I wish they had been filming Daltrey in the studio when he was singing the vocals for this song. It must have been incredible to see, with all the passion he puts into the vocals on Love Reign O'er Me. Another great vocal performance by Roger on the Quadrophenia album is on "Sea and Sand".
So many people do! Have you guys heard the cover Eddie Vedder put out on YT with Daltry's blessing? Eddie Vedder lives Thw Who and has always names them as his biggest influence. He sang this for Roger at his birthday party. I love Eddie like most people but was skeptical at a redo of such a perfect classic. Of course Eddie knocked it out of the park! At times I really thought it was Roger! If you all haven't heard it yet, you really should make a point to!
Who can be hit and miss for me, I don't seek them out, but when I hear one of their songs again, I'm reminded how great they were. Gen x on board. " we have the legends "
The Who is one of the Top Bands ever. Everyone was beyond just talented. Seeing them play live in the early 1970s left you stunned; it was magical. No opening act, 3 hours on stage of Sonic Power, a Tsunami of music. Time and Space didn't exist.
Not to take anything away from the rest of the band, the are all masters in their own right. But, I have to say that Pete Townsend is truly a songwriter of the highest echelon. He is easily in my top five of genius songwriters! Just incredible!!
The first ever from anybody rock opera was Tommy by the Who. The album Tommy came first. Years later Tommy the movie came out. Super popular. Listen to the album as a long reaction. Then watch the movie full of music stars and movie stars and the Who in starring roles. Acting with all songs for dialogue. Then do Quadrophenia, it was on vinal and 8 track.
First of all, there are no love birds. NONE! ZERO! Next, there is no more perfect line of lyrics than, "The night is hot and black as ink." Single syllable words that hit the beat like a glove. And of course, you got the rest. Those big fat piano chords and the way Pete makes such an uplifting yet mournful sound. How did he do that? Just masterful!
The Who have so many great songs, but my favorite era remains their earlier live performances. I was during a time when youthful passion collided with musical talent, creating a raw and powerful sound that was unmatched. Check out My Generation from Live at Leeds, a 15 minute medley of one banging riff after another.
I'll never forget the night I saw The Who in Chicago (with Robert Plant as the opening act) when they played "Love Reign O'er Me" twice! They performed it the first time and the band got a bit lost towards the end of the song. Roger Daltrey was pissed off about it and said "We're going to play this all night if we have to, to get it right". They performed it a 2nd time and absolutely nailed it. The crowd gave them a long standing ovation because LROM is always a fan favorite.
Arguably the finest album closer ever. The entire album, QUADROPHENIA, is an absolute masterpiece and arguably The Who's and Townshend's finest work. To listen to the entire album in one sitting is both exhilarating and emotionally exhausting at the same time. This band were so far ahead of the game it's not funny. Greatest band of all time. When you consider originality, influence, musicianship, body of work and last but not least, their incredible ability to play live. Put that all together and they sit at the very top of the mountain.
The first time I saw the Who they were promoting "Quadrophenia. They had speakers set up around the arena which made Rogers vocals sound like they were coming from the ceiling . Such a great night it was. It was also Lynyrd Skynyrd's first major tour, as they were the opening act. I enjoy your show, I hope you keep it going!
The Who are one of my favorite band. The band started in the early 60's along with The Beatles...had a very different sound than the Beatles, and have become Iconic and legendary with their songs as the theme music to the CSI Crime Series. I saw them last year in concert and they were unbelievably AMAZING!!! Peter Townsend still doing his iconic guitar riffs and Roger Daltry vocals are as strong as they were in the 60's......Incredible concert. . Good reaction. Also The Who performed with 12 piece orchestra...very nice!!!! And they performed this song!!!! Amazing!!!!
Hopefully you'll react to the entire Quadrophenia album. Many consider "Who's Next" as the greatest album by The Who, but to me Quadrophenia is the one. It is spectacular. There is also a Quadrophenia movie. Sting plays the part of the Ace Face (and a bellboy) in the movie.
Love your reaction to my favorite band now.i don't feel crazy for traveling from city to city to see them live whenever they toured. I really hope you continue to do a deep dive into their huge amazing catalog of songs. I would suggest the album Who by numbers which includes however much I booze, slip kid, imagine a man, how many friends and others great tunes.
I remember that when I saw the movie I was quite familiar with The Who but not ever over impressed, in general. I was a huge film buff at the time and a massive Sting and Police fan, so I went to see it as soon as it arrived in Dublin, where I lived. I walked right out of the cinema and into a record store and bought the soundtrack album only because of this song and it`s still my favorite Who song of all time. Roger Daltrey is one of a kind.
TOMMY & QUADROPHENIA WERE ROCK OPERAS GIB 😊TOMMY WAS THE DEAF, DUMB AND BLIND KID, A WHOLE CAST OF STARS BUT ( ELTON JOHN ) PLAYED THE PINBALL WIZARD, BUT THERE 'S THE ALBUM FROM ( THE WHO ) AND ALSO THERE'S THE MOVIE SO 😊 THERE YA GO MY FRIEND!👍
TOP TUNE! You have to listen to the Album to put it all in context. The Album is Amazing……The ORIGINAL Album that is. Give the film Quaudrophenia a watch.✌🏻🏴
This is a brilliant song (from Quadrophenia). The natural follow-up to it is a song called “I’ve Had Enough” (the final song on the album). It heavily samples “love Reign O’er Me” on the record. It’s also brilliant. Thanks 🙏🏻
This one was Mom's favorite. Quadrophenia as a whole is worth diving into. (Tommy would be the first rock opera, and Who's Next is mostly remnants of what was supposed to be the second one; Quadrophenia is built on what they learned from those two projects.) For a good 'Pete on vocals' track, try "The Song Is Over" (I think it's the best thing on Who's Next, but the whole album's so good I can't fault people for ranking them differently). Pete sings the verses, Roger does the chorus.
You should react to Pearl Jam covering this and The Real Me at VH1 Rock Honors The Who. Just look it up on UA-cam. Phenomenal performance. Eddie kills it, they all do
When it comes to the performing arts, it always starts with the writing. I think The Who is as good as it gets and almost all their writing/arranging was Pete. This is a masterpiece in my opinion, and they have quite a few others.
I’m sure others have said, this is the culmination of four sides of vinyl (Quadrophenia). A better album than Tommy (in my opinion). Great song and great reaction!
This was probably not the Who's best song...but you could sure make an argument that it is! Seriously, to me, music doesn't get much better than this. And you seem to get it...congrats!
Timeless
I've always thought that this was Rodger Daltry's best vocal perfomance.
Beat me to it, yes
I wish they had been filming Daltrey in the studio when he was singing the vocals for this song. It must have been incredible to see, with all the passion he puts into the vocals on Love Reign O'er Me. Another great vocal performance by Roger on the Quadrophenia album is on "Sea and Sand".
Best for everyone in the band.
So many people do! Have you guys heard the cover Eddie Vedder put out on YT with Daltry's blessing? Eddie Vedder lives Thw Who and has always names them as his biggest influence. You just experienced "peak Who". Their finest moment.
Even after 50 years I get speechless listening to this.
Who can be hit and miss for me, I don't seek them out, but when I hear one of their songs again, I'm reminded how great they were. Gen x on board. " we have the legends "
STRONGGGG DOUBLE ENTEN THERE HUH??? 😊FYYYYRRRRRR GIB, LISTEN TO THAT RAWWWWW POWER IN DAWLTREY'S VOICE!💯😊
One of the greatest songs of all time. IF you said it was the greatest, you would not be crazy.
Such a strong finish to Quadrophenia. Keith’s drumming is just spectacular as is Roger’s vocals.
The Who is one of the Top Bands ever. Everyone was beyond just talented. Seeing them play live in the early 1970s left you stunned;

