    WOW, you are so talented, your work is so beautiful!!!! I had someone give me a lantern and a couple days later I woke up to it all broke, maybe a person or a animal or it was just old, he had had it for 15 years and was tired of it. I would love some tips on fixing it. Thank you, have a great day! I'm 54 and finally got one I thought I would never have one, I loved it!!! Tammy

      Thank you! To fix stone, concrete, glass and ceramics I use waterproof wood glue, super glue or epoxy, I think the epoxy would be the best approach.

    Oh man is this fantastic. I live here in Japan and I have "rescued" quite a few stone/concrete lanterns but often with missing parts. Wow..now I know I can remake those pieces! The hardest part is the base. I have some massive lanterns and its difficult to decide how big to build the base.

      give me a day or so and I will. Mostly I buy the iron lanterns from flea markets and then put lights in them and put them in my yard. Its gotten a bit out of hand as I now have 35 or more lanterns outside. They are all on a timer and light up at dusk. I'll photograph the concrete ones when I can.

    I Like your reinforcing wire idea. I've been buying the cheap 16 foot cattle fencing panels that are galvanized and a quarter inch thick. I Cut them with a 4 inch grinder with a cut off wheel and get almost two dozen pieces out of a panel for $25.00.

      I use sandpaper to to finish the styrofoam, to fill the gaps I used just clay, and to sand the convrete I use diamond blades on an angle grinder and sand paper, as a releaser I used pork grease or engine oil, for casting I use 2 parts sand / 1 part cement / pp fibres and steel, to bond the pieces together I used 1 part cement / 1 part sand

    Here’s what I don’t get. I’m getting ready to make my own, bought cement that has sand already mixed in. Paul said this is what he used: cement and sand. But the bag states that cement and sand is for projects less than two inches thick! Thats not the case here! Shouldnt we add perlite, peat moss or someting? If anyone could help...ive been reading so much about cement and concrete my head hurts.

    • @pauliascau
      @pauliascau  6 років тому

      You can use gravel depending on the thickness of the project

    • @darkzq
      @darkzq 6 років тому +1

      Thats what I thought! I have used concrete, and its really heavy, as you know, and harder to make smooth shapes. I’ll probably go with a cement sand perlite mix, than apply a waterproof sealer, I’ll let you know.

    • @pauliascau
      @pauliascau  6 років тому +1

      For this lantern I made the roof mold from styrene foarn which I cut it with my hot wire foam cutter. This week I'm working on an other lantern which has a similar roof and I made my mold from plaster of paris I wll try to upload the video in 2 weeks and there you will see better how I made the roof

    How much water to concrete do you use??

    • @pauliascau
      @pauliascau  7 років тому

      I dont measure my water, but I dont put to much just enough so I can pour the concrete

      Paul Iascau's studio thanks for answering. i'm doing concrete casting in foam molds for a studio project, and have had a lot of trouble getting concrete to the right consistency (I've got pretty complex molds and it has to be poured in, not trowelled on). If you don't mind me asking more, how long does it take for your wetter mixes to cure and demold?

    • @pauliascau
      @pauliascau  7 років тому

      Catherine Chan I use quick set cement... in 24 hours I can demold it.... but its better to wait about 3 days

    is that coat hanger wire

    • @pauliascau
      @pauliascau  7 років тому

      No, it's like hanger wire, but it's actually mild steel wire which I buy at the spool from the hardware store and it cames in different gages

    • @leosuniverse
      @leosuniverse 7 років тому

      I need to get that I just found the hanger wire is hard to work with but also thought maybe not strong enough and also when I should use it vs when it's not needed

    • @pauliascau
      @pauliascau  7 років тому

      Mild steel it's easier to work with than the hager wire and because the mild steel is a softer metal it can move with the concret so the concrete doesnt crack. You have to use it at the preasure points, like on a frame you have to use it all around the frame. If you have other questions I'm happy to answer them. :)

      Thanks so much. I have this piece that keeps breaking in half but is fine done in plaster. I was even wondering about needing them in plaster since I'm new to using it.

