He made this song upbeat to contrast the lyrics he wrote when he was having suicidal thoughts. Interesting juxtaposition. He's saying "today is the greatest day" ironically. Don't worry I didn't realize this for decades lol.
Yup... his perspective was, "the future will never get better", there's no hope... therefore today "is the greatest" because it's all downhill after. 😂
Mayonnaise and 33 are the songs that as soon as I hear them, I just end up in a better mood. There is just something they do to my brain chemistry that just slow everything in the world down and make me feel like everything is going to be okay.
The video does hint at his depressed state, seeing love everywhere except for him. Finds his band one by one, and their art breaks him out of his state. At the end, he's ready to start over.
This song actually got me into listening to more smashing pumpkins, “bullet with butterfly wings” or “mayonnaise” are both fantastic songs by them also, thanks for the reaction jay 🙂
Alright. Now you've done it. I had to crawl out of my introverted lair to comment because seeing you do SP from Siamese Dream made me very, very happy. Billy's lyrics run very deep and painfully poetic. Jimmy Chamberlain is the drummer and he is one of the best ever (inspired me to play drums). Now, if you listen to something from Gish, that would realllllllly be cool. I also think you'd appreciate Ava Adore, song and video. If you're loving Mellon Collie - you MUST do Tonight, Tonight. It's a masterpiece and the video is so beautiful, nostalgic, and creative with that gramophone sound and feel, innovative... it won awards back in the 90s. Enjoy :)
I generally agree with you, but the Tonight Tonight video, while beautiful and nostalgic, isn’t that creative. It is just a recreation of a film from 1902 by Georges Méliès.
@Rose Madder There is a blurred line between being creative and being an imitator, and I think anyone who looks at Méliès' original can see that Tonoght, Tonight's video is much less an original work than the video of Today is. What you describe for Today is a creative process, very different than reusing both the story and the style of an existing movie. Tonight, Tonight is still great though, both the song and the video.
@Rose Madder I fullt agree with everything you wrote. I didn’t really mean to critize Tonight, Tonight’s video, but rather make the extremely creative original known. I learned of the original through Scorsese’s film Hugo, which is well worth an evening of itself.
Smashing Pumpkins is a huge universe in itself. Lots of their songs are masterpieces. Their singles and associated videos are so well executed that they deserve an entire session to watch them with absolute attention. Your channel is excellent. Good job, bro! And don't forget to take a look at Placebo. Those guys really, really, really rock! Cheers!
Ya gotta react to tonight, tonight next, arguably the bands best song and by far one of the best music videos in that time period it won an award for best picture so I'd def recommend reacting to that
Always happy to see you react to the pumpkins. They have been my favorite band since 94. This was actually the first song I ever heard by them. The wall of guitars never fails to give me goosebumps.
You were right about there being a sliding sound on the guitar. Even though the song sounds very happy and cheery, it's actually about overcoming depression. The line of " today is the greatest day" is to be looked at as sarcastic. The pumpkins are a great alternative rock band, but probably got overlooked by the grunge bands. Zero, Bullet, 33, and tonight tonight from Mellon Collie show their range. 30 years since the debut and still record and tour.
The Smashing Pumpkins is one of my all time favorite bands. A few more really good ones is Bullet with butterfly wings Ava Adore Tonight tonight Disarm And so many more!!!
When I was in high school with this came out all I use to listen to was rap, but this song kicked ass. Now almost 30 years later all I listen to is rock and metal.
This song is actually about the worst day of his life.. the day he almost committed suicide.. however, after he got through I he realized it was the greatest day ever because he knew .. if that was the worst day ever, that every day afterwards had to be better and that's a beautiful thing
LOVE this song interpretation. HAHAHAHAH! Yeah this is a happy song. Yep. It actually won the Grammy for Most Happiest song that year. Don't believe me, look it up.
Killer band live. Favorite memory was seeing them back in the early 90’s with Pearl Jam and RHCP and Billy Corgan flicked off the crowd and walked off the stage at one point.
Okay that's 2 favorites down now you have to do my favorite "Bullet With Butterfly Wings". A few others "Tonight Tonight", "Cherub Rock", "Mayonaise", "Disarm"
Bought Siamese twins back in the day big pumpkins fans since few years back my daughter announced she loved them now can’t wait for my grandchildren to discover them.world class band
Please do a reaction on "Tonight, Tonight" (the video is based on a short film made by George Melies called "A Trip To The Moon") and Ava Adore (most of the video was made with a continuous shot).
Smashing pumpkins are one of the best bands to come out of the 1990s. I have listened to them since I was 12 years old and their stuff was played in rotation on MTV. The best stuff of theirs was not their main stream stuff imo either.
Awww Yay!! You're really stretching! Enya to Smashing Pumpkins!? Love it man! Try out Zero and Tonight Tonight by them. And their first big one: bullet with butterfly wings. Loving your journey man!
'Pumpkins influenced lots of bands, such as here in the Philippines. Speaking of bands, you can also check out these songs from Filipino bands; they are really good especially in English songs. I suggest songs such as: 1. Queso, "Mottaka" 2. Callalily, "Dream", "A Starry Night", and "Trapped Inside the Moment" 3. Music Hero, "KLWKN" (the title originally means "kalawakan", which is "universe" in English.) - a Tagalog love song 4. Any Name's Okay, "Clouds" 5. EVEN, "Stolen" and "Venus" 6. Kean Cipriano, "Make Me Fly" 7. Kjwan, "One Look" 8. PhiLia, "Killers" 9. Wilabaliw, "Illuminate I", "Fahira", "Not so Fast" and the acoustic-driven "Melbourne" 10. Save Me Hollywood, "High" 11. Gabby Alipe, "Ether" 12. Parokya ni Edgar, "Don't Think" (a powerful motivational song) , "Alone with You" 13. Never the Strangers, "Moving Closer" 14. Drive Me to Juliet, "Saving Glass Heart" 15. Gracenote - "I Will Wait" 16. Letter Day Story- "Save Me" 17. Slapshock, "Night Owls" and "Agent Orange" 18. Greyhoundz, "Rat Metal" Thanks, and hope you enjoy those tunes.
Nope, I can see why you were puzzled. He doesn't get laid. The video is weird, the song is a classic. Billy wrote this song in response to his suicidal feelings. "These ribbon scars' are wrist scars. "My angel wings are bruised" speak to his positive feelings being turned to depression. And Chamberlain drives this angst HOME on the drums. Thank heavens Billy did come out of his depression, however, and gave us this beautiful song.
@@trishredding8009 it's not the best banger on that record even. Jellybelly, Tales of a scorched earth, An ode to no one, Thru the eyes of ruby, porcelina of the vast oceans
Love Smashing Pumpkins! So much to choose from still! Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness is one of my favorite (dubbel) albums 🙂 "And into the eyes of the jackal I say ka-boom!!" 😃 That's the song X.Y.U., but I don't know if you're ready, it's intense maybe 😁
Listening to every song ever made by the Smashing Pumpkins, in chronological order, is a great way to enrich a soul. BTW, it really is just Billy Corgan.
It's a "dark" song.. he is in this Mr.Rogers/Peter Pan-Ice Cream Man- style role. He is selling himself as a "good" person but has these dark inner thoughts.

