New Mexico resident for many years, and have spent countless hours in the Jemez mountains and Bandelier. That rock at your campground wasn't a clay material at all, it's compressed and petrified volcanic ash (pyroclastic flow) from the Valle Caldera, which erupted about 1.5 million years ago, and spread its ash as far as Kansas.
awesome video, and camping spot..great view !.. again, thanks for the link to the hot water system, as im kinda new to nomad camping.. i learn from other people... Gypsy J, van life...
Wife and I have been binge-watching from the beginning and have finally caught up. Hate having to wait on the vlogs now but thanks for posting twice a week.
Looks so peaceful. I've lived in NM for over 20 years. I pass through the Caldera but now I really want to stop and explore. Thanks for showing us this epic landscape.
That cabin was a movie set cabin made for "The Missing". I was lucky enough to stay in the Caldera at the Bunkhouse for a weekend in 2014. I have some great photos and memories of that weekend. The bunkhouse was made into park offices and you can no longer stay in the Caldera. The bunkhouse is near the cabin used in Longmire. There are much bigger chunks of obsidian further up the valley. Back in 2014 we were able to drive up to the valley. You have to hike up there now from the main road. Sometimes if you are lucky you can see a weasel near the visitors center. I believe the 8 room lodge is still in the Caldera and who knows what it was turned into. It is hard to imagine that someone used to own all that land and glad it is a "preserve" so it doesn't become a bunch of mac mansions.
You two have inspired me and my wife to want to get off our butts and go for some adventures. We live in New Mexico and want to start back packing and exploring.
hey guys, glad to c ur having fun.while in NM if u have time,u might visit the Gila( pronounced he-la) wilderness area in the south west part of the state.I think it’s the largest wilderness area in the lower 48.some historians believe it’s where Geronimo hid out.God bless y’all for taking us along,I could literally watch ur videos over and over.I get to see places that I hope to visit one day.y’all are truly the best.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wife and I lived in Albuquerque for a while and visited Spence springs quite a bit. There’s usually hippies that bathe up there in the nude. Last time I was there it was just the two of us in the hot springs pool in the middle of the winter surrounded by snow, talk about gorgeous!
Just missed you guys have been in Creede and Rio Grande NF this week, just came through Santa Fe a few hours ago headed back to Louisiana! Enjoy and safe travels! That pizza😋😋
Wait till you get to Oregon. You really need to visit the Paulina Lake/East Lake area of the Newberry Caldera. You want to see a LOT of obsidian in one place? Like enough in one place to fill a really big lake. There is also a lava flow that made tree castings as it cooled quickly around old growth trees. The trees have since decomposed leaving natural round well looking casting amongst the lava flow. Oh, and both lakes are great for kayaking around.
Love when you get excited about nature. You love rocks/fossils like I love bugs. See what happens when you don't share your snickers. Pancake, pizza and scones...how do you move?
Travel has deepened my love of tree and rock formations! Thank you!! Hope you make it to Humboldt County in Northern California some day. My home area is spectacular! Mountains, Redwoods, rugged Pacific coast, Six River National Forest,...it's beautiful and has mild weather. Not like Southern California! At all!
Hopefully the little pug owners found him. Unless he met up with the prairie dogs and decided to become nomadic.lol. Another awesome video!!! Rocks amaze me too!Kelly’s cooking NEVER disappoints! Can’t wait for the cook book!!!❤️✨✨✨
What a beautiful place. Very interesting. Never thought of going to New Mexico but may have to change my mind on that. Thanks much for sharing. Oh love the cutting board. Perfect for the camp kitchen. 👩🍳⛺
Great video of wonderful area. I heard the yellowstone caldera was showing slight signs of activity? As always, great cooking by Kellie, good ole cast iron cooking. Guess the altutude showed propane down side, though I dont remember having too much issue with it myears back, when in SW Colorado during elk season. Loved the Hot springs part, maybe , one day I'll get there. Thanks for this trip.
Wow! And I live just below the Valles Caldera and I have never camped up there. What is wrong with me? I need to go to the Visitors center... never been ther either! "You guys" (that's how we say it here instead of y'all) are awesome!
They do have one. Wish I could send you link! 🤷🏻♀️. I also enjoyed their kayak camping one where they showed what they take and how they pack the. Kayaks with all the gear! Enjoy!
Looking forward as to why you guys are moving so fast. I was hoping ya'll were gonna check out the "Chain of Craters" in NM. Amazing volcanic cinder cones. Something to swing back down for later.
I grew up in Redwood Valley, CA (Northern California) and we would sometimes find arrowheads in the ground while playing in our backyard and the surrounding fields. Very common where I grew up. :)
You guys should come to southern Colorado and see the Great Sand Dunes National Park. You'd probably have to make reservations for the campground but it's an awesome campground and the whole area is spectacular.
We camped for free on Lake Como Rd about 15 min south of the dunes. Got to the park by 5:30am, left at 11am and the line to get in was a mile long. Such a wonderful place!
Hi Guys ! really enjoy your video's... We lived in Montana for over 17 years. If you camp in Montana i would camp in the car or the trailer.. there have been a lot of grizzly bear attacks lately, one lady was pulled from her tent and killed by a bear recently... don't like to be negative just cautious..
Love the pizza!! Can’t wait to try it next camping trip!! But Kellie makes it look sooo easy!! Thanks Cody for all the geo-history!! Love it!! I love all the rock formations!!
As I sit here enjoying this vlog I assume you are now in the Buena Vista area. That is a ways north of me so you need not worry about crossing paths this time...lol. But some day if you keep exploring here in Colorado it could happen. Peace and enjoyment to you both.
Nice camping location. I think you need a camping carpet for your cooking area and a long propane line so you don't have to remove the gas tank. Also, a game camera to keep an eye on your stuff while your away. Some come with cellular? Just a few observations you might like. Check out Pergosa springs when you get to Colorado. Cheers

I’m sorry to ask this in such a late notice, but do you guys happen to have directions or coordinates to that site. My son and I are venturing in that area manana. Hopefully with no rain
At one point when Kody was talking about the volcano, I was like...where’s Kody? His shirt blended in so well he could have hidden! Lol. Another great video. Thank you for bringing us along!
I feel a lot has changed about this area since your visit. There is limited access daily to the areas in which you saw. The park only allows a small amount of visitors past a certain point each day. You're not allowed to take obsidian from the park either. We visited this park in June. What an amazingly gorgeous area in New Mexico. Beware of the altitude. In my opinion, with any significant altitude changes, prepare at least 24 hours in advance by drinking lots of water. Be aware of how you feel. Everyone is unique and different and this affects us all differently.
I'm curious how your cast-iron skillet can withstand the acidity of the tomato sauce without stripping your seasoning off. I was under the assumption that cooking acidic things would strip it. Guess it's not always the case?
@@CodyandKellie it might be that you use it so much for other things, that you're constantly applying new layers of seasoning on it, so your little tomato sauce simmer isn't long enough to strip it badly. it's likely that cooking for long hours with acidic foods and letting it sit in the pan for hours is what strips it badly, so your light and quick simmer is probably fine.
