In today's Kerbal Space Program video, I decided to create something I've always wanted to try - a self-unpacking, self-assembling surface base in a box! I think it turned out better than expected, and is definitely one of the most satisfying things I've built in Kerbal Space Program! I hope you enjoy!

Very nice
this actually helps a lot! thanks for the coupon
6:49 "dont do this at Nasa" should be a general slogan for ksp
that'd make for a great t-shirt. have a shirt with some monstrosity created in KSP with "Don't do this NASA" on it

I found the video you saw 8 years ago! The channel is called “The Chemical Cage” and it’s one of three videos on their channel. Still the only box style base video I’ve seen other than this one!
hope Matt sees this

We need the OG Matt in here.

I found a UA-camr that matches your description of Daniel Kim. His name is draigx but he does not come up when I search him, but just search base in a box and you will find him. He has few KSP videos, both from 2016 era.
So he probably changed his channel name.

The Karman line is named after Karman Kerman who always insisted on a 70km sphere around her be marked at all times.

Also, the only Daniel Kim I could find was a Nasa PHD.
Deferred Rendering has the features of Planetshine while also making everything look like a NASA render.
Oh dear, Matt, please... PLEASE remind your rover controls to be different from SAS controls. If you do, then you can leave SAS turned on while you're driving to allow for quick recovery if you start to tip. I put rover controls on the numpad and leave SAS on WASD so my left hand controls SAS and my right hand controls wheels.
This!
Or you can at least toggle SAS mode on the reaction wheel to hold only (non pilot) I usually find this sufficient
7:52 Its kerman line
I love the Danger Sliding™ to get around the Mun
This is like those matchbox car playsets in the box that unfolds from back in the day. Love it!!
I'm probably in the mniority here, but i don't mind the default brightness settings when you're on the dark side of the planet.
it just feels more authentic that way
Darn it Matt, I work for NASA and we were just about to do this. We'd just signed a contract with Boeing to make it.
NASA employs part clipping, confirmed

30:00 I definitely prefer when it's live commentary.

4:25 THAT TRANSITION WAS SMOOTH
Silky.
BTW Matt; if you like base in a box 📦 the "Ground Construction" (also included in USI Kolonization) has this. Your unpacking / build animation was epic though.
MATT you should get the scansat mod, you can send satellites in orbit of a planet and record its altimetry and find a very flat area with very little slope to land bases before you send them
You should try the Kerbal VR mod.

