Very smart, down-to-earth suggestions. "Learn words that pertain to your life" makes so much sense. For instance most students learn how to say words like blackboard, chalk, marker, and various animals you might see in the zoo, should you ever go there . . . but not hammer, shovel, spatula, coffee maker, etc. I can carry on a full conversation about almost anything in Spanish, but when I talk about simple things in my daily life, I'm often stymied.
She’s right it really does help to have someone who knows Vietnamese like her husband and his family. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to learn and practice Vietnamese with my boyfriend and my roommates I now call Family and I’m Latina!
I’m really impressed on how you try to take care of your daughter while trying to focus your eyes on the camera to us really shows you’re trying to help us learn Vietnamese. Great video!
I'm glad I'm not the only one that doesn't speak out loud the words I'm australian I live in usa and still have a little bit of a accent so I feel even stupid ER when I don't pronounce the words correctly. Hi Naomi. I’m sorry to hear that instead of helping you your husband tells you not to speak at all. The only way you’re going to get better with practice so I highly encourage you to speak, even if it’s just by yourself in the shower! Don’t let somebody else discourage you from doing something that you would love to do! ❤️
Thank you for sharing your tips!! My boyfriend is Vietnamese, too. And we want our children to learn English and Viet, as well. I was planning on learning children’s songs, too!! Great tips :)
Great advice! Practicing speaking is key, and it's something I put it off for too long in my language learning; speaking, listen, reading, writing are all different skills and a lot of learners tend to focus on comprehension and reading/writing and so they may understand a lot but still not be able to speak at a similar level. Even if you have no one to speak with regularly, as you said making up scenarios and acting through them is a great way to practice forming sentences and speaking. I also narrarate what I'm doing sometimes, like if I'm making coffee I'll say, "I'm making coffee" in my target language and things like that. Saying words and phrases out loud is another great tip you shared, I think I've read that studies have shown saying things out loud helps you remember them more than just thinking them, and as you said it helps your pronunciation and also fear of saying something incorrectly a ton. For sounds that are hard I often look up how the mouth and tongue is positioned in that sound online and practice that way. Also I remember watching a video of the pronuciation of Ngyuen since I wanted to learn how to say your family name correctly, and the UA-camr, his channel name is James Harbeck, said that in English we actually do have the sounds in English, they just don't occur at the beginning of words/a sentence so it's hard for us to say, he said to say the sentence, "A thing we intend to do" because within that sentence is Ngyuen : "A thiNG WE INtend to do" which I thought was pretty cool. Shadowing helps with this as well, watch a Vietnamese show/movie/video and watch a part of the video a few times and after that try to speak along with the actor/vlogger, then when you are comfortable with that then try to say the sentence yourself without using the video as a guide.
This is some good information lol, I gravitate toward learning songs so learning children’s songs is great advice and I like the advice you gave for learning words that pertain/ relate to your life it makes so much sense! Ha ha thanks for making this by the way👍
Such a great little video! I love it!!! I have a Vietnamese wife and a 2 year old, so there's no option for me but to start learning to speak it. Thank you for taking the time to share your wisdom. Cheers ...I mean, một hai ba Dzô
I’m so glad you found this video helpful! I really do get a lot of questions about how I was able to learn Vietnamese because it’s not easy and I wish I had an easy answer but I feel like I’ve used so many different resources and I’ve had experiences that have allowed me to learn quickly. The best thing of course is traveling to Vietnam or being exposed to people who only can speak Vietnamese. It really pushes you to learn and practice and not be afraid to speak. Wishing you good luck on your journey to learn the language! You can totally do it!
Still trying to learn vietnamese and it is coming slowly but it is really a hard language to get so need to practice every day ! And yes I like this kind of videos thank yoooouuuu !
Hi! I'm new to your channel, and this is the first video I've watched of yours. I plan to watch many more. A) Your baby is adorably cute and should get all the subscribes just for her! And B) You have some good advice :D I taught myself Japanese when I was younger by watching music videos, practicing all over the place in my daily life (even at work in the casino and my bosses would tell me to stop speaking Japanese.... until they needed someone to translate for a guest hahaha) and practicing in the shower is a very good tip. Thank you for doing this, and I look forward to seeing many more videos with great content. P.S. I'm wanting to learn Vietnamese now because I am fully retired and have decided that Vietnam (HCMC specifically) is where I wish to live in my retirement (I'm only 40.) While I highly doubt I'll ever be fluent, I'll be happy starting off just having some good everyday phrases so that I do not come across as arrogant. I believe when in a foreign country, you should at least make an effort to speak the native language. Thanks again!
Great video!! I always have a problem with “tr” and “ch” but that’s because my parents speak with a southern accent. When my husband speaks with a northern accent I can tell the difference. 😂😂😂
@@AudreyNguyenVlogs When I have tried to learn a foreign language in the past, I have started with a native speaker of that language and now after watching your video I realise that was a mistake. What I should have done is started with a native English speaker who has learnt the foreign language I want to learn, just like you have learnt Vietnamese as they (you) would be teaching me the foreign language in the context of English, saying things like "In English we say this that or the other, but in XYZ language you don't do that because of ABC, instead you say JKL" and the accent of the native speaker makes it a bit harder. Doing it that way would make it soooooo much easier. Then once I have a good handle on the foreign language and can converse in it pretty fluently, then switch to a native speaker of the foreign language as a teacher to pick up all the nuisances and subtilties of the foreign language that the native English speaker might not know , or does not think is important. You are definitely an inspiration !!! Thank You
Audrey, could you please do a video where you sing more Vietnamese children's songs? I literally only remember 2 other songs from my childhood, besides the duck song! ♥️
