- Avengers #1 Ep. 8.
In this video I complete the conservation of this Avengers #1 comic book, the first appearance of the Avengers from the Silver Age, by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and review all of the before and after results.
This project included the initial comic book dry clean, disassembly, photobleaching with deacidification, sealing the tears using Japanese Tengujo paper and wheat paste, staple conservation, reassembly, and final press. In this final Episode i demonstrate my pressing protocol for this book and then review the final results with plenty of before and after slides!
These techniques should result in a CGC Conserved label and in my experience when executed properly do not trigger purple or restored label from CGC.

I can’t believe some of these before/after images. You truly are skilled. Interesting to see the ink not adhering to the pages and to see you reassess your plan.
Great work on this key book, Dr. Paul. Congrats on getting the tanning and tidemarks improved. The ink bleed on the inside cover is all gone. And tears repair with tengu tissue gives the book such great finish.
What incredible results! The book looks like new! Awesome work done on it.
Very nicely completed Dr. Paul! Looks great.
Nice job on that grail Dr. Paul.👍
congrats on a job well done , Dr. Paul . the book is sooo much better after all of your efforts . i'm sure the owner is going to be thrilled with what you have done for his book . thanks for the amazing vids on this job !
GROOVY!!
Wish I had that beauty. Great work as always.
Looks good!
Absolutely great work. Meticulous.
Great job, some pain staking work. But the results are well worth the results. I can't wait to see what's your next project. Thank you for sharing the step-by-step videos. And the final results side by side before and after pictures.
Thanks Hugo!
Great video I’m glad I found your channel!
Cool
Thanks!
What grade do you think it would have received if you had not worked on the book? What grade do you think it will receive now? The book you worked on turned out great. With the tear seals do you think it will get a conserved grade?
I have an Average #1 with a date stamp on the front and a store stamp on the back. I’m afraid to do any wet cleaning on the cover because of the stamps. It has a very minor tear on the cover. The tear is about 1/16” long. What length of tear would you seal? Will correcting the tear with the Japanese paper get it a conserved grade?
Thank you for your response. I enjoy watching the work you do. I think its great to see old gold and silver age comic being saved for later generations. These old books didn’t get much respect for a very long time but finally people are seeing the social history they contain. I just hope big business doesn’t destroy the comic book out of greed.
