So glad i found this channel, you are awesome! I am a 4th year student (7 year program) and have pathology as my top consideration. Question, if i wanna hone my lab skills so to speak or learn a bit more into pathology than the standard *mechanism of disease* we learn in med school, what source do u recommend ? Like textbooks u recommend students who are taking a path rotation/elective and for first year residents? Appreciate it advance!
I'm so glad you like my channel! I recommend "The Practice of Surgical Pathology" by Molavi (amzn.to/3uZRjZG)*. It is a short textbook that covers the basics of just about everything. It was my holy grail as a 4th med student and as a PGY1. It's a great book to learn the key points of normal histology, and it provides basic explanations for common non-neoplastic and neoplastic entities that occur in each organ system.
If you ask an attending, they would recommend reference books like Steinburg (amzn.to/33JxGJu)* or Rosai (amzn.to/2Qgg6tu)*, but these textbooks are dense, and is too much for just starting out. They might be something to consider in your 2nd year of residency, but honestly at that point it might be better just to buy reference books for each pathology subspecialty.

Thank you SO MUCH for creating these videos, they couldn't have come at a better time lol. I'm an incoming MS and I am wondering if getting Canadian elective experience would be ok in matching as a non-US citizen/pr? Are observerships equivalent to CE's in pathology? I'm a Canadian (so would be considered as an IMG starting in 2026 to the US) and would love to go to UChicago for my residency as it was my dream school for undergrad (went to Notre Dame and loved the Midwest area haha).

Doing any number of pathology rotations would look good on your application. If you really want to match at UofC, then I would recommend getting an observership at UofC before you apply for residency.

It's never too late to start medical school. Pathology is great for people with families!

How intense is Path residency? Do you have spare time for hobbies? Or is it as demanding/malignant as surgery?
All Residency are intense, steep learning curve, and long hours. That said, Path Residency is less taxing than most residencies (ie. IM/surgery).
hiii im glad i came across your channel dr. cindy because i currently dont know what path should i take to be a pathologist. im 18 from malaysia and currently in my first sem of four sem in matriculation. i choose pathologist as my first job right after i enroll to matriculation because i just realise i love observing tiny cells while doing the biology pratical lab. question, what course of degree should i take to be pathologist? is it bachelor of medical or bachelor in microbiology? i got confused by the course to be a pathologist and want to be prepared since i easily got freak out when i come to choose my study. thanks for you help dr. cindy ^^
If you wish to practice as a pathologist in the US, you will need to acquire a MD or DO or MBB followed by a pathology residency in the US.
How much actual studying do you need to do during pathology residency in comparison to other residencies? How many hours if studying per day on average?

if the year of graduation is within two years ,do I still need clinical experience to apply for matching into pathology residency?
It depends on what you have been doing since graduation. For example, if you have been doing full time work, it would be understandable if you have no done any pathology rotations. But generally, clinical experience in pathology is always a good thing to have.
