I've had to do several iron butts. The first two by choice, literally setting out and seeing if I could do it. The rest, because I was crossing the country. My tips are: * Leave mega early. I like to leave at 2am, that way when I stop for "breakfast" at about 10am, i've got 8 hours of riding already behind me and most of the daylight to still ride. * Ear plugs. And noise cancelling earbuds for music. * Throttle lock/ cruise control. Self explanatory. * Advil. At about hour 14- 17 it's gonna get miserable if you're not used to being on the bike for long periods. * When you stop to eat, no heavy foods. Better to snack and nibble on small snacks than have steak and potatoes. * Hydrate. Drink more water than Gatorade. * Be flexible. That includes cancelling if you need to.
Did ours on 10/9/2021-10/10/2021. Havelock, NC, to the Tail of the Dragon, over to Dandrage TN and back to Havelock. Great ride and had a lot of fun. Listen to this young man, he speaks a lot of wisdom on preparation and considerations!
Really enjoyed your video. Very informative to those contemplating this ride. YMMV, but personally I don't advocate coffee and other stimulants. Your advice to hydrate is spot on.. Be rested, drink lots of water, get off the bike as necessary to stretch, and have fun.
I'm planning on doing a saddlesore on my MT07 this spring. My longest ride to this point is 675 miles in a day so I'm the extra 350 won't be too bad. I appreciate your experience on a non-touring/adv bike as most videos I've seen have been on those kinds of bikes.
Welcome to the Iron Butt world. Way back in September, I found out about IBA rides and that we could do rides by ourselves. I have done 3 rides, but I used my Goldwing. I am up in the great white north, Canada and we are in Kilometers. I have done one 1658km in Sept and 2 rides of 2000km in October. I don't know why we have 2000km rides and there are no 1245miles rides in less than 24 hours. Next year, I out for the 2500km or 1553 miles.
so how much did you spend on gas give or take?? i wanna travel to florida from arizona its about 1,700 miles and idk how much i need to save to be able to fill up the whole way
Congratulations on completing the ride. The last year has seen a lot of people doing their first rides and certification times have been long. Waiting for the cert in many ways is harder than doing the ride. Quite a few people have had to endure 4 months of waiting. IBA# 68779
Looking for my first bike but the problem I’m looking for a bike that’s gonna take me from Indianapolis to Dallas in 1 shot as smooth as possible. Any suggestions. Might stay away from bikes but really have the fever.
I’m 16, and I’m about to attempt the saddlesore 1000 on my vstrom 650, with my dad on his Honda Goldwing. This video helped a lot. Thanks.
Let me know how it goes! Best of luck!

It really is such a fun challenge to subject yourself to.
I have an 07 fz1. I need a small cash cage. Have a link for yours and the Highway pegs? Thanks in advance.

Yea I was beginning to lose hope because mine was taking so long; I actually sent a follow up email and got my certificate shortly after. lol.
