is built on a VW platform should be concerning to them.
Took my test in an Allegro with a 'square' wheel - awful. And they pinched the name Squircle from FIAT's Panda too..at least that had a round steering wheel.
Good looking car this though and, who'd have thought it, Ford seem to have stolen a march on VW with regard to interior quality and desirability...it's a Ford for goodness sake! They've 'out VW'd VW' so to speak, at least according to the reports.
Interesting that VW shared this platform with Ford. Given that perceived/actual interior quality was once a big selling point for VW, along with the fact that it's no longer a feature of their EV programme, they may have assisted in the creation of better selling model....for a rival.
Interesting times.
Bloody ugly,, main controls on a touch screen is completely useless....
Nice let help they don't have VW battery degradation problem
I do not like the front of the car, why not make use of the front for storage? Why VW parts?
The ratchet for the sync move sounds terrible!
We guess it has to be substantial to ensure it can't be forced open.
@@Electrifyingcom well, someone trying to force it open might need to deal with once in the car's life, moving it open and listening to that awful sounds is something you might have to do several times a day.
I would advise ford to change that
I am not sure about light bar just in front of your sight
Frunk? I'll be anxious to see it reviewed from behind the wheel on the road.
No frunk on the VW platforms I understand
Clever on the inside but boring on the outside. Come on Ford you can do better than this.
Haptic buttons?? Noooo!!!
The fake thumbnail number plate annoys me more than it probably should!
Bmw ix and a land rover had a little baby?🍼🍼🍼
It looks similar to the kit ev9. I feel they have copied others instead of being different, not a fan
Far too wide for UK roads and modern house garages.
I like it. Wish it was coming ro America.
I like it, far better design than the outgoing crossover, although the mild off-road capabilities must be nonexistent this time, making it a tarmac-only explorer.
It’s a re body of an ID4 but not quite the stylish Enyaq, inside the quality looks closer to the Enyaq, can’t understand why they copied the window switches from the ID4, Skoda didn’t in the Enyaq🤷🏻♂️
At the end of the Day it will come down to wether you prefer the Ford styling or the Skoda Enyaq because nobody is going to opt for the cheaper feeling ID4.
It's too chunky looking. Also, the boot is small. But I'll save further judgments until I see one in person. Good review!
great video! I especially liked your comment about jogging 🤣. Tom, pls be more prominent on this channel 👍
Why are you whispering?
I'm going to get one of these for the missus.
First thought? Too big, too bluff. IE: Too American.
Too fat