      Youre welcome.If you are using plaster, instead of using wire try hemp fibers it works better in plaster. Look at this videos you will see me using hemp fibers when I make the roof molds: ua-cam.com/video/SsNGiS1Zk1M/v-deo.html

    Foarte TARE , nu imi vine sa cred ca la 0:40 este poliester (?) modelul respectiv, este poliester extrudat de ala mai dur sau ? cum de nu se rupe ? ...

    • @pauliascau
      @pauliascau  7 років тому +1

      E doar polistiren expandat EPS, trebuie sa ai mare grija cu el ca se rupe usor, insa mai nou am inceput sa fac matritele din ghips... matritele din filmare le-am facut mai demult cand nu aveam contul de UA-cam.... scz ca nu tiam raspuns pana acum, dar cei de la youtube nu ma anunta intotdeauna cand posteaza cineva un comment, la fel cum postez eu video-uri, iar UA-cam nu ii anunta pe subscriberi

    • @sorin990
      @sorin990 7 років тому

      Nu este nici o problema :). Dar de ce nu folosesti fibra de sticla cu rasina ? e mai light, nu ocupa atata spatiu precum o matrita groasa din gips si rezista mai mult in timp (in sensul a nu se sparge\crapa precum gipsul)

    • @pauliascau
      @pauliascau  7 років тому +1

      Pt ca si fibra de sticla are dezavantajele ei ( e mult mai scumpa, pt o matrita de acoperis ar costa aprox. 150-200 de lei, iar din ghips aprox. 10 lei), timpul de uscare e asemanator, iar cand e vorba de greutate mare trebuie ramforsat cu lemn... oricum o matrita de ghips te poate tine aprox. 100 de turnari daca ai grija de ele si daca folosesti calti de canepa cand o confectionezi nu crapa asa usor, imi place mai mult ghipsul pt inca un motiv, ca nu e asa de toxic ca rasinile epoxice si sunt obisnuit cu el din liceu cand am invatat sa fac matrite

    • @sorin990
      @sorin990 7 років тому

      Heheh tare, da asa este,din pacate este destul de costisitoare rasina + fibra de sticla, dar HEY ! gandestete asa, daca priemsti o comanda de ex 1000 de piese, nu trebuie sa te chinui sa refaci din ghips matrita respectiva :)

    Where did you get the molds? It's easy with molds. I used an ad plan in Readers Digest back in the 1970's when I was a kid. You made your own cardboard mold and cored withs paper milk containers-all done by scratch and molded by hand. It came out beautiful. I thought that's what this video was about but you have professional molds. I do have a great mix for concreat an old Masson taught me so its lasted for 50 years. Please include information about your molds and if there're available for purchase. Thank you. Beautiful design.

    This is Japanese stone lantern? That does not exist. It is a specimen of China. You can find the same lantern. It can be seen in Korea Film(kim ki duk - spring.. summer winter and spring. ) I think of the influence of Japan's media and Japan's trade in the U.S.A. There are no countries advertising their own country as Japan does.

    • @pauliascau
      @pauliascau  7 років тому

      It's a japanese Yukimi doro or Yukimi Gata lantern and I simplified the design. Well, Japan took a lot of elements from different cultures (Korea, China) during the war periods.

      @음잘알레퍼런스 7 років тому +1

      This stone lantern has almost the same appearance as a whole. It is virtually indistinguishable. You can see, google image serch Keyword 石燈(Chinese character), 석등(Korean caharacter Hangul)

      Thanks. Different than stone lantern story. Stone tower(Stupa
      ) that can express the difference in Asian stone art. you can see google image keyword china(古代石塔高), japan(石塔寺, 般若寺宝塔), korea(석탑 hangul), Perhaps it seems to be able to find a big difference. The stone tower exists most in Korea in Asia, but it is not known.
