I remember an old video (ten years ago?) and the guy (who was either American or Canadian) was asking why malls were failing in the US and were booming in the Philippines. And he said it boils down to one simple fact: Philippine malls have benches while most American malls do not. He extrapolated that American malls want visitors to come in and spend money, while Philippine malls want visitors to come in and hang out. It creates an atmosphere in American malls that if you're not buying anything, they want you to go and give up your "spot" for someone else who might be willing to spend some cash. Whereas in the Philippines, if you just want to come in and sit down and cool off from the heat it's okay. Hence the benches reference: you're welcome to spend time doing nothing, they even provide seating. I can't speak for the veracity of this observation having never been to the US but I have been to the "super malls" in Shanghai and unless it's restaurant or cafe, there was no seating there.

This makes sense 😂 When I first arrive here in the UK and it was drizzling, people were just like walking down the street like a normal day, no umbrealla or anything. Back home in the Philippines, people believe that rain can make you sick, that's why they were all away when it started to drizzle and yous two still there standing 😂
Omg this makes sense cause when we were getting a flight yesterday they were handing out umbrellas for the 30 second walk to the plane and it was drizzling. We were like ‘surely an umbrella is not necessary’ but now it makes sense!
