At my school, there are instruments called snare B's...basically they're a tenor 4 drum with a mesh head that plays watered down snare parts and make no noise. That's what I think those things behind the snares are
Charles Cuautli THREE YEARS LATE THAN NEVER. Chino hills takes piccolo snares and gut them to give them a bass sound so they blend in with the bass drums. Other than sounding bass-y, they usually play whatever the snares play just slightly watered down. At my school they're called toms but they also go by flubs. We take drums from an old set of tenors and use those for toms, the only difference being the appearance haha. They usually are for the people who didn't make the cut for upper battery or bass and are preparing to move up to a different drum the following year :)