Yup... his perspective was, "the future will never get better", there's no hope... therefore today "is the greatest" because it's all downhill after. 😂
I did not know this, it's like when I say " happy days' although I mean the opposite, it's confusing for some people
I know how sad it’s supposed to be but this song makes me feel so happy I love it so much I listen to it when I want to be in a good mood
"Mayonaise", "Cherub Rock" or " Tonight, Tonight" should be next on the reaction list. Definitely one of my favorite 90's alternative groups.
SOMA!
I know I dig 1979,disarm,both r kickass:)))
Mayonnaise and 33 are the songs that as soon as I hear them, I just end up in a better mood. There is just something they do to my brain chemistry that just slow everything in the world down and make me feel like everything is going to be okay.
Tonight, Tonight always makes me cry.. something about human aspiration.
Mayonnaise! 🤘✌
The video does hint at his depressed state, seeing love everywhere except for him. Finds his band one by one, and their art breaks him out of his state. At the end, he's ready to start over.
I really like that break down 🙂
Nice observation, checked the video again, it's first James, then D'Arcy and lastly Jimmy
“Disarm” was another great song from Siamese Dream
Yes, that the song of theirs that I think that he should hear next.
Yes I love that one better than this one.
Great song but it kind of bugs me that it sounds so much like Sword of Damocles by Lou Reed. They must have been inspired by it.
One of my favorites off this album is "Soma". Pumpkins helped me through highschool and the loss of my dad.
Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness was sit back and chill album in 90's!!!! Fantastic!!!! 😉❤✌🏼
This song actually got me into listening to more smashing pumpkins, “bullet with butterfly wings” or “mayonnaise” are both fantastic songs by them also, thanks for the reaction jay 🙂
"Bullet" is / was the theme song to the show Whale Wars on Discovery Channel.
You have a whole world of music to discover with late 80’s early nineties alt rock 😁
My father went to high school with the Smashing Pumpkins lead singer Billy Corgan.
Can't go wrong with the pumpkins. So so good

Billy Corgan's voice 🎤

You have to do Zero and Bullet with Butterfly Wings. In fact just do the entire Mellon Collie and the Infinate Sadness, It's a cracking album.
Always happy to see you react to the pumpkins. They have been my favorite band since 94. This was actually the first song I ever heard by them. The wall of guitars never fails to give me goosebumps.
Still shocked we haven't had the "Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Spread Your Love" on here...
Saw the pumpkins play this at Wembley Arena in May 1996. One of my best concert experiences! 🧡
One of my favorite alternative rock bands. Billy's cover of Stevie Nicks' "Landslide" on the Pisces Iscariot album is fantastic.
Awesome choice! Another classic would be 'Zero' or 'Bullet with Butterfly Wings' . Keep up the great work!

It's a song about suicide. Making this album was tough.
"Ava Adore" is one of my favs of Smashing Pumpkins.

Pink ribbon scars that never forget is about cutting and the scars are visible reminders of dark days
I can remember the very first time I saw this video and being shocked that that voice came out of him. GREAT SONG! 1979 is my fav 🖤
Smashing Pumpkins has some incredibly emotional songs like Thirty Three or Tear as well.
One of my favorite songs by them. Sweet & crunchy at the same time.
I wish I could go back to the first time I heard The Pumpkins. So good.
As others have said, Tonight Tonight is a must.
Today is the greatest.....
Bullet With Butterfly Wings. The Smashing Pumpkins.and Ava Adore. The Smashing Pumpkins.
Great song. Makes me think of Lakini's Juice, by the band called Live.
Good band to react to. Keep doing it.

Rat In A Cage is another good song of theirs that shows a different side of them. Great song pick and reaction!! 🙂
It’s Bullet with Butterfly Wings you’re referring to. That’s the name of the song.

One of my favorite 90s song back then
Love this song!
this was one of the songs that helped me keep pushing during a time when i was really depressed, hopeless, and generally feeling really pathetic
Amazing song. I'd recommend Tonight Tonight by them it's a powerful song in many ways.
Please react to: Smashing Pumpkins: -Tonight, Tonight (official video) -Bullet with Butterfly Wings -We Only Come Out at Night -Thanks!!!