Roger's vocals on this track are so intense, love it
Pete Townsend is the Producer, songwriter, and Composer of The Who. Roger Daltry lead singer/frontman of this song!!!! Good reaction!!!
An epic ending to an epic album.
Not to take anything away from the rest of the band, the are all masters in their own right. But, I have to say that Pete Townsend is truly a songwriter of the highest echelon. He is easily in my top five of genius songwriters! Just incredible!!
One of their best.
FYI, the contraction of over as o'er is in the Star Spangled Banner. " O'er the ramparts we watched" it is just not used very often.
Bette LaVette did a amazing cover when The Who were honored at Lincoln Ceremony
“Oh man, this is strong” . Imagine hearing this in ‘73, on vinyl on the day of release, The Who just being The Who, the greatest sound in rock 🎸
The first ever from anybody rock opera was Tommy by the Who. The album Tommy came first. Years later Tommy the movie came out. Super popular. Listen to the album as a long reaction. This was from the second rock opera that Pete wrote Quadrophenia 1973, the first was Tommy 1969 both are epic.
I like how the lightning synchs with the cymbal crashes at the end.
one of their best, and for mr, roger daltrey, only him swing the micro🎤 like that, icons,🤘🎯🤘
Also, they did make this into a film...
First of all, there are no love birds. NONE! ZERO!

