  • Fågelsjö Gammelgård Bortom Åa is one of seven decorated farmhouses of Hälsingland on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Fågelsjö is located in the border between Dalarna, Hälsingland and Härjedalen. The area belongs to the municipality of Ljusdal in Gävleborg County but lies in the Dalarna province.
Bortom Åa - different and exciting experiences for the whole family. Visit Gammelgården and find out what life was like for a wealthy farming family. Step over the threshold of this grand early 19th century farm, where everything has been preserved for several generations. Look around in the old gunsmith’s workshop and examine the farmhands’ lodgings and the grain store with seven locks - you’ll be amazed and surprised. Baking might be in progress in the bakehouse on the day of your visit.
Animals and living history. Maids and farmhands in period costume show visitors around the farm and relate stories from the past. Animals graze in the pastures during the summer months.
Linen and wooden products on sale. In our shop you’ll find genuine handcrafted products, beautiful textiles, ceramics and the Fågelsjö Horse, which is the characteristic symbol of the farm.
Café and study centre. Enjoy a cup of coffee and homemade cakes/buns or sandwiches. The aroma of the morning’s baking lingers! You can hire the bakehouse for your own baking activities. Alternatively you can buy our flatbread - it is baked one day a week during the summer to go on sale to the public. Guided tours Daily all summer. No tours on Midsummer’s Eve.
The farm has been in a single family's possession for seven generations. Each family member has put its mark on it.
Jonas Olsson's daughter Kristina took in 1895 over the farm Bortom Åa. There was a long tradition of building. Kristina looked up to his father and often referred to him when it came to the chores on the farm.
Kristina, only 18 years old, married with Mårten Persson, also born in Fågelsjö. Mårten ran various trade. Kristina continued to live a traditional life as a farmer's wife. She remained the sole owner of the farm, which was unusual for a woman at that time. Mårten was a new-time man. After training for bookkeeper in Stockholm, he returned to the home. The forest industry was on the rise and the forest had had a financial value. The merchant Mårten became a respected man in the village and he was elected in the municipal council and in the school council.
Mårten and Kristina stayed in Gammelgården until 1910, when they moved the new residence on the other side of the yard. The new house was built in a completely new style, and because it was believed that it was built with inspiration from emigrant family members in America, it was called the American House. When they moved, all items, clothing were left in favor of newly purchased items.
The American House was decorated with new furniture and household utensils. All that old was left in Gammelgården where it was preserved for future generations. The couple was childless and at the time of her death in 1943 Kristina gave the farm to the former Loos municipality. The owner today is Ljusdal municipality and the operation is managed by Fågelsjö Hembygdsförening.
Gammelgården is an invaluable source of knowledge of construction, self-catering, crafts and folk art. That the farm is in its original location helps make it very valuable. Some of the buildings date back to the 18th century.
Fågelsjö Gammelgård Beyond Åa is one of the decorated farmhouses in Hälsingland that were listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012. It was then declared as building memorial by the County Administrative Board in Gävleborg since 2004.
Daily guided tours all summer. No tours on Midsummer’s Eve.

Intressant bra film utom musikvolymen för hög iförhållande till berättandet fick höja och sänka hela tiden samt stänga av musiken.

Our family - David & Virginia Hedlund Martin, from Salt Lake City Utah USA visited our Hedlund, and Martensson ancestors homeland in Fagelsjo, in 2002. I am thankful the Gammelgaarden is still there. My parents are living, now in 90's. I am their daughter, Beth Ann Martin Roberts🙂

Hi, I´m happy you found my video. Gammelgården, Bortom Åa, is still "in business" and has a lots of visitors every year. It really is a very interesting place with a very fascinating history.
I have relatives in the US that i hope to get in touch with some day. One of my ancestors, John Grip, founded the small village Hoogdal, outside Seattle in Washington state. Hoogdal was named after Ytterhogdal, his home town in Sweden. washingtonstate.fandom.com/wiki/Hoogdal