@@war_fish what what
@@danzstuff what what what!?
how would a vr mod for ksp work
@@war_fish Not how would it, it does already exist. You can just look it up
BlackRack's deferred rendering makes planetshine obsolete, yea. You were joking about the ablative shield exploding when it hit the ground, made me think of a mod called Kerbal KRASH system, if you haven't heard of it already, and it essentially rewrites collisions to allow for part deformation and damage, like if a fuel tank is damaged itll leak fuel, or a damaged engine won't provide as much thrust or wont gimbal. but, this also means parts don't automatically explode once they reach their impact limit, they get damaged based on a percentage system similar to smash bros, where the higher the percentage, the more damaged it is, the more likely that part is to explode, but its not a guarantee. Makes landing planes a lot easier since you don't have to worry about your wheel's detonating when you land slightly too hard
7:29 i feel like it should be kerban line
🎶
It's a BASE IN A BOX!
It's a base in a box babe...
🎶
I really enjoy live commentaries because of the “oooop” that happens when something goes wrong
Keep up the great work Matt
oh my goodness gracious, i need to tell NASA about this!
I mean, if you really want to use the rover with probe controls, you could always just send a quick satellite with a relay dish and antenna around the moon, but I'm sure you already know that
22:01 That was the Loudest Matt Lowne Scream I've ever heard in my Entire Life LMAO
22:47 HE YELLED AGAIN
See, I always give my rovers a crap load of SAS. I set it all to stability only, save for one wheel on which I toggle torque off by default and have toggle torque set as an action. That way the rover has spectacular driving stability, and can still be manually self righted or realigned mid air by enabling / disabling the single full SAS wheel
I've been playing a lot of planet Crafter too! Also great video! 😊
"Won't there be a bunch of part clipping when it's inside the box?"
Matt: " ..So anyway"
22:00 Bob Kerman has a pretty strong head.
Watching the base unfold was very satisfying.
That's so awesome, good job man!
Bit of a nitpick: don't confuse the _far_ side of the Mun (or the Moon) with the _DARK_ side of the same. The dark side is opposite the sun, and rotates around the moon. The FAR side is the side that is always facing away from Kerbin (or Earth). The far side isn't always dark!
Matt, your live commentary is entirely engaging and charming and i am absolutely enthusiastic about you keeping it up in future videos. But i understand that editing needs to happen so i don't expect it all the time. It's just a nice treat
The vessel switching mod you're looking for Matt is just call Easy Vessel Switch. Absolute godsend for KSP1
I like having lights pointing at the fuselage, for night side docking.
This is actually hilarious! 😂
Reminds me of this one kerbal x build called craft in a box (it wasnt really a box, just a seq 9 container)
15:43 I hear "new construction options" in my head😂
TBH this box base concept does remind me of the MCV from command & conquer, and the clipping especially reminds me of how "unrealistic" the RA2 mcv's animation was, with parts coming out of seemly nowhere
I. Love. This. The live commentary detracted nothing from the video and was a nice addition to the events as they... ahem.... unfolded. Thanks as always for the entertainment!
I played career mode once on my cousins account, and we built a whole fuel mining op on kerban, with individual mining setups, refinery setups, and a plane that comes and collects the fuel and drops it over the KSC, don't know where that came from but I just remembered it
Hey Matt, I always add external lights on all my ships and stations, so I can see what I'm doing at night, with beautiful results. I think it would look very nice on video.
3:06 _....insert goose chase meme_ Won't there be clipping Matt?!!
First thing I thought of when I saw the box was “CARGO CONTAINER!”.
I like to set my reaction wheel(s) to an action group so I can activate/deactivate them on the "fly" or while I'm in mid air and/or flipping over. Likewise I sometime set them to only accept SAS input so I don't flip forward while trying to accelerate as what seems to have happened here 26:35. Just a couple of the many tips and tricks I've picked up from all the fabulous KSP content creators I've watched over the last 2 years
Rovers work better if you leave the reaction wheels on but set them to SAS only. Turn up the friction on the wheels. Turn off the front braking, and perhaps turn up the rear wheel breaking. They also work better with wide wheel bases and lower centers of gravity.
The SIMPLE CONSTRUCTION mod sounds like a logical step to take for your space program after this mission.
honestly, this has given me a bit of an idea for my own base-building.
all my surface bases i've built so far have been "bespoke" for lack of a better term - specifically designed and built for wherever they're going. but now I want to make a sort of standardized "starter" base that can just be tossed wherever and added onto
Some of mh favorite missions are ones where you land a surface base, dockable rover (to the base), satellite system and reusable rocket to kerbin. All in one launch.
I want more Matt Lowne live commentary tbh, they’re so hectic!! ❤
Consider binding the "wheels drive" & "wheels reverse" keys to a button other than W & S. I like using shift and ctrl to prevent the SAS from leaning the car forwards when driving.
"but wouldnt there be lots of part clipping?"
.......so anyway-
[3:03] ROFL. Absolutely was thinking that. Best. Answer. Ever.
Need to make spacecraft out of whatever the kerbals use in their helmets. That should make it indestructible.
"Make a city!"
He said jokingly.
"Alright!"
Matt lowne said, with a smirk on his face.
5 hours later, Matt made NYC and Louisiana in ksp.
You know he's a good welder when he can successfully do it while having a siezure
I do certainly like the live commentary bits
Here's a fun idea, you should make a KSRSS video. It's smaller than RSS, so you can still use stock parts, it has volumetric clouds compatibility, so it looks really pretty, and it has a decent amount of challenge, while still being doable with stock parts.
KSRSS looked really low res for me and everything was dark,, do you know what happened
Daniel Kim sounded super super familiar to me too, only to find out he's the guy behind "Pop Danthology" who did music mashups and remixes that I listened to in high school. No KSP from what I can find.
Great head canon for the part clipping inside the box.
Matt, i know youve done a thousand videos on this, but I need help for one of the mission control missions, where I need to build a surface base on minmus that houses 15 KERBALS and I have no idea how I'm supposed to do that with no DLC. I'd love to see how you would tackle this mission. The mission also states that you need a mobile processing lab, at least 3 scientists , a docking port, an antenna and can generate power. It also has to fully assembled when launched.
8:24 THAT WAS MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Wait. They're Berenstain BEARS now!?!
You should make a SSTO that carries around a couple of different landers and is meant to bring new Kerbals to all of your permanent bases
Part clipping works in my headcannon because irl we could custom design/shape things but in ksp we're stuck with the shapes we're given.
Smooth transition into the add :) bravo
Ah yes, the danger slide. My favorite way to move without wheels! 🔥
5 views in a minute? Matt isn't falling off
Aha new ksp video been waiting for this one
I like to turn off auto-friction on the rover wheels. Set it to 40 or 50% of maximum for Mun and 60+ for Min
Love this video! Please do more live audio recording stuff it's so fun!
I was literally watching one of your videos yesterday and thought.... "I wonder if it's possible in this game to build a massive space station that assembles itself after touching down on a planet surface".
Low and behold, here you are less than 24 hours later with the answer.
GET OUT OF MY BRAIN 😂
If you're looking for recommendations, my favourite mod right now is Raster Prop Monitor, along with IVA mods such as DE_IVA or ALCOR
thats a very cool base and concept, I believe in the Kaerbalverse quantum entanglement research is somewhat further along, hence the built in part clipping ability...
Bill must be Australian with those breakdancing moves...
this was great, I loved the live commentary in the second half!
Id really love a proper slow time video showing how to build more complex rockets and stations inc which buttons to press, how to join stuff etc etc
Actually cracked up at the cut off at the end lol
he's built richard hammond's bloody campervan
_Construction complete!_
if you put the largest probe core on a craft with a pilot kerbal on it, probes don't need to be able to communicate with earth, only near the kerbal.
After a little bit of researching, Daniel Kim's yt channel seems to be @dumbman111, its renamed to SpaceAgeDreamer, and has no public videos. Only has ~350 subscribers though so idk
Thank god gene didnt get into the shrooms this time
17:30
oxygen matt. oxygen. kerbals kinda need oxygen to breathe.
17:52 That thing looks like a fuckin apache rocket pod 😭😭
Maybe next week launch a comsat or three to link the base to the KSC? Also, dual-launch with a hab module in a box of its own.
Love these new videos!!!! It’s a shame that ksp2 didn’t quite workout as of now but I’m still hoping in the future it can still continue to develop
Part clipping IRL is no joke!
“I’m a leaf on the wind!” [I-Beam part clips thru chest] 😳
This game NEEDS more Origami self-assembling bases ❤
Nice! Next episode should be a boxed box in a box!
I miss that in KSP 2 where the tracking center doesn't have a load time at all. It's soooooooo annoying having to switch to tracking and then back to a ship.
Maybe the little tanks can be some sort of septic tank or Waste Management System.
Dr who has a police box that's much bigger on the inside. You should ask him how he does it. I'm sure being a time lord has its perks.