"The night is hot and black as ink. Hooo god I need a drink .... " gets me every time. That sweeping 3:4 time. Or is it 6:8? Majestic stuff.
Definitely 6/8.

Rock Opera, my man. Rock, Blues, Classical. Roger Awesome vocals and Pete great lyrics.

Man you said it epic. Dude your reactions are spot on you've got a good ear. Peace ✌️

The Who at their most progressive moments. This is one of the top five concept albums. Pete Towhshend's solo catalog is also great.
Has a single composer ever had a run like Townshend did from 1969-73? An astounding output of great music.
Maybe Ray Davies from 1966-'71. The Kinks music from that era is the equal of any band.
Greatest Rock Band Ever

The whole album is great - especially in surround sound. Saw them play this in 82.
almost guaranteed to give anyone goosebumps! 😅
Quadraphenia is such an overlooked album. Another great song on this is the very first cut called The Real Me
So stoked for you to hear this song.
Favorite Who song. Great album.

Powerful track.

My favorite song by them!
Favorite band! So many great songs! ❤️🎶

Very powerful
TOP TUNE! You have to listen to the Album to put it all in context. The Album is Amazing……The ORIGINAL Album that is. Give the film Quaudrophenia a watch.✌🏻🏴
Just a little addendum: Pete's piano opening is played on the black keys only.

Great Who choice.Epic,Keith and Roger at their best..Great channel,so much more Who to explore
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Rock Opera, and the Who at their peak...but dude, play the whole album, front to back, as it's meant to be! ..❤
You should react to Pearl Jam covering this and The Real Me at VH1 Rock Honors The Who. Just look it up on UA-cam. Phenomenal performance. Eddie kills it, they all do
Magnificence.
♥
Great song. I suggest the Adam Sandler movie "Reign over me" which uses this song, along with others, and really shows Sandlers chops.
You have to react to "Baba O'Reilly" by The Who (album version with video and lyrics). Love your reactions and comments!
Try Pinball Wizard, Long Live Rock and 5:15 and as far as rock opera try The Who's Tommy
When it comes to the performing arts, it always starts with the writing. I think The Who is as good as it gets and almost all their writing/arranging was Pete. This is a masterpiece in my opinion, and they have quite a few others.
You started at the wrong end. 😁 Now go back to the beginning with I Am The Sea and The Real Me. The whole opera will blow you away...
I’m sure others have said, this is the culmination of four sides of vinyl (Quadrophenia).
A better album than Tommy (in my opinion). Great song and great reaction!
Quadrephenia is the best!
The sweat of love birds 😂😡
Tommy
This was probably not the Who's best song...but you could sure make an argument that it is! Seriously, to me, music doesn't get much better than this. And you seem to get it...congrats!
Powerhouse of a song, and definitely one of the best from them yet! Great band every time
I think a few of the lyrics are wrong.
I'm sorry but this album blows away anything the Beatles did
