    I would like to add a tip that I just learned. It goes along with searching multiple airports, sometimes more than a few hours away. For example when flying to Asia from Detroit, it may be cheaper to fly round trip to Chicago and then round trip from Chicago to Asia on the same airline. This saved me 1200.00. For close by airports it saved me 600.00 and the first flight was to Detroit and then the same flights I would have had flying from Detroit.

    I’ve noticed most of the complaints for budget airlines are from people who don’t know how they work. If you pack smart and know what you’re getting into, like you said, they’re not that bad. Great tips!

    This was a great video! Well organized, easy to follow, and you in general presented the info well. It should definitely have more views!! My husband is across the country from California to the very east coast of Georgia for the next 3 months for work. We can’t afford multiple trips back and forth but at minimum, I plan to fly to see him and arrive (in Jacksonville, which is where we would stay) on November 3rd (Thursday) have a day to explore the city or just plain relax because I can’t see him until Friday evening he has to be back for work early Monday morning (the 7th) and would fly home that day. Any additional tips for flying domestic with an exact destination in mind? I’m not dead set on Jacksonville. Savannah is about the same distance to his North. From what I can tell though, between now and when he comes home just a few days before Christmas, November 3rd-7th looks to be the cheapest option since he is only able to leave on weekends.

    lol, i do a hybrid of this. Im like man i wanna go to ______ so i search flight from around me to around there and look at the month prices/ date grid then i look for hotels in that time to make sure the savings on the flight isnt outweighed by the cost of my stay.

    Ok, everyone says "be flexible with your travel dates" to get the best air faires, well what if (Like me as a nurse) don't have flexibility and has to request off months in advance for a vacation, are there tips for great air faires for us everyday schleps who can't plan off the cuff? Thanks, I don't mean to be rude, but after watching so many videos with the same advice, I would like some more reality for so many of us that don't have the option/luxery of being so flexible in vacation traveling. I chose you to address this because your seem very personable and relatable. This is my first every comment on you tube. ( sorry you get the question.) I have tried some cheap flight avenues but they are usually for those "flexible" time frames.

      Terrific question, and I get it. I'm happy to address this because I've been there. You're right: At the absolute extreme, the person who can choose to fly on any date at all is at an advantage here. However, that doesn't mean deals don't exist for someone with stricter parameters. Here are a few things to consider. 1. You can still take advantage of and book cheap flight deals well in advance of when the flight happens. A common misconception is that these flights all "leave tomorrow" or "next week". On the contrary. Many of the cheap flight deals I've taken advantage of from services like Scott's Cheap Flights, I booked 3 months, 6 months, and once almost a full year out. So even if you have to request off far in advance, it can be done. 2. In this video, I mentioned a 3 step search approach that many people use (WHEN/WHERE/SEARCH FOR FLIGHTS). For someone in your situation, I suggest choosing your destination last. Let's say you have no control over when you get to take off work. If you know what your dates are, my next step would be to begin searching for flights. Google Explore is great for this. Then, based on where you can go cheapest, plan your trip around that. (WHEN/SEARCH FOR FLIGHTS/WHERE). I used a similar approach recently because we'd like to take advantage of the long labor day weekend. We wanted to visit Portugal, but really, we would be happy anywhere in Europe for this trip. I found a killer deal from the USA to Austria, so, I booked the trip and built an itinerary around Austria. We'll get to Portugal eventually. In this instance, I still had flexibility. But, if I said "It has to be Portugal, and it has to be these dates", then, I basically just have to pay whatever it costs. It's like if you were house hunting to rent or buy. If you decided "I have to move now, and it MUST be on this street", then, if there's only one option, you're essentially saying you're willing to pay whatever the cost is. The person who needs to move now but is flexible on neighborhoods and streets has wiggle room to find a better deal. The person who is flexible on location AND time has the most wiggle room. 3. If you have your heart set on a specific place, and there's no date flexibility, this is where services like Hopper are great because it can also share data with you about prices and whether or not you should book now, or wait for a drop. 3.a. This is also where accumulating points and miles through credit cards can really help. (I understand Credit Cards aren't for everyone, and I'm not advising you to get one). This is my favorite way to book travel. The points price for a flight may still be high just like the cash price, but it still costs me nothing, and money saved is money earned. I hope this helps!

    Hum... Rarely is 'when' you fly negotiable, maybe plus or minus a day, if you don't mind shortening your trip. Generally being flexible doesn't lengthen your trip, unless you are retired and don't work. Most people travel around a holiday, or state day off, or scheduled time off from work. And then they have a place in mind, family or a place they have always wanted to go, etc. Sure you could be open on new things and places every once in a while, after you've been to your dream spots and visited family.
    It's nice that you can travel when ever you want and for how ever long you want, most of us don't have that luxury. Apparently the cost to stay there doesn't play into it either? This seems just for retirees, but you don't seem that old, so wealthy and traveling the world, good for you, but your advise don't help most people traveling.

      I don’t think that’s true - we’re in our 40’s and work year round.
      We’re planning an anniversary trip about 6 months out, and we will take whatever 7-8 day span we can find affordable flights for. We’ll request whatever days off we need then. We will still only use up 5 or six vacation days from work.
      We are not rich, and we’re trying to be as frugal as possible.
      Maybe some jobs are more strict on “when” so then you make your plan around a flexible “where” instead.
      It’s very do-able, even for normal working folks.

    Sorry, but this is all a gimmick. The on line bookers are ahead of the game. Tried a trip to Europe and couldnt find it cheaper than Expedia.

    • @awaytogether
      @awaytogether  Рік тому +1

      I appreciate your feedback, and Expedia certainly finds great deals, but this is certainly not a gimmick. Booking w/ third party sites can have many drawbacks as explained in this video. If your only mission is to find the cheapest flight at all costs, it could be the right choice. But if earning miles, having your airline status recognized, easily cancelling/changing your flight outside the 24 hour window, or customer service are important to you, it’s better to book direct with the airline. And many of the tips I shared in this video will help you do that cheaply. As always, your mileage may vary. I hope you have a great trip!
